since Memphis State had an impressive win (29-22 over 8-2 Louisville and because the Metro plex and Memphis are two major markets" Murray got a piece of the TD receiving record in the third quarter grabbing a 22-yarder from Stevenson for the game's final points Northeast Louisiana had crept to within 7-6 early in the second period when Bill Weimer the freshman who played his high school ball at Paschal kicked his second field goal The 35-yarder was of the miraculous variety striking the top of the crossbar and bouncing over Stevenson who connected on 10 of 17 first-half passes for 131 yards later shook the Mean Green out of its first half funk In the final three-plus minutes Beaumont Joe moved NTS11 48 and 30 yards to provide the Mean Green with a more comfortable 21-6 intermission cushion sion shot next Saturday to skeptical bowl representatives "We had some long discussions about using Jordan but we felt like we could win with Stevenson" said Fry "Any little bit of playing time would have hurt his ranking" Stevenson helped dismantle John David Crow's upset-minded Indians with 14 completions in 31 attempts "I've been prepared for this" said Stevenson "I had a job to get done Jordan's a competitor and so am I If I can do as well in the spring as I have the last few games I'll have a shot for next year" ALTHOUGH HE PLAYED sparingly in the second half Jackson did nothing to hurt his national ranking (ninth in the nation in rushing 12th in all-purpose rurmingl snake-dancing for 161 yards in 18 pops "In the past few games the defenses have been keying on me so we've been able to open up other parts of our offense" said Jackson "Tonight I decided they were going to have to stop the other parts and me I still have a chance to get 1500 yards and I'm going to try and get it" The score could have been much worse N'TSU gained 448 total yards to 257 for NEAL "We don't have the killer instinct" said Fry "I really wasn't all that satisfied with our play The handle the job But thooe fears proved to be groundless "Give credit to the offensive line" Hadnot pleaded They did a super job Brian Nelson and Godfrey Turner threw some great downfield blocks" TCU coach FA Dry knew that Tech would go to the well often as liadnot had been unstoppable in the Red Raiders' three-game streak going into this game "But he's such a big back and he had a lot of area to run in Defensively we made a couple of changes for him" added Dry "But they didn't turn out as well as 1 had anticipated" DOCKERY LIKEWISE praised Had-not "He had another good game You know he's never missed an assignment He's fit right into the fullback groove" Just 16 seconds prior to liadnot's fourth-quarter touchdown jaunt Texas Tech's freshman quarterback Ron Reeves tossed a four-yard pass to split end Brian Nelson for a touchdown that gave the visitors' breathing room after the Frogs had climbed to Ihithin three points at 13-10 "The flow went one way" Nelson explained recalling that for two quarterbacks For the second straight Saturday normal starter Jordan Case remained on the Mean Green bench with a groin pull and again it was sophomore Stevenson who provided NTSIPs solution Stevenson and wide receiver Charlie Murray were the major offensive contributors in North Texas' 28-6 trampling of Northeast Louisiana Saturday night in the chill of Fouts Field Thus the Mean Green boosted its record to 8-2 and remains a very real minor bowl contender Next Saturday's Fouts Field visit by Memphis State most likely will decide if any post-season hotel accommodations will be necessary STEVENSON DISTRIBUTED four touchdown passes three to Murray giving the pass catcher a share of the Mean Green single-game record David Kervin was the most recent receiver to horn in on that group in 1973 Fry had the go-ahead from doctors to use Case if needed but decided to preserve the Seagoville junior's national passing and total offense statistics Fry vill present those numbers along night before falling by a narrow 81-76 margin to the Finland National basketball squad in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum "Anyone can see we're a much improved basketball team over last year" smiled head coach Tim Somerville after dropping his first game ever to an international squad "I saw a lot of things I like but there are still a lot of things we'll have to work on" If there's one thing the Frogs did show they would do this year its fastbreak "I said a long time ago that we'd run the ball a lot this year" said Somerville whose team opens its regular season in two weeks at home against St Edwards "We've got several young exciting players and I know our fans enjoyed watching them tonight" Finland led only once in the first half and the Horned Frogs built up a 29-19 advantage midway through the opening period TCU led 43-39 at halftime The visitors got the jump at the start of the second half and took a brief 49-47 lead before TCU came rolling back to regain the lead 51-49 on a short jumper by senior guard Aurdie Evans The Fins took the lead for good at the 9:07 mark but the Frogs were not out until the end "That's one thing that impressed me" continued Somerville "We kept our hustle all the time Most teams would get tired running like that but our boys were fresh the entire game" Senior Steve Scales who led the Frogs in nearly every category last season hit 14 points while freshman Jon Mansbury a "pleasant surprise" at forward tallied 11 points Both Scales and Mansbury grabbed eight rebounds and Scales handed out a game-high eight assists jet FINLAND (81)--Kaskol 54 13 lignell5 the football season started: -Has potential to become one of the top tight ends in the Southwest Conference excellent size speed and hands Early in the fourth quarter at Amon Carter Stadium Saturday afternoon Hadnot took a handoll and plunged for two yards That put Hadnot in exclusive company It gave the junior from Jasper 1001 not receiving Only one other Red Raider Doug NIcCutchen in 1970 on 25 carries Ills 23-yard gallop early in the fourth quarter ended in the end zone and chilled TCUs upset hopes as the shook Red Raiders assumed a 27-10 lead -IT WAS IDENTICAL to the play I ran or a touchdown against New Mexico" remembered Hadnot as he chatted with the news media in the cramped visitors' dressing room under the west stadium "It was a cutback play TCU's back side caved in All I had to do was beat the cornerback to the goal line I had the momentum going lie didn't" HadnoCs story is a familiar one by Penn State faces options on bowls (( "ntintit41 trimi pagt i Before Oklahoma was upset there was little doubt Patemo would take his team to the Orange Bowl to challenge the Sooners in a national championship game But now that he is in the driver's seat Paterno can attempt to find the easiest possible path to his first national championship His options would seem to be these lip could go ahead and take his team to the Orange Bowl against a Nebraska team that is gathering steam with each passing week after an early season loss to Alabama That seems doubtful if Patemo's object is to find the easiest possible opponent for the Nittanv Lions He could take his team to the Sugar Bowl for a probable game with Georgia The Bulldogs are a good bet to wind up in a tie with Alabama for the Southeastern Conference championship and get the automatic Sugar Bowl berth that goes to the SEC winner But Georgia still has to beat Auburn next week certainly no automatic happening to assure itself a share of the SEC title Paterno will probably wait until the Georgia-Auburn result is in before making his decision If Georgia loses then Alabama most likely will be the Sugar Bowl host having only to beat Auburn Dec 2 for the bid Paterno might not want to try Bear Bryant and his boys on either That would leave the Cotton Bowl and almost certainly the Houston Cougars who all but clinched the SWC host spot for the Dallas game with a 10-7 win over Texas Saturday If Paterno's choice is between Georgia and Houston speculation is he would pick the Sugar Bowl match If its between Houston and Alabama he'll probably brMg his team to Dallas If Patemo does indeed forsake the Orange Bowl Alabama could get the berth there opposite Nebraska Oklahoma becomes a Sugar Bowl candidate Should Patemo pick the Sugar Bowl and Alabama go to the Orange Bowl it would leave the Cotton Bowl in a bit of a spot and might possibly pave the way for a return visit by Notre Dame which has lost twice this season but remains an attractive candidate Whatever the pieces will all fit together next Joe Patemo makes his move ((ontinued from page I) similiar plays -They vere crossing patterns" said Dry -On the one near the goalline our cornerback just got picked off Tech hadnA used the crossing patterns until today" REEVES FIRST TD shot of 25 yards handed Tech a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter The second a four-yarder put Tech ahead 20-10 and quelled the mild TCU uprising three plays into the fourth quarter The uprising began when Dry turned to Stamp the freshman thrower from Carrollton Ile took over midway of the third quarter after starter Steve Bayuk had hit only two of nine for nine yards -Bayuk has been hitting 50 per cent this season but obviously Steve was off Quarterbacks are like baseball pitchers When they're off they're off Stamp got us back in the game" Dry said Stamp generated TCU's first touchdown to cut the margin to 13-10 It was a short 30-yard drive set up by a 30-yard punt return by Craig Richardson It was the best TCU return of the season The blocks were there and I saw a big hole It as long overdue" said Richardson Big play was a pass interference call against the Raiders at their two and Jimmy Allen TCU's top rusher with 53 yards got the six-points on a one-yard dive BUT BEFORE STAMP could get the offense back on the field Tech rang up the quick 14 points and the issue was settled But Stamp didn't quit He passed TCU to a late touchdown a nine-yarder to Michael Milton Milton made a sensational grab for 36 yards to get the drive in motion All the Frog offense could muster was a 23-yard Greg Porter field goal in the first half to trim the Raider lead to 10-3 But some sloppy defsnsive play gave Tech the three points back in the final seconds before intermission -Our big errors today were penalties on defense" said Dry We get three 15- yarders right before half" Two late hits fueled the Tech drive but the effort appeared to be wasted as Reeves was sacked near the five-yard line by the Frogs' John Wade But yet another penalty stopped the clock with three seconds left A facemask call enabled Fort Worths Bill Adams to boot a 19-yard field goal for a 13-3 halftime lead "If they don't call that penalty the clocks runs out" Dry said -I asked who grabbed Reeves mask and the officials didn't know or that's the report I got" Dry said "They didn't know who did it only it was a purple arm Well the purple onour uniforms doesn't even go up to the elbow They called a facemask on an unknown player -That changes the situation" Dry said of the game's end -A 24-17 game is quite a bit different from 27-17" Yet the difference remained youthful mistakes "I don't think the mistakes are because were young" said linebacker Kelvin Newton "But it's time for us to mature" The big play was the fumbled kickoff and five of the last six TCU turnovers have come at the hands of freshmen And perhaps the calendar holds the irony of this afternoon It was Veteran's Day RUSHING: Tech: Hadnot 15-166 Reeves 17-79 Dangerfield's line about going to a fight arid having a hockey game break which may explain why he doesn't get any respect Anyway it was pretty much that way at Fair Park Coliseum Saturday night as Dallas and Fort Worth got together for one of those ice-bound blood-lettings There were as many fights as there were goals scored and to the unbiased observer Dallas gets the nod on both counts The Hawks wallowing in the Central Hockey League cellar broke a scoreless tie with two goals in the second period and hung on for a 3-1 victory over the Texans before 2814 very vocal fans Three busiest guys on the ice were Texan goalie Goran Hogosta Hawk goaltender Larry Hendrick and referee Chuck Bad ield Oh yeah and the guy who opens the door to the penalty box so the skaters can get in and out in a hurry Which they did with alarming frequency Hogosta kept the score from looking more like a football game than a hockey match Hendrick kept it from resembling a basketball game and Banfield was almost helpless in trying to keep it from resembling an inner-city barroom on a payday night Fifteen times Banfield whistled down penalties and eight of them resulted in a player from each side getting slapped with an inf raction And four of those were to break up acts of pugilism The lads were so busy trying to intimidate each other in the first period they didn't have time to follow the prime directive which is putting the puck in the net First penalties were meted out just 34 seconds into the game and that set the tone for the rest of the evening Before the 20-minute segment had run its ragged course Banfield had detected three roughings two cross-checkings an interference and four Wits and a game misconduct for making an obscene gesture Sounds more like the script from a Dead End Kids movie than a hockey game In the second period Dallas finally broke the deadlock when Tom Roulston converted a pass from the boards into a 20-foot bullet that whistled past Hogosta into the back of the cage And exactly three minutes later with both teams skating a man short Greg Hubick provided what proved to be the winner when he too moved into close range unhampered and fired a strike past the unprotected Hogosta The Texans losing for the first time to the Hawks after three straight wins made it 2-1 on Hector Marini's goal midway of the final period But before the Texans could mount one of their patented comebacks the Hawks put it out of reach on Brad Smith's goal with eight minutes still left in the contest Hendrick property of the World Hock- ey Association Edmonton
