Chuck Gallagher and Mitch Leigh have never met, but the feisty Jesuit and the Broadway composer are partners in a matrimonial goodwill mission that circles the globe.

The odd connection came about because Gallagher found, more or less by chance, just what he needed in music. As far as theatrical record-keepers know, never before been such a link between spiritual uplift and show biz. Gallagher heads Marriage Encounters, a Catholic project with interdenominational affiliates. He conducts his office with easygoing amiability. His fyll name is the Rev.

Then comes in which is shown what happens when a person is lovingly of God controversial By David E. Anderson UPI Religion Writer Westminster Press, the publishing arm of the United Presbyterian Church and never one to shrink from controversy, has done it again. The people who brought you the to debate and the debate now have raised for American Christians the question of whether Christianity needs to affirm Jesus as God as a necessary element of what it means to be Christian.

The issue is raised in a provocative new book being published by Westminster. "The Myth of God edited by well-known theologian John Hick. It is a collection of 10 essays by seven theologians which, when first published in Great Britain earlier this year, created a storm of controvers- ty which has yet to subside. Now Westminister has made the book available here so that American theologians, and more importantly the average church-attender, can get in on the debate. The general position of the book, in somewhat simplistic terms, is rather straightforward: Jesus never claimed divinity for himself, that the identification of Jesus as the of the triune' God is a post-New Testament identification and that it is not necessary to recognize Jesus as divine in order to be believing Christian.

At the same time, most of the authors, while denying the deity of Christ, stress his uniqueness and his role in bringing the believer into relationship with God. More conservative theologians contend that if Jesus is not divine as well as truly human, then he could not be savior and humankind would be eternally separated from God because of its sins. At least some of the counter that salvation is activity, not although it is made known to humanity through suffering and death.
