Christian University and the One Hundred and Forty-first Infantry teams will give local fans a good line for comparison on soldier and college football Many critics have argued that the soldiers are able to put out the best teams for the reason that most of the college stars are now in the army Others have argued that the superior coaching of college teams and the old fighting spirit makes up for the lack of individual stars who have left the ranks of the collegians to help Uncle Sam In his fight for democracy There is no question about the ability of either of Saturday's contestants in their respective classes Whether either has stepped out of its class or not in arranging the approaching conflict remains to be seen Milton Daniel has developed one of the speediest little teams out at that the Christians have had in years and he has done it out of absolutely green material Soldiers Are strong In taking on the One Hundred and Forty-first Infantry team formerly the Second Texas Infantry the Christians are matching their skill against one of the strongest soldier elevens in the Southwest if not the trongest If Daniel can send his men through to a victory over the Doughboys or even hoid them to a close score it will be a big feather in his cap The Christians will go into the game at a weight disadvantage Neither team will be able to marshal its strongest forces because of cripples but both coaches will be able to put a representative team on the field To prepare for the game and to get in good condition to meet a picked team from Camp MacArthur at the Cotton Palace rext week the "Second Texas" has engaged the services of Joe Utay former Texas A star and well known official as coach Utay took charge of the team Thursday and put it through a stiff workout After practice Utay' announced that "Spitz" Clark and loe Edens will probably be kept out of Saturday's game to save them for the Waco engagement Both are suffering minor ailments Hampered hy Cripples TT News Service NEW YORK Nov 9 All will not be harmonious in the ranks of baseball whfti the minor leagues pet together in Louisville next week The formation of the third league to be named the Union has caused a wave of discontent to sweep through the contemplated program Club owners who will not be included in the third major league are sowing the seeds of discord The Kansas City St Paul Milwaukee and Minneapolis clubs of the American Association are the ones who will be left out in the cold The National Commission ban been appealed to present the dissolution of the two leagues into a third major Hit-key president of the American Association is practically leading the fiuht against the pl-m Ilickey's fight came after the report was sent out that Ed Barrow president of the International league to he chosen as head of the new league Mickey had visions of lieing the lender of the new circuit Hickey's argument is that the Toledo Columbus Louisville and Indianapolis clubs In his circuit cannot withdraw from the league without unanimous consent of the club owners He contends that if these clubs are permitted to Join the TTnion League the structure of organized baseball will crumble Whether the National Commission will interfere is problematical The heads of the two majors are inclined to favor a new league They figure it will be a good thing for the game will keep up an interest in the sport during the war and also prove a financial success But the commission will undoubtedly adopt a "hands off" policy in settling the dispute They will not interfere according to all reports because of technicalities The commission's jurisdiction is confined to disputes between major and minor leagues The third league has not yet been formed It is not yet a major cin-uit Thus the commission will be in its rights in refusing to heed Hickey's plea SAGINAW KID DOES GREATEST COMEBACK If the club owners fail In their effartf a hold bouts in New York state after th Bating of the Hundred and Thirty-third Field Artillery elevens have their first meeting of the present football campaign Both teams have their hats in the ring as contenders for the championship toga of Camp Bowie elevens At any rate the game will solve the disputed supremacy of artillery teams at the camp Both teams are on edge for a gruelling struggle Since their Inst appearance on i the field the One Hundred and Thirty-second 1 has secured the services of Lieut Robert Hanger as quarterback and coach Hanger has injected lots of pep and fight into the I team and It is expected to show even more spirit than it did upon its last public ap- I pearance when It defeated the One Hundred and Forty-third Infantry eleven 27 to 0 Poor generalship at quarterback lost the initial game of the season for the One Hun- dred and Thirty-second when a game was dropped to he engineers No such fate is expected with Hanger acting as the guiding spirit of the team The One Hundred and Thirty-third will I present the same dashing attack which gave it an easy victory over Bill Murray's artillery band two weeks ago In Purnell Coach Coleman has one of the best forward passers uncovered in local soldier football i circles has won another battle by the knockout route and this vic-tcry has brought him greater happiness than did any conquest in the padded ring George Lavigne "The Saginaw Kid" is the man The once great lightweight who has been living in Detroit for several years and who has been in the courts on more than one occasion has pulled himself together and "come back" A few months ago it was decided to send Lavigne to an asylum His condition it was stated in court was the result of alcoholism He was taken in custody after he was alleged to have beaten his wife Lavigne was given another chance He promised to "go straight" The research department of a big automobile factory became interested in the case and furnished employment Lavigne became a bench worker Recently a report was made public of Layigne's progress Among other things it is said he "had made good at his work" Lavigne also seems satisfied And besides he is able to punch the clock twice a day HOWARD PAYNE PLAYS METHODISTS SATURDAY BROWXWOOD Texas Nov 9 The Howard Payne football team will be In Dallas Saturday for a game with Southern Methodist University The last game played by Howard Pavne was a victory of 49 to 13 over Austin college Howard Payne will play against Rice Institute at Houston Nov 17 A new gridiron for soldier football games will be christened Sunday afternoon when the One Hundred and Thirty-first Artillery and One Hundred and Forty-fourth Infantry teams meet at Fair ParkL As an added attraction of the christening two strong polo teams from Camp Bowie will open the day's festivities with a stirring match A number of Fort Worth's young business men have taken over the Fair Park lease and in the future that plant will be turned over to soldier athletic activities A football and a polo field have been laid off on the infield of the race track and many other improvements an- planned for the near future contending teams at Sunday's opening pppear to be evenly matched and each has strong backing from their respective regiments Doth regiments expect to make a big day of it Each regiment will have its band on hand to help in the noise making and the rooters will be there In attendance The unexpected strong showing of the One Hundred and Thirty-first against the famous Second Texas last Saturday has boosted the stock of that team considerably That one game has done more to re-establish the confidence of Coach Murray's men than anything else could and they believe before the session is much further advanced they will be as good as any eleven in the brigade The polo game will also attract many people to the park The teams represented will be the One Hundred and Thirty-first Field- Artillery and a picked team of all-stars from the other regiments at Camp Howie All the participants will be officers many of whom have gained much fame through their daring horsemanship To reach Fair Park take Camp Bowie cars to the Chevrolet plant and walk one block north The polo game will begin at 2:30 o'clock and the football game at 3:30 Up With the point the advance guard commander is fighting it out Presently the waiting support will receive a a dive into the a quick run
