Sports Writor For the true racing fans there was no mistaking the face For the doubters there it was on his windbreaker "Bobby Unser" The Sports Car Club of America s4" kicked off its season of national point events Sunday at Greater Southwest Airport One of the famed racing broth- 1 11k lp) -4 ers was taking a busman's holiday i Unser was working the pits of business Ns' kt partner Rick Galles Albuquerque ---ir Chevrolet dealer Together they own a 04 to dealership in Phoenix Very seldom" smiled Unser asked 21 if he had many occasions to go to the BOBBY track as a pit boss and plain old racing UNSER fan In fact most extremely rare" UNSER AND GALLES have a race shop in Albuquerque "where you can do just about everything you can to a race car" When he isn't working and racing Unser said he likes to prepare engines as a hobby There'a also a professional standoff with Galles "I don't get to spend a lot of time with the dealership so I let Rick take care of business and I trade off" Unser kelps prepare Galles' cars for the some 17-odd SCCA and road races each season The two-time Indy and national championship winner Will again step into the cockpit in two weeks when the Indianapolis racing machines take to the track in Phoenix for the season opener But this is no ordinary opener Car owners including all the top teams except AJ Foyt will be running under the aura of Championship Auto Racing Teams which represents a split with the United States Auto Club "I think CART is justified" said Unser swinging the conversation around to his sport "It's a constructive cause or to put it bluntly it's a darn good thing it happened" saa For the true rac face For the doub "Bobby Unser" ks404 -e A 'itto 41120' BOBBY UNSER shop in Albuquel everything you ct ing and racing Ur a Racing Tea United States A "I think CART conversation arc cause or to put happened" UNSER SAID the whole feud with USAC over such things as rules "has been brewing for quite a few years Instead of just getting better it just got worse They USAC) would just makes jokes out of it And they would give us a lot of excuses" Despite the split Unser Rutherford and all the other top names plan to race at Indianapolis in May But Umer blasted the newly passed rule allowing stock block engines "They made it where absolutely junk cars can run To stay in business (keep some control over the sport) USAC just dug its own grave" Unser contends Championship racing Unser said "is 100 per cent show business We have to put on a show for the fans" And that can't be done with poor quality machines and rules like the fuel limitations Unser said He thinks CART is the answer "I've spent 29 years in the business and when I go I'd like to see racing as a better sport" And with that the checkered flag fell and Unser made his way to the Greater Southwest Airport terminal to watch the amateurs It was their day on stage temative was to set up a new governing body The first CART race is March 11 in Phoenix USAC has announced a championship car schedule and their first race is March 25 There's a possibility Rutherford said Sunday that a real showdovm could come March 25 "Because of flooding in the Phoenix area some of the roads leading to the track have been washed out" said Rutherford "More than likely we'll race on the lith but any more rains could push the date up two weeks to March 25 and we'll have a definite showdown" THE ONLY MINOR setback in recent weeks has been the defection of Houston's AJ Foyt one of the founders stro Pd c) -G zl Check Your Yellow Pages For Your Local Tarrant County
