INCREASE Each Renewal Means More Money for Men in Circuit BY FRANK MENKE -NEW YORK Feb' A comparison of the form of contract used by the Federal League and the one used by or ganized baseball ehows that the Fed- eral contract ue-! fepite the fact mat contains sort- i thing akin to the1 much-abused re-1 serve clause is far the fairer to the player of the two The organized entrant as regards the reserve clause is peculiarly word- I worded in suce' 1 ay as to enmesh a player and place hi entire future at the mercy of the magnate It makes the player the property of the magnate for as long a time as the magnate desires and in no way does it assure the player that if his contract is renewed will he get an increase in salary nor does it even assure him his salat won't be cut The rederal league contract binds a player to his club at the expiration oi the contract but hinds him only conditionally Tn case he is not notified by Sept 15 that the club will want his services the succeeding season he ceases to be the property of the club and Is at liberty to contract with anyone he chooses Feds Guarantee increase In addition to thi- the Federal League contract guarantees a player a salary increase of at least 5 per cent every lime his contract is renewed and the club owner binds himself to pay the player his regular season's salary for every day he remains on the re-Berve list The organized baseball contract Bays: Clause 1 The club agrees to pay the player for the season of beginning on or about the day of end ending on or about the day cf 191 a salary at the rate of for such season: and an additional sum at the rate of for sunh reason SAID ADDITIONAL SUM BEIN'? IN CONSIDERATION OF THE OPTION HEREIN RESERVED TO THE FLUB CLAUSES 10 HEREOF' SUD ADDITIONAL SUM TO BE PAID WHETHER SAID OPTION IS EXERCISED OR NOT MAKING THE TOTAL COMPENSATION TO THE PLAYER FOR THE SEASON HEREIN CONTRACTED FOR Clause 10 The player will at the option of the club enter into a contract for fhe succeeding season upon all the terms and conditions of this contract save to clauses 1 and 10 and the salary to he paid the player in the event if such renewal shall be the same as (he total compensation provided for tn clause 1 hereof unless it be increased or decreased by mutual consent" If a lab feels that a player's services are worth Sl'iuo a jear it agree in writing to pay him $4000 It words clause i in such a way that it gives the player about saooo for his services and $1000 extra as a bonus for agreeing to bind himself to the flub through the reserve clause Clause Ten Unfair The wording of Clause 10 looks innocent and fair and yet it isn't The last part of it states that if the contract is rt newel it shall be for the same compensation provided for clause 1 it he in-rcasrd or tie-denser by mutual consent One gathers the idea from that last line that if a club owner wants to cut ft man's salary when time comes to sign a new contract the cut cannot be unless the playc-r agrees Ani -body ever hear of a club owner wno didn't fix the salaries of his players irrespective of tbir wishe-? things of interest to the baseball world President Johnson talked at length on the recent meeting of the National and American leagues in New York City He declared the two leagues were working in harmony and that while they- had a big proposition to meet (meaning the Federal League) they would do so honestly and squarely The American League leader did not mind discussing the Evers case In part he said: "Evers felt that he had been tricked when he signed his contract with Murphy He thought he hail been signed as manager for a term of five years but' when be summoned his lawyer from Troy- he discovered that a had been placed in the contract It was there all the time but Evers did not know It At least what I was advised by Barney Dreyfuss ana other National League officials Believe in It certainlv believe in dealing with ball players in any such manner In our league we have to trick managers or players and I think the gentlemen of the National League will stand for it either was sent all around the country- signing ball play-ers that Murphy probably could not have signed He was sent South to make the final training camp preparations To release him as manager only four or five days prior to the departure of the club for the training quarters seemed absolutely cruel and unjust I certainly wouldn't stand for any such tactics in the American League informed Governor Tener and other National League officials while I was in New York that our organization continue on present terms with theirs in the future unless conditions were changed in continued Johnson think this Federal
