Arts Writer from the collection of the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford in England Included are works by Cana Piranesi Tiepolo Gainsborough Reynolds Turner Boucher Chardin Watteau and others Then looking at paintings you can put yourself in the mind of the artist and see how he goes about realizing the artistic intent he's trying to accomplish" says Kimbell curator Ruth Sullivan "In a painting which can be layer on layer of media the artist has the opportunity to work it over his original steps have been obscured as he goes along They all get covered up "A drawing is the artist's handwriting" She suggested that when studying drawings viewers should "look for the differences in media Try to figure out what came first "It's fun to figure out where the artist started how he developed his theme what direction he was moving in" The curator pointed to Antonio Joli's -Interior of a Church With Figures" as an example The artist's preliminary perspective lines remain visible so -you can see what came first The lines on the floor" can be seen through the ladies' dresses and some lines stretch like strings across the church's arches Turn to Drawings on Page 6 0 I you' re interested in understanding how an artist's mind works studying his drawings is a useful way to go about it Visitors to the Kimbell Art Museum will have ample opportunity to study artistic intent beginning Saturday when "Eighteenth Century Master Drawings From the Ashmolean" opens for viewing through March 2 The exhibition consists of more than 80 drawings and child Ballet DlLi Canadian to refresh his memory of the Royal Danish Ballet's choreog- raphy from an 8mm film print Splicing of breaks had gnawed away at small bits of the work Spohr learned that Fort Worth's Wil ham Martin-Viscount was to be in Denmark so Spohr had him check out his memory of the work and nailed every thing into place Martin-Viscount was a student with Spohr and a principal dancer with the Canadian company at one time "Fort Worth is very fortunate to have said the tall (6 feet 4) Scohr "Ile gained great habits from our company and has had his own successes since leaving He has great connections with top-ranking personalities" Spohr believes in variety for his company classical contemporary jazz He has traveled widely looking into formal dance and folk dance in all areas of the world The Fort Worth program reflects some of this together with the feeling that a program should be tailored to an audience In addition to the "Napoli" excerpt there will be "Adagietto" a love duet choreographed by Oscar Ariaz to the fourth movement of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No 5 What was conceived as abstract music (in Wagnerian times) becomes "a story that could only be told through dance" according to the program notes Eyes spoke to me in such poetry only once before when KRLD's Ales Burton described the first spring flowers peeking up through the last of the snow on the plains of his rrative Canada This though was Arnold Spahr another native of the Canadian plains describing the vast sweep of the grain prairies of his boyhood Spohr credits his success to two things: that closeness to the earth and growing up in a home with a Lutheran minister father What Spohr does so successfully is ballet "Growing up in the country keeps one attuned to the simple things of life: the land the grass the sky I have an affinity to land space earth very Canadian in spirit and flavor these have a truth that is me "That is why I check up on facts and believe in rehearsing very hard My dancers must team more than steps and rmvements they must know who their character is and tell a story Dance is theater" Spohr is artistic director for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet The company is performing in Fort Worth on Jan la under the auspices of the Fort Worth Ballet Association What he means by attention to detail is demonstrated by his visit to Fort Worth weeks before the one-night appearance Arnold Spohr be performed by the Winnipeg Royal Ballet MESNIESIZEINIUMEP' NM MititIMINE WM BEM IIMINOMKgal ViWiatMffZMI The best albums singles and concerts of 1979 By ROGER KAYE Mat-Telegram Kock Billboard's Top 10 for the year had nothing to do with the Star-Telegram rankings They were all based on personal preference For that reason several unfamiliar names made it into the rankings some at rather lofty positions like Shoes and Bram Tchaikovsky Those two bands are still largely unknown but their albums were deemed good enough to earn the second and third spots behind Foreigner with their respective LPs "Present Tense" and "Strange Man Changed Man" "Tomorrow Night" the lead-off cut on the Shoes' album would have earned a spot high in the Top 20 singles had it been released as a 45 However the first single from the LP was "Too Late" which gets the lath slot Even though Tom Petty and the I leartbreakers already had two great albums to their credit they still weren't that well known until they released No 3 "Damn the Torpedoes" last year That album which features a scorching cut titled "Refugee' has carried Petty's I leartbreakers into the national Top 10 It's good enough to finish No 4 in the S-T rankings and the album's first single "Don't Do Me Like That" also took No 4 behind the Babys "Voices" by Cheap Trick and "head Games" by Foreigner The Police's "Roxanne" placed fifth among singles Following Petty in the album rankings are the Babys' "head Games" at No 5 Bad Company's "Desolation Angels" in sixth place Gambler's "Teenage Magic" seventh Ian Hunter's "You're Never Alone With a Schizophrenic" eighth inger's "Airwaves" ninth and the Cars' "Candy0" lOth Perhaps most noteworthy among the second 10 Turn to Rock's on Page 10 IForeigner the Babys and the Beach Boys have earned top honors in the Star-Telegram rock 'n' roll rankings for 1979 "Head Games" by Foreigner is the choice as Album of the Year the Babys' "Every Time I Think Of You" is Single of the Year and the Beach Boys' performance at the Dallas Convention Center on Oct 1 is the Concert of the Year it Just like a lotOf commercially successful bands who have mastered the art of making hit singles Foreigner has come in for more than its share of critical abuse the last few years Most of it has been unjustified though because this six-man band hasn't made a bad album yet But they tcipped themselves with "Head Games" their third LI' It's a deluxe package of torrid rock 'n' roll land there isn't a weak cut to be found "Dirty White Boy" "Rev on the Red Line" "Do What You Like" 'I'll Get Even With You" "Seventeen" and the title cut are especially outstanding but all 10 cuts are good It's a collection of melodic hard-rock songs by a multi-platinum band that consists of lead guitarist Mick Jones guitarist-keyboardist Ian McDonald keyboardist Al Greenwood drummer Dennis Elliott bass guitarist Rick Wills and one of the most underrated lead singers around in Lou Gramm who wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on "Head Games" Speaking of underrated artists the Babys certainly would qualify in that category Their last two albums have been excellent but they're still battling to make the jump from opening act to headliner status They first made their mark on the music scene BEST The Babys' I Think of You' BEST The Beach Boys Oct 1 Dallas BEST 'Head Games' Foreigner songs and 90 minutes of intense rock that included Spirit's best-known songs from the past such as "1 Got a Line on You" "Natures Way" and "1984" The third-best concert was the Metroplex debut of the Cars at UTA's Texas Ilan June 22 when they gave a sellout crowd of 3000 a 16-tune 75-minute performance that included seven songs from their then just-released "Candy-0" album That album placed No 10 for the year and the LP's first single "Let's Go" Finished No 8 making the Cars only one of three acts to eam a spot in all three "best" rankings of 1979 Peter Frampton (14th in albums 10th singles Ilth concerts) and Journey 13th in albums 15th singles 15th conceits) also gained berths on all three lists and company There were 26 tunes in all and they spanned the length of the Beach Boys' career from "Little Deuce Coupe" and "Surfer Girl" to "Good Timin' and "Lady Lynda" They led off with "California Girls" finished with "Fun Fun Fun" and there was never a dull moment in between A close runnerup in the conceit category was Spirit's May 11 show at Will Rogers Auditorium Unfortunately only about 500 showed up to watch the classic band of the late '60s and early '70s prove that its still just as good as it ever was Led by Randy California one of rock's best guitarists who learned his trade under Jimi lienditx the power trio blasted its ay through 15 with the hit single "Isn't It Time" a couple of years ago and they followed that up with "Every Time I Think of You" a similar but nevertheless outstanding song with a hook that just won't quit It was good enough to finish on top in a year that saw the release of more good singles than in re cent years And the British group has just released another killer 45 "Back on My Feet Again" which should contend for for best single of 1980 The Beach Boys also rebounded with a top sin gle in '79 "Good Timn'" which finished No 6 in the rankings But the California group's Dallas concert was No I as a crowd of 8000 saw 90 non- stop minutes of hits pumped out by Brian Wilson 00.
