SUNDAY OCTOBFR 21 1979 FORT WORTH STAR TFIFGRAM 8 NTSU's ball control offense stymies West Texas State about it one official waved me on and another one flagged me 1 don't understand That was a key play 27 yards on penalties and a 46-yard return" Indeed it was Case made it hurt with key completions of 11 yards to Jackson and 16 to Witte and scored it himself on a quarterback sneak from the one Smith's PAT tied it with 8:53 left in the third period Wesf Texas 0 7 7 0-14 North Texas 7 0 14 7-7 NI 75 run (SeU tnferk) WI 16 pass from thoMpSon (Theriot kork 25 bit oked punt return (Theriot k(k) from 16 yards out with 12:47 to play in the first half Case lost a fumble to West Texas' Perry Allred at the Buffalo 35 on the Eagles' next possession but the Buffaloes bogged down and Press Theriot was short on a 52-yard field goal attempt despite the wind at his back With 4:41 to play in the half the Green hooked up from their own 20 and trudged the length of the field on a drive that appeared sure to regain the lead Case had completions of 9 13 and 7 yards in the drive and Jackson contributed a 15-yard run to set up a first and goal at the West Texas five On the next play Case was plugged as he tried an option pitch tossed it poorly and Freddie Whitley re covered for the Buffaloes at the 14 "That was'a good play on the part of their left defensive end Mike Nelson" Vi 11011 Ole Eagles won the toss The Eagles cranked up a long scoring drive on their second possession after West Texas punted and Steve Dieb made a fair catch at the Mean Green 17 Nine plays later the Eagles had taken a 7-0 lead Jackson carried four times for 25 yards Case scrambled for three and passed to Mark Witte for 17 and to Dieb for 13 setting up a first down at the West Texas 25 Then Case fed it to his fullback English who hadn't touched the ball all day The Buffaloes were so concerned with containing Jackson and Case they'd forgotten all about him Ile pulled out of one arm tackle and rambled in for the score Whit Smith kicked the extra point and with 3:03 left in the first quarter the Mean Green led West Texas however marched right back trooping 80 yards in a time-consuming 16-play drive that carried into the second period Thompson the junior quarterback from Austin helped himself said Moore "And we probably had Jordan over-coached on that play It was supposed to be a speed option play but he kept it a hair too long 11 he'd pitched it a split second sooner the Ti) was there easy We had the right call but Jordan carried his fake just a bit long" 6 Later on the speed option play or a derivative thereof would pay off anyway Thompson Mayberry blocked a Billy Ortiz punt had a 10-man line and we just weren't quick enough" Moore said i and Sonen gathered it in and raced 25yards to put West Texas ahead early in the third quarter But the Buffaloes were penalized 15 yards for a dead ball clip and another 13 hen WT coach Bill Yung questioned the official on the play and West Texas had to kick off from its own 12 Jackson returned it 46 yards to the 33 and the Eagles were on the march "I thought they had called a late hit said Yung "and when I questioned them By JIM StarTelegram Sports triter DENTON The wind that whipped intoFouts Field from the south here Sat urday afternoon was hot dry and unpredictable a late-season Santa Anna capable of wrecking the best laid 'game plan But on an Indian Summer afternoon that was about 95 percent summer )90 degrees) and 5 percent Indian North Texas State refused to let the 30-mile an hour breeze destroy its passjng game Quarterback Jordan Case displaying pinpoint accuracy despite the gale picked West Texas State apart with a nearspectacular afternoon and tailback Bernard Jackson rushed for 122 yards as the Mean Green mauled the Buffaloes 28- 14 in front of 13700 I lomecorning fans "I told our kids before the game that there was only one way the wind could hurt us- said North Texas coach Jerry Moore "and that would be our kicking game "We didn't think it would hurt us offensively We run a controlled type passing game with a lot of short and intermediate routes "But with the wind the way it was today- Moore added "it was to your advantage to run the ball and try to control The Mean Green did control the ball well scoring on its opening possesion after an 83-yard drive and bouncing back from a 14-7 deficit early in the third guar West Texas took the lead by return: ing a blocked punt for a touchdown vvith scoring drives of 33 73 and 51 yards Turnovers bothered the Mean Green like a severecase of poison ivy for much of the game the Eagles lost three film bles including one at the Buffalo five but even worse said Moore were 70 yards in penalties "The turnovers didn't bother us as much as the penalties" said the first-year North Texas mentor whose team squared its record at 44 "We kept putting ourselves in a bind with penalties It seemed like we were constantly looking at first-and15 secondand-25 There's only so many of those that you can overcome" But overall Moore was pleased "I was proud of our offense" said Moore" I thought we made one key mistake and that was the fumble we had at midfield in the fourth quarter after we'd gone ahead 28-14 That could have let them back in the ball game Basically I thought we had control of the football game on offense but I never got that ing on defense" Case was tough for the Biiffs to control The Seagoville senior completed 16 of 20 passes for 173 yards and ran for another 47 Jackson whose 122 yards came on 25 carries seemed forever on the verge on breaking a long one Oddly enough the Dallas junior didn't score during the afternoon The honors for the Mean Green belonged to Lee English on a 25 yard run Case on a one-yard carry I42-pound Bruce Chambers on a four-yard run and Malcolm Jones on a two-yard dash West Texas' Larry Thompson threw a 16-yard pass to Iticky Collingsworth for the Buffs' first score and Adolfo Sonen raced 25 yards with a blocked punt early in the third quarter The wind was enough of a factor that Moore had the Mean Green kick with it PUSH tNG Jackson 25-127 Enghsh 8-41 Cd5P1447 Jones638 WT Compton II-7104k 1053 Case position Facing a second-and-six situation from the Aggie 34 Dewalt handed to his 5-10 175-pound right halfback and Felder raced to the end zone for the score Ilappel converted the kick again and UTA held a 28-14 advantage after three quarters Dewalt called his own number for the next UTA touchdown running the option play perfectly around right end for a 30-yard score That run put Dewalt over the 100-yard mark which was even more impressive considering the 29-yard loss he took on the controversial fumble in the second quarter ilappel nailed the kick through the uprights again to make it 35-14 Anthony Price wrapped up the UTA offensive onslaught with a I2-yard TD run late in the game and converted the extra point again for the final score While Dewalt Co were destroying the NNISU defense one potato chip You try but you just can't do it Dewalt the talented quarterback for the University of Texas at Arlington rolled up 179 yards total offense and guided the Mavericks to 28 second half points and a 42-14 romp over the New Mexico State Aggies The victory spoiled homecoming festivities for 22385 NMSU loyalists Engineering the Mavs wishbone offense that ground out 462 yards Dewalt ran for 115 yards and passed for another 64 as UTA moved its 1979 record to 4-2 Mile Dewalt's statistics were impressive the 6-2 208-pound senior quarterback actually didn't establish himself as the games hero until the second half Misplayed pitches and sloppy overall play by both kicking teams hindered the early going and for the first 30 minutes it looked like neither team wanted to win The Mays struck early recovering an Aggie fumble sm the NMSU six yard line three minutes into the contest I tailback John Johnson dashed around right end from the one for the touchdown and with Brian Ilappe conversion it was 7-0 UTA Eleven minutes later the first of several bizarre plays got the Aggies back in the game NMSU punter Marc Brandt hit a 51-yarder that sailed to the Mavericks Don DeLeo at his own 10 But DeLeo misjudged the kicked and dropped the ball into Aggie Jim Ilemphill's hands From there State took three plays to punch it in with the score coming on a six-yard sweep by Terry Haynes around right end Scott Richardson hit the point-after to tie it up NMSU returned the fumble favor in the second quarter when Aggie returner Scott Luhman dropped an Odes Mitchell punt at his own I I The ball rolled into the end zone and Gary Bailey pounced on it for a Maverick score Ilappel again kicked true to give UTA a 14-7 lead and the Mays appeared to be taking control Another strange play however one a call by the officials helped the Aggies to tie the game before halftime LTA was on its own 35 and Dewalt dropped back to pass As he stepped to throw he was blindsided by Brian Carrie and the ball squirted backwards to the UTA six The play was ruled a tumble even though it appeared Devealts arm was moving forward The Mays recovered but they eventually had to punt and NMSU took over with good field position The Aggies capitalized on the break driving 61 yards in nine plays and scoring on a one-yard dive by I laynes Itichardson's l'AT tied it at 14-14 at intermission Dewalt and the Mays finally gained the upper hand in the third quarter On their first possession Dewalt sparked a 58-yard seven-play march with a 19-yard run on first down Then a 15-yard jaunt by Kent Sharp and
