Ridglea's 'Alien' Screen in Review You can have "Star Wars "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "2001 I'll take "Alien" Which is not to diminish any of the aforementioned sci-fi trio all of which were pu ked here as top films of their respective years and still remain milestone favorites Rather it is to say that "Alien" is a remarkable and superb film that is just as sureK one of this year's top pictures and one tliat fascinated and held me more than the other three The difference is that "Alien" will scare the hell out you as well as giving you an intriguing experience in the field of seeing masterful movies PUBLIC REACTION WOULD bear that out In just the first four play dates the Ridglea Theater has seen the biggest crowds in its 29-year history Bigger grosses than "The Godfather" "Love Story" "The Poseidon Adventure" II" "Superman" and ironically "Close Encounters There is a chance that the grotesque shocks of "Alien" which won't be revealed here will gross you out more than the box office will gross It is strong strong stuff Be forewarned In director Ridley Scott'sbrilliantouterspace outing the time is lar into the future Seven earthlings aboard a space ship prowl the heavens on their way back home from an ore-gathenng mission on another planet A celestial freighter it you will "Mother" a computer system not unlike "HAL" in "21X11" directs them to land on an obscure planet to investigate a mysterious signal emnating from there In a scene of shocking horror could hardly be described with mere words even if one wanted to (which I don t) the alien organism of the title attaches itself to a crew member and hence is brought along as an unwanted stowaway for the trip baik to earth The eerie search to find thg that is growing and hiding in dark recesses of the vast space craft makes "Alien" a film of unbearable suspense tension and chilling intensity A SUPERB CAST of little-known actors handles the task with low-keyed professionalism They are Tom Skerritt as the pilot Sigourney Weaver as the in-command second-in-command Ian Holm as the on-board scientist John Hurt and Veronica Cartwright as hapless crew members and Harry Dean Stanton and Yaphet Kotto as malcontent engine room people "Alien" is a film of many visual shocks But two "biggies" stand out as candidates for recurring bad dreams They will probably go down as horror movie milestones to be talked about for as long as movies are made For that matter the entire film will probably fall into that category Right now we II just settle for a four-star rating The Ridglea has
