gain the regional flavor" he noted "She is the No 1 folkloric choreographer" "Rodeo" reminds Spohr of the vastness of the plains of his youth as the women at the ranch gaze across the grass looking for the cowhands to come in It is the story of an awkward and tomboyish ranch girl who wants to compete with the cowboys on their own terms much to their irritation Irritation changes to something else as she suddenly blooms into something other than a cowgirl at a Saturday night dance "De Mille incorporated some shouts into the ballet which are meaningless to me (and were to her) except that she did hear them Perhaps someone in Fort Worth will identify them" Spohr opined but I think without much hope Some of them sounded like Indian words to my ear Spohr pointed out that as he tries to guide his dancers into their characters he also wants to them to keep their personalities "You MUST not take away a dancer's personality and gifts but show them how to highlight them in the context of the character they are dancing" he maintains The Winnipeg Royal Ballet is a small company numbering about 25 dancers The associate artistic director is David Moroni The principal dancers are Evelyn Hart Bonnie Wyckoff Michael Bjericies and Joost Pelt Soloists are Kathleen Duffy Margaret Slota Susan Bennett Patti Cap le tte David Peregrine and David Herriott Kerry Duse is orchestral conductor for
