wheelchair basketball team takes the court the ensuing action is a demonstration of abilities disabilities The team will be taking the home court at 7:30 pm Nov 15 at Texas Hall for its homecoming game The battle will be with UT-Austin's wheelchair basketball team which has the best record in the conference 'If we win Arlington and Austin vill be tied for the championship" said Jim Hayes coach and player for the UTA team Hayes also director of UTA's program for the handlcapped is planning for a win by UTA's Freewheelers as the team is called That's the way he operates The homecoming game is a fund-raising project for the UTA team year we were able to award nine $250 scholarships to handicapped students We hope to be able to repeat that this year" said Hayes Tickets to the game are only $1 arid are on sale at the university information desk and in Hayes' office Tickets will also be on sale at the door the night of the game "We really want to fill the hall which has 3600 seats to show the team that the university and community is backing them" said Hayes Hayes said wheelchair basketball has developed into a topnotch athletic event "Ws not recreation a club sport or some Mickey Mouse activity Our guys work hard often rolling 15 miles a week to keep in shape" said Hayes Several of the UTA past wheelchair basketball team members have been picked by the Dallas Raiders a pro team "That's left us with a bunch of rookies this year they're getting better" said Hayes He was hoping he could have devoted all his time to coaching this year instead of playing as well But we didn't quite have the manpower The rule in the wheelchair basketball conference is that one staff member can play on the team" he said Ilayes sees the wheelchair basketball and other sports for handicapped persons as one way of improving confidence of students "Accomplishment on the basketball floor has given the team members an independent spirit They have discovered they can do anything they want to both on the basketball court and in life" said Hayes "These guys will never give up and let mom and dad take care of them or welfare either And they have helped turn other students around and instill the same spirit in them" he said UTA won the wheelchair basketball conference in 1977 and was cochamp with Houston in 1978 "We blew Austin away last year But this year is a different story UT-Austin has the players and it may be their year Still we're going to give them everything we've got the night of the 15th "It's in our favor that we have the home court advantage and the crowd
