season Saturday night with a 48-17 victory over outmanned Van derbilt and unveiled a sizzling new quarterback in the process If the 55718 fans a stadium record crowd came expecting fireworks they were not disappointed But the names of some of the skyrockets may have surprised them Senior field general Ron Calcagni for instance was outshined by transfer Keven Scanlon who passed for two TDs and ran for another And amid the veterans like Ben Cowins and Jerry Eckwood were new stars like Thomas Brown who had a 96-yard kickoff return Still it was the reliable Arkasas defense which was the key Only during the track meet of a third period was Vanderbilt able to dent the scoreboard And at the end it was a freshman-dominated bunch of Arkansas reserves who got a field goal and a touchdown for the final 10 points The Hogs' first score resulted from a chain of events that included I a flruce Lahay punt killed at the Vanderbilt 3 (2) a Vanderbilt fumble which Arkansas grabbed at the Commodore 6 and (3) a goal-line stand by the Commodores which stopped Arkansas at the 6-inch line a a a VANDY HAI) TO PUNT and Arkansas set up shop at the Commodore 43 In came Scanlon and the No 2 offensive unit snatching first downs at the 31 and then the 16 There was a temporary set back when Vanderbilt's John Pointer caused a wild pitchout back to the 30 But on third down from there Scanlon hit Bobby Duckworth crossing at the 10 and Duckworth spun away from two defenders to go in for the score standing up Leading 7-0 Arkansas came right back on its next possession to go 58 yards for another ID Eckwood got 9 yards and Cowins burst loose over left tackle breaking three tackles to reach the Vandy 7 A motion penalty put the ball back at the 12 but Eckwood ran to the 8 and then Calcagni rolled around right end for the score and a 14-0 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half Moments later another Arkansas up by an interference was thwarted when Ronnie NITick picked off a wild Ca Icagrii pass at the Vandy 1-yard line But Tandy could not budge the Razorback defense and the Hogs regained possession when Mike Massey recovered a Commodore fumble at the Vanderbilt 32 In two 30-yard pass to Robert Farrell and a 2-yard ID run Scanlon had raised the margin to 21-0 where it remained at the half Then came the wild and wooly third period It started with an Arkansas drive which resulted in Ordonez's 46-yard field goal and a comfortable 24-0 lead Then Heflin Vandy's 6-foot-3-inch 290- pound soph quarterback powered the Commodores 70 yards in six plays including a 39-yard keeper to the Hog 16 and a 13-yard run for the touchdown THAT MADE IT 24-7 and moments later Arkansas had to punt Bruce Lahay boomed one 54 yards beyond the coverage to 93 sprinter Preston Brown at the Vanderbilt 10 Brown got some room on his left broke into the open at midfield and went 90 yards Suddenly it was only 24-1 1 The fired-up Commodores weren't through Pointer tipped another pitchout this one by Calcagni and recovered it at the Arkansas 22 It led to a 33-yard field goal by Mike Woodard and a 24-17 score But not for long Thomas Brown Razorback freshman from Montgomery Ala caught the ensuing kickoff at his 4 and took it upheld lie came through a swarm of players at his 30 and outran the last pursuit for a 96-yard ID runback Arkansas was back in comma nd 31-17 Early in the fourth period Cowins got the Hogs moving again with a 32-yard run to the Vandy 16 A penalty set them back but Scanlon again was johnny-on-thespot He pegged to Farrell who caught the ball at the 5 and was slowed down at the 2 but strained over the double stripe The 21-yard pass made it 38-17 JULIO MARINER WINS DONCASTER England RP) Julio Mariner a 23-1 outsider ridden by Eddie Hide won the $120000 St Leger a season opening 34-0 victory over shell-shocked Rice Saturday night The Texas offense operating for the first time in four years without graduated Ileisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell did not appear any less awesome scoring two touchdowns on its first five offensive plays Jones a member of the United States' gold medal-winning sprint relay team at the 1976 Olympics raced down the sideline under a pass by quarterback Randy McEachem on the third play of the game for a 57-yard pass run touchdown play Halfback LeRoy King popped 47 yards through the middle of Rice's line for a touchdown on the second play of Texas' next possession Erxleben who holds the NCAA record for the longest field goal at 67 yards then took over with his 26-yard and 46-yard kicks and Jones caught his 33-yard pass from backup quarterback Mark McBath to stake the Longhorns to a 27-0 halftime lead Although the game became sloppy in the third quarter with four turnovers including three by the Longhorns Texas' defense added another touchdown with 13:56 to play After Erxleben had punted out of bounds at the Rice one defensive end Tim Campbell intercepted a pass by Mark Snyder and returned it 1 yard for a touchdown Rice which lost for the 12th consecutive game fell to 0-2 this season losing to 19th-ranked Iowa State last week Rice spurred by a 72-15 loss to Texas last year in its worst defeat in history had hoped for a stronger showing against the defending Southwest Conference champions But the Longhorns never gave the Owls a chance scoring points on five of their eight first half posessions King finished as the game's leading rusher with 106 yards on 10 carries while freshman quarterback Donnie Little got 68 yards on five carries in an impressive fourth quarter performance First game miscues kept the score from being even higher The Longhorns had six turnovers including five fumbles and one interception After only two rushing attempts McEachem dropped back and quickly lobbed a pass to Jones who had completely outdistanced the Rice secondary Texas went ahead 14-0 moments later following an exchange of fumbles that left the Horns with a first down at Rice's 47 "Lam" Jones fumbled and Rice's John Stroman recovered but on Rice's first play Bo Broeren fumbled and Texas' Glenn Blackwood gave it back to the Horns King split through the middle of the Rice defense on the second play for his touchdown Rice which moved the ball successfully a week ago against Iowa State did not reach midfield against Texas until the final minute of the first half The Owls got to the Texas 37 but defensive end Tim Campbell sacked Snyder Nice for losses of five and 11 yards as the first half ended Snyder replaced starting Owl quarterback Randy Hertel to direct the drive and played the second "There were very little differences in the two teams" he said "The only difference is we had only one turnover" Baylor's Benny Goodwin accounted for that turnover when he picked off a Buck Belue's pass in the third quarter to set up the Bears at the Georgia 44 while still holding their 7-6 halftime lead Instead of padding the margin however the drive ended in zeroesas Bledsoe's 34- yard attempt sailed wide of his target Robinson who had put Georgia on the board first in the third quarter lAith a 43- yarder then capped a Pultdog drive by nailing his third three-pointer from 36 yards just two minutes deep into the fourth quarter The drive was kept alive at Georgia's 34 when Baylor's Andrew Melontree was flagged for roughing punter Mike Garrett Baylor and Georgia battled on virtual KC passes 2 million KANSAS CITY Mo (AP) The Kansas City Royals passed the 2 million mark in attendance at Friday night's victory over California becoming the fifth American league franchise ever to hit that mark A crowd of 30847 Friday night pushed the season attendance to 2000231 with 10 home games left on the Royals schedule Royals general manager Joe Burke said he expected attendance to hit 22 million before the season ends noting that the accomplishment is more remarkable because Kansas City is the smallest of 26 major league baseball markets The Boston Red Sox were the only other American League team to hit 2 million so far this season with the New York Yankees expecting to surpass that mark Saturday National League teams to reach 2 million this year are Cincinnati Los Angeles and Philadelphia Bulldogs By CHARLES CLINES Star-Telegram Spoils Writer ATHENS Ga Give a guy a break in Georgia and he's liable to wind up as president Taking the cue the Georgia Bulldogs converted a rash of Baylor mistakes on a hot and humid Saturday afternoon to survive 16-14 in a football opener for both teams in the land where everyone talks like Jimmy Carter The Bulldogs squeezed everything they could out of two Bear fumbles and a roughing the kicker penalty and used the toe of sophomore Rex Robinson for three field goals that spelled the difference Robinson who managed only 10 of 20 attempts last year in the Bulldog' first losing season under coach Vince Dooley in 14 years authoritively kicked field goals of 43 38 and 36 yards while Baylor's sophomore kicker Robert Bledsoe misfired from 38 and 34 to help bury the Bears STILL THE Southwest Conference Bears didn't die easily before a regional television audience and an estimated 43000 fans at Sanford Stadium After the Southeastern Conference Bulldogs had shot ahead 16-7 with 8:31 to play in the game on a 16-yard touchdown sprint by speedster Willie McClendon the Bears quickly moved down the field on the passing of junior college transfer Steve Smith and scored in a little over three minutes when Smith lobbed a pass over the head of defender Robert Hope into the arms of Mike Fisher for a 29-yard touchdown There was 4:10 showing on the clock and Georgia was forced to punt after three plays netted only one yard After the punt Baylor took over on its own 43 and the Bear faithful knew coach Grant Teaff would inspire his troops to pull it out That's when Baylor's touted running back Greg Hawthorne did something that ruined his otherwise outstanding day He rammed into the line on third and five at the 48 and fumbled to the eager hands of Georgia's Pat Collins Up until then Hawthorne had been a barrel of trouble for the Bulldogs and had racked up 127 yards rushing including a two-yard touchdown the second quarter which had put Baylor ahead 7-3 "I WAS lin on the thighs and the ball just slipped out" said a tearful Hawthorne after the game He felt as if he had betrayed the Bears However so did Bledsoe who said that kicking off the real grass instead of artificial turf bothers him "But I'm not using that as a crutch" he said "I don't know why I wasn't kicking any better but I do know that it meant the game" Bledsoe explained that his kicking foot would scrape the grass but again refused to use that as an excuse Quarterback Smith also felt he helped cut his team's throat in the fourth quarter when he fumbled a snap and allowed Georgia to cover at the Bear 41 From there the Bulldogs scored in only four plays when McClendon raced over for his 16-yard touchdown "The difference is their field
