two knockdown punches last Sunday On a day when the Dallas Cowboys ricocheted off the turf to register perhaps their most thrilling victory ever they surrendered a pair of ghastly long-distance touchdowns FIrst Benny Malone scampered 55 yards with a circle pass to produce a 17-0 Redskin lead in the second quarter Then John Rigging burst 66 yards on a sweep that gave Washington a seemingly insurmountable 34-21 edge in the fourth periThe Cowboys survived because Roger Staubach and the two-minute offense were equal to the task delivering a heart-thumping 35-34 triumph But the defensive lapses were clearly a sign of the times The big play has been a sea Dan Fouts: From ballboy to Namath record breaker SAN DIEGO (AP) Growing up Diego its first title in 14 years the in Sleepy Hollow a suburb outside Chargers receive the home-field San Francisco Dan Fouts got to act advantage throughout the playoffs out every youngster's fantasy 'Me seven-year veteran from Or-As son of the 49ers' play-by-play egon finished his incredible regular broadcaster his Sundays were season with 4082 yards bettering spent at Kezar Stadium as a 9-year- the record Namath set in 1967 old ballboy for the NFL team Fouts did it by completing 332 of 530 One of his early idols was 49ers' passes for 24 touchdowns Namath quarterback John Brodie who was 258 of 491 with 26 touchdowns passed for more than 31000 yards and 28 interceptions in 17 NFL seasons Fouts had a 16-game schedule Almost 20 years later Fouts has while Namath the New York Jets' fulfilled another fantasy star achieved it in 14 games At age 28 he has broken Joe "we feel our passing game is unNalnath's single season passing to- stoppable" said Fouts who betal of 4007 yards the NFL's all- can the first player in the NFL's time mark and put the Chargers 00-year history to throw for 300 in position for a run at the Super yards in four straight games Bowl Fouts led the NFL in completion A national television audience average with a 626 percentage sliitched Fouts establish the record and edged Oakland's Ken Stabler in a critical 17-7 victory over Den- as the AFC's top-rated passer For San Francisco Dan Fouts got to act out every youngster's fantasy As son of the 49ers' play-by-play broadcaster his Sundays were spent at Kezar Stadium as a 9-yearold ballboy for the NFL team One of his early idols was 49ers' quarterback John Brodie who passed for more than 31000 yards in 17 NFL seasons Almost 20 years later Fouts has fulfilled another fantasy At age 28 he has broken Joe Naniath's single season passing total of 4007 yards the NFL's all-time mark and put the Chargers in position for a run at the Super Bowl A national television audience sliitched Fouts esiablish the record in a critical 17-7 victory over Denver Monday night With the victory which gave San son-long nemesis for the vaunted Flex defense AND ON THAT subject Landry spent a good portion of Tuesday's press conference addressing himself "We have had more big plays (scored) on US" he said "We'll have to play better against the big plays Ulan we did this game We didn't play ioo badly in certain areas but when you let two big plays get away from you like that it's pretty Lough to offset" Malone eluded linebacker DD Lewis at the point of 'the catch and then simply outran the Dallas pursuit Riggins broke a draw trap thal he turned outside after he crossed the line of scrimmage Linebacker Mike Hegman missed an early tackle to give the Redskin fullback running room "Our pursuit angles weren't quite as good as they could've been" Landry said diplomatically of Riggins' run "We un Turn to As Kid Page 2 ALL STORES 45 djrestimated Higgins' speed (Dennis) Thurman was coming across and could've had an easy angle on him but misjudged how fast he was moving Then Cliff (Harris) missed a tackle" THE CHANGING FACE of the Dallas defense is the primary reason the Cosvboys have given up uncharacteristic single-game point totals of 34 30 34 and 31 this year Just as telling is the number of big-play touchdowns they've yielded In 16 games they've allowed eight TD passes of 32 yards or more and five TD runs of 37 yards or more The longest scoring pass against Dallas was a lot yarder thrown by Chicago's Vince 3vans The longest scoring run was a yard jatmt by St Louis' Ottis Andersot defense is completely different than it was last year" Landry In short when John Cohn is 26 years old we should have the same sports but they may be operating on tighter budgets or else One other question my friend John perhaps will answer himself for he and his young friends: "Who will be the superstars of the 1980s?" Obviously some'of the 1979 stars will still be "super" six or even 10 years from now But the Earl Campbell of 1989 is probably in the ninth grade- toda'y Tomorrow's Julius Ening is on a playground someplace learning to dorkThe World Series heroof 1988 may he in a Colt League this spring And that's the best reason to answer questions from teenagers They ARE tomorrow's superstars bless 'cm future as a major American sport Mass popularity? Not yet There is also interest in gymnastics in run ning in a variety of endeavors that was not there in 1969 me answer with another question: What does it tell us if indeed we have seen a splintering of sports interest rather than any sport coming to the fore to seriously challenge the old standbys? John Cohn asks another question which may be related to that one: "What do you think will be the changes in sports during the 1980s?" There's no positive answer but -then predictions are apart of this job LI: from time to time I thinkwe will see expansion of the participant interest in healthful 'lifetime" sports such as tennis and Jogging One of the beau ties of jogging is that its hard to see how anyone is going to "turn it pro" and make a bunch of bucks from it flow do you franchise jogging? The established spectator: sports may face a the rest of the scary fuel and economic situations One OPEC leader predicts $10 a gallon gasoline by 1990 Stretch that a little and you can agine it costing a week's transportation tickets (which will rise in price) a man and his family to go from fort Worth to a Cowboy game in Irving Mass transit is the answer (there were crowded 1 1 Pat Truly tt1 Button-down Oxford Shirts How about soccer? Which brings me to John Cohn a bright young man who is a junior in high school and is resolved to do a sports story for the Paschal Pantherette Young Cohn has laid some questions on me and while dubious about contributing to the sports writing delinquency of a minor I'm giv ing him answers to be delivered by a mutual friend Some of his questions deserve comment here for they are the broad ambitious posers that you have to be young to ask and experienced if not conceited to answer For instance he asks "Which I sports have gained mass popularity during the 1970s?" I don't believe any sport has GAINED mass popularity during this decade Professional football has added to its already immense popularity Baseball has at least held its own College football and basketball have maintained their death grip on a large segment of the public Soccer has made enormous strides in this country but more with the kiddie set than with the spectating ticket-buying hero-creating public at large The jury is still out on its 1 Undeniably classic pleasers that never go out of style!
