MELDKrM RnUier ol HIS LITTLE HATCHET. Senator Kennedy Is Prepared for Retrenchment in State Affairs. State Senator A. R. Kennedy came down from Cripple Creek yesterday and is spending a few days in the city on business.

The Senator does not expect to go to Denver for his coming work in the legislature until after the holidays. The senator in his outspoken way talked pretty freely on coming legislation. He is out this time for retrenchment and reform, and don't care who knows it. He says that it is abont time for the legislatures to quit trying to see how they can beat the constitution and increase the tax levies, and go to cutting down excuses. He figures out that in the neighborhood of can be saved the state in useless expenses.

the senator said, would start in on that cnpitol commission. It ought to have been abolished two years ago, and there is no doubt about it Ben Crowell resigned last wiuter because he felt that the work was done and he had no business drawing salaiy. About $12,000 can be saved in that next. Senator, would you pnt the instrument that canght the chicken in the in on some of the salaries paid those little teachers in those lit tie schools we are maintaining all over the state. Take the schools at Ft Collins and Greeley for instance where the instructors are getting $5,000 a year.

Two thousand off of that would bo big money for them anywhere else in the state, and it is enough, too. considering the condition of other things in the country. We can save a good many dollars by a few judicious The senator is not from Missouri, but he says they have got to show him where that state labor commission is doing any good. They get out a voluminous report full of calamity every year, but how anybody is benefited by any suggestions or any good works he has not yet had explained to him. He is open for conviction, however, on that.

Continuing the senator said, take the state game and fish department. It takes a pile of money, and I see that it is any good as now run. It would be many times cheaper for the governor or some state official to send away and buy a quantity of young fish and have them dumped in the streams than to keep up the expensive hatcheries. It is a lot of buncombe to have a game warden with an office in Denver and the game about 300 miles away. It would be more sensible to abolish such an office and hire a man or two to remain over in the western counties and watch the game and NUMBER 26.

streams. With a little authority a man or two with common sense could do more to protect game than 500 deputies lounging around the 6tate house. This ay stem could almost be made to maintain itself if the wardens were permited to capture the pelts from those breaking the laws and sell them for the benefit of the further, I like to jump on the little fellows, but around the state house there can be the biggest kind of a cut. There are said to be about forty clerks in the office of secretary of state. If it is true there is an excellent place to cut.

Three or four people can do the business there and I know it About every official and every deputy official at the capitol building is said to have a typewriter at a good salary. The typewriters should be sufficient to do the work in a neat and modern manner, but not crowded for the purpose of making patronage. Yes, I think the coming session will be pretty Horse Creek Happenings. V. W.

Reynolds is at work at Holly this week. W. E. Vincent was a visitor on the creek last week. W.

A. Leonard is progressing nicely with the Middwater school. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Brown have a fine girl at their honse.

All are doing well. John Gordon has been at work with a number of teams strengthening a few weak places in the Amity near here. So much water is being wasted from the canals in the east part of the county that travel west of Coolidge is badly impeded. Itemizes. The water consumers under the La Juuta and Lamar canal are hereby notified that the water will be turned out of the canal for the winter upon December the 10th and earlier than that date if the weather is so cold as to make it necessary.
