Privately during breaks the actors and production workers admit they are angry and sad that -Love of Life" is over Its awful" says Larry Auerbach who has directed the show since its first broadcast in 1951 -I put it on the air I'm taking it off Its like waiting for your father to die and you know he's dying Friday The king is dead and I'll say tong live the king But its hard to go to the funeral" Not only did Auerbach direct the shows first episodes but he guided it through many wrenching transitions particularly in recent years IN 1976 "LOVE OF LIFE" held a 71 percent rating in the Nielsen survey of soap operas at that time an average rating But in an effort to inject more excitement into the series the shows producers brought in new writers and new characters It didn't help The ratings fell to 6 percent by Febru ary 1979 and in April CBS assigned -Love of Life" a new time slot pm The show had been broadcast during most of its 28 years at 11:30 am Because of the time switch in most parts of the nation the show's audience dropped dramatically In addition more than 40 of the 180 CBS-affiliated stations that aired the show dropped it When CBS put us on at 4 pm it killed us says Ms Abbi who was hired in 1978 to help revive the show "The affiliates dropped us like flies All they cared about was a time slot that would make them money -I've been in acting a long time and I'm used to closings" says Tudi Wiggins who has played Meg Dale Hart since 1974 "'Love of Life to me is a lady and she's going away at 28 and that's very sad No matter what's been done to her she's been loved What is wonderful is she's leaving as a lady" Between scenes of a trial Ms Wiggins sits in the courtroom set area and bromes through scripts for upcoming plays "Today I auditioned for 'Who's Afraid of Virginia I'm an actor I go where the work is" Beyond the courtroom set where Ms Wiggins sits Studio 41 seems strangely empty The 100-foot-long set of the McCauley mansion has been dismantled and packed away The "mansion" complete with a staircase and a full living room cost $250000 to construct Last year it won an Emmy award for design excellence for daytime soap operas By MICHAEL KELLY But we'll never know the ending "Love of Life" the 28-year-old afternoon soap opera that chronicles the lives of Meg Ben Betsy Ray Arlene and 18 other fictitious characters of the equally fictitious town of Rosehill is dead CBS canceled the 30-minute daily television program in February "Love of Life" premiered in September 1951 three weeks after -Search for Tomorrow" America's longest-running daytime soap opera At one time or another the "Love of Life" cast included Warren Beatty Peter Falk Marsha Mason Roy Scheider Bert Con)' Christopher Reeve James Earl Jones Cicely Tyson Beatrice Straight and Jessica Walter couldn't build up the rating" says Jeane Renick director of daytime programming for CBS "I think it got to the end of the viewers' interest" The show's ending however remained open-ended No conclusions Just non-conclusions CBS didn't allow enough time says the show's producer Cathy Abbi to adequately wrap up the characters' story lines Instead of a surprise ending or a slow fade-out over the previous week's episodes the cast decided to act like business was normal and on-going Ben was still in trouble with the law Liane still couldn't decide between marriage or a career Bruce still didn't know that Amy is his daughter ON THE FINAL DAY of taping in Studio 41 the scenes evolve slowly into their final forms It takes almost eight hours to tape a 30-minute spisode But that day the filming snags on an unexpected problem Several actors have called in sick Several others on the set are nursing coughs It's like the ending of any show" says one substitute actor Everybody's getting sick" Sickness in fact was one of the only -tinoWlat SUIMINIALITINzillrellitIRLPOOLvilionin Whirlpool SILIFLATIOVIS 1 I 1 ---i1 Model EV163F 159 Cu ft frozen food storage capacity Textured Steel door helps hide fingerprints and scratches Durable porcelain-on-steel interior Power-saving Heater Control Switch helps save you money Automatic interior lighting Power-interruption light warns of power failure Key-eject lock helps protect food supply AS LOW AS $26995 MANY SIZES Chest Md EEH061 FW ilpnv polio 7 SAVE THIS COUPON di 90gsietroval 80 Will Rogers Exhibits Bldg MARCH 1415161980 I1 OVER601XIIIBITORS WRIST' NURSEllyMEN a' GARD ERS EXHIBITS FEATURINCIVADENS-iCPATIOS LM URE AB SHOW MORE IDA SA URA 118 SUNDA 6 -) SUIroallIALITY41111rellitillt1100011111 SAVE THIS COUPON i Whirlpool 110 1 ILIFLAATERS 4 IOLIS 0 de SBET i II fn 9c1Testival 80 -1 Will Rogers Exhibits Bldg lrr---p illpitl 159 Cu ft frozen food storage Model EV163F 1 itE- '---r---- MARCH 1415161980 1 11 1 ol 11 I capacity II Textured Steel door helps hide 4 111 tlIl I fingerprints andscratches OVER 0 '6'1" 'sL ir41 Vi Cli 11 BIWR 1 110 111 Durable porcelain-on-steel 1 interior r121110111 ti LORISTINURSERAIEtttGARD SUPP ERS 11 1 11A -------i Fs' owwi ec th- shaevi ipesgs Ha veea tyeor Lel rottnr4 Ilp il I Automatic interior lighting 11I-111111114 I Power-interruption light warns I EXHIBIISFEATUNNCVG PIDENS-iePATIOS LM CLEO UBE AB SHOW ND MORE IDA -SA URDA I SUNDA 5 rr HIS AD 50c i of power failure EG1ADMISSION l' 1 1 Key-eject lock helps protect RICE 1:8 0:8 gi food supply lk 3 vorsiflimo ----------z' lila AS LOW AS $26995 Ilk tr-------- MANY SIZES Chest Md ED-10610N 7 0 111001011 viik 4 7 I 4 oh 44 1--4A a i Karla '711: R02LYEARS IV litl A 1A 01 dim I st 0 i Isle nUMNIu 9234307 Or AVIII div es fw op AB 10 ao a Alp 4(: ili 111aw4 4 1 Silt -11 1 is If A i Or 111111 RD Alb 61p flt 0 a 0 0L svtpSp 4 e'lli 4 okoo i'01 7 14 teI 01 sics1 oartne (s--a00 l' to P- ''sc --1 I tv today rzl llom Houston' Astrodome-Watch professional cowboy and cowgirl world champions and challengers battle for national PRCA points and rankings as they comlk sti pete in the famous Houston Livestock 1 4 'C4Itsb' AP------2 Show Rodeo 1110M HOUStOnIS Watch professional co world champions and battle for na i and ranki 4k peteointl li '1 A 6:30 pm PM MAGAZINE (8) Ride the Delta Queen down the Mississippi (Part I and talk with the women of the US Marine Corps 7 pm THE WHITE SHADOW (1) Coach Reeves is the man of the hour when Carver plays its way into the city championship basketball finals but his joy is short-lived when tragedy strikes the team 7 pm HOUSTON RODEO () Action from the annual Houston Rodeo 7 pm HAPPY DAYS (8) Potsie is offered an audition to sing at the plushest night spot in Milwaukee and his swelled head causes problems for everyone 8 pm TV MOVIE: 'The Plutonium Incident" (4) The story of a powerful plutonium processing plants drive for prof its at the expense of human safety Janet Margolin Bo Hopkins and Joe Campanella star 8 pm ME BIG SHOW (5 Comedy-variety series with Marie Osmond and Gavin MacLeod as hosts 4gOor Bronc riding I Bull riding Roping Steer wrestling Barrel racing Get as close to the action as I the cowboys do!
