THURSDAY EVENING, JANUARY 8, 1981 FORT WORTH STAR- TELEGRAM Editorials Letters 15A After record year in 1980, fire chief wants changes By TOM ANDERSON Star-Telegram Writer Fort Worth firefighters has their busiest year ever in 1980, answering 14,748 calls, but Fire Chief Larry McMillen would like to see the department's efforts nearly triple in 1981. McMillen, who took over raschief in May after serving as a deputy in Phoenix, doesn't want Fort Worth to have more fires: He just wants the 600-man department to deliver more service instead of sitting around the station waiting for a fire. The more than $12 million in fire losses the city experienced is also a record. Fire losses on 1979 totaled $11.5 million and the 1978 figure was $6.06 million. But under an ambitious program McMillen has developed, Fort Worth firefighters would be spending little time around the fire hall, execpt to eat and sleep.
