to one of Russell Erdeben's two field goals Rice's offense geared to the throwing of Randy Hertel and Mark Snyder was well contained particularly by the Texas ends Ron Bones and Tim Campbell Campbell had a bravura performance with a fumble recovery an interception return for a toirhdown and the scalps of both Rice quarterbacks Rice finished with a 36-yard deficit rushing and Campbell was directly responsible for 15 of them The Owls' offense generated a net of only 85 yards Thus Texas' 13th consectgive victory over Rice looked easy And it was at least for most of the first half Then either from disinterest or from opening-night tension things became rather sloppy for the Longhorns They lost five of six fumbles and accumulated 165 yards in penalties The referees gained almost twice as much against them as did the Rice offense in bringing the axe down on the necks of the smaller slower Rice line On the third play of the Texas season quarterback Randy McEachern lofted a high pass down the right side and Lam Jones simply ran past cornerback Don Rutledge and under the ball at the Rice 17 He was long gone for the end zone and the 57-yard play put Texas in command at 7-0 Two possessions later it was 17-0 Five plays after Lam Jones' streak King darted through left guard wriggled into the clear and ran 47 steps to the Rice end zone The Longhorns were on the march again later in the first but stalled at the Rice nine In came Erxleben for a 26- yard field goal He hit his 46-yard three-pointer in the second period against a 12-mph wind and uith 11:52 left in the first half Texas had a 20-0 lead and it looked as if it might be 200-0 before the long night was over Lam Jones next beat Mike Downs at the end zone corner for a 33-yard touchdown catch and the Horns were ahead 27- 0 at intermission By GALYN WILIUNS StarTelegram Sports Writer with cement boots by a quick and overpowering Texas defense the Rice Owls went literally night The Texas offense which you've all been dying to hear about went somewhere some of the time The defending SWC champions with their former star Earl Campbell merely another spectator (although he had a good seat on the Texas bench) exploded in a brief series of brit flashes in the first half and with the defense completely in charge and went on to score a 34-0 victory THE ORANGE FAITHFUL in fact may have an inkling they found another Earl Campbell early in the game when LeRoy King a transfer from Blinn Junior College sprinted 46 yards to a touchdown on Texas' second possession That sent him on his way to a 106-yard night a flying start for the 215-pounder Johnny Lam Jones was a familiar blur beginning his junior season by turning passes into touchdown plays of 57 and 32 RICE HAVE taken some 13-12 shots or some defense shots during the intermission for the Owls returned in an aggressive mood and took the fight to the up front where they had been so decisively whipped in the first 30 minutes In the secondary for example Downs who had been beaten by Jones came back and intercepted a pass in front of his tormentor midway through the third quarter Texas had begun substituting liberally especially in the backfield late in the first half and continued the heavy traffic from the bench in the second half Mark relieved McEachem in the second period and threw the second TD pass to Jones Freshman Donnie Little played much of the fourth period with freshman running back Brad Beck and AJ Jones Texas had 312 yards in the first half and slowed to 154 yards in the second when they scored only on Campbell's point-blank touchdown guy a break in Georgia and he's liable to wind up as president Taking the cue the Georgia Bulldogs converted a rash of Baylor mistakes on a hot and humid Saturday afternoon to survive 16-14 in a football opener for both teams in the land where everyone talks like Jimmy Carter The Bulldogs squeezed everything they could out of two Bear fumbles and a roughing the kicker penalty and used the toe of sophomore Rex Robinson for three field goals that spelled the difference Robinson who managed only 10 of 20 attempts last year in the Bulldog' first losing season under coach Vince Dooley in 14 years authoritatively kicked field goals of 43 38 and 36 yards while Baylor's sophomore kicker Robert Bledsoe misfired from 38 and 34 to help bury the Bears STILL THE Southwest Conference Bears didn't die easily before a regional television audience and an estimated 43000 fans at Sanford Stadium After the Southeastern Conference Bulldogs had shot ahead 16-7 with 8:31 to play in the game on a I6-yard touchdown sprint by speedster Willie McClendon the Bears quickly moved down the field on the passing of junior college transfer Steve Smith and scored in a little over three minutes when Smith lobbed a pass over the head of defender Robert Hope into the arms of Nlike Fisher for a -yard touchdown There was 4:10 showing on the clock and Georgia was forced to punt after three plays netted only one yard After the punt Baylor took over on its own 43 and the Bear faithful knew coach Grant Teaff would inspire his troops to pull it out That's when Baylor's touted running back Greg Hawthorne did something that mined his otherwise outstanding day He rammed into the line on third and five at the 48 and fumbled to the eager hands of Georgia's Pat Collins Up until then Hawthorne had been a barrel of trouble for the Bulldogs and had racked up 127 yards rushing including a two-yard touchdown the second quarter which had put Baylor ahead 7-3 "I WAS HIT on the thighs and the ball just slipped out" said a tearful Hawthorne after the game He felt as if he had betrayed the Bears However so did Bledsoe who said that kicking off the real grass instead of artificial turf bothers him "But I'm not using that as a crutch" he said "I don't know why I wasn't kicking any better but I do know that it meant the game" Bledsoe explained that his kicking foot would scrape the grass but again refused to use that as an excuse Quarterback Smith also felt he helped cut his team's throat in the fourth quarter when he fumbled a map and allowed Georgia to cover at the Bear 41 From there the Bulldogs scored in only four plays when McClendon raced over for his 16-yard touchdown "The difference is their field goals and our two missed field goals" said Teaff Turn to Baylor on Page 2 Bayior 0 1 0 1-14 TEXAS did not play Texas rips UTA By KEN SINS Stu-Telegram Spirt Writer would the seeingest of seers know of the talent which was resting on the North Texas State bench in 1977 One was a reserve flanker a slender freshman vto said his name was Bernard Jackson He wasn't to catch a pass through that well-rested season Seated somewhere near Jackson was a well-built sophomore quarterback from the where's-that? city of Seagoville Jordon Case would complete all eight of his 1977 passes but both were hardly household names of the John Travolta-Reggie Jackson stripe Shoot they weren't even candidates for anonymity As Richard Nixon once noted what a difference a year makes Jackson and Case were a two-man arson squad Saturday night providing the fuel for another Mean Green offensive bonfire which smoked out UT-Arlington 23-23 NOT THAT the underdog Mavericks allowed cardiac patients among the 16821 Texas Stadium onlookers a night of peace UTA was staring at a 28-10 deficit with about five minutes remaining before striking fora pair of lightning 'Ms to make matters entertaining Only Marty Morrison's second interception of a Roy Dewalt pass with 1:08 remaining in the contest sealed the Mean Green's fourth straight triumph over its heated neighborhood rival But the late fireworks only slightly tarnished Jackson's and Case's heroics Jackson who entered the game as the NCAA's third-leading rusher owned the school rushing record with 44 seconds remaining in the third quarter His 208 yards stood one better than Ray Renfro's previous mark established in 1951 but he lost two yards on the last play of the game to finish with a tie And Case? He ended his night's work with 14 completions in 19 attempts good for 199 yards and a touchdown in addition to a one-yard scoring plunge in the first half A goodly number of UTA partisans had headed homeward when the Mays got their act together Quarterback Roy Desalt got the near-miss UTA comeback underway with 5:48 remaining Dewalt's second completion of the evening to halfback Phillip Jessie and a NT clipping penalty set the Mays in business at the NT 40 DL'IVALT CLICKED with Jessie for a 21-yard completion and Bill Mcaesky covered the final 17 yards on three carries Tom Skoruppa attempted an onside kick and recovered at the UTA 46 after NT's Jim Lemming had touched the ball Dewalt picked up six more points in a hurry finding tight end Jerry Woodard beyond the Mean Green secondary for a shocking 54-yard touchdown Dewalt's passing attempt for the two-pointer was broken up by David Morris NT punter Buddy Hamm booted the Mean Green out of danger with 1:42 left a 38-yard
