1 STS. We ask democrats if they can possibly better themselves or- their interests by voting for any ol the Independents now in thi iield over your nominees. Lightning struck a tree in Mr. V. S.

Lnsk's yard Sunday evening. As the tree stood about tbe ceutcr of a group of republican voters, we can bnt think it was a warning to them to beware what hey do next Thursday. Mr. Tommie Candler says to Mr, Carter, You're a Jack-leg lawyer." Capt. Carter says to Mr.

Tommie Candler, I would rather be a Jack-leg lawyer, than a jackass politician." And Mr. Tommie proceeded! to bray himself along the track. i Doe Maj. Erwin endorse the negro Collins for Solicitor iu tiie Wake District? If so, should he be elected Solicitor of our district? If not, should be run on a ticket with Cocke lor Judge, who is rui.ningon the same ticket with tie negro in that district. Democrats, stand by your colors, and be true to you: selves.

Tbe route to the mountains, over the Western Xorth Carolina Railroad, is becoming quite popular since tbe fast, close-connecting train was put on. The Charlotte observer says, "The every -otber-day accommodation train on tiie Western North Carolina Railroad is being very well patronized. The Rich inond Danville train, two or three nights since, discharged seventy passengers at Salisburj', who immediately boarded the Western train for the mountains." Elder John Amnions, editor of tbe Baptist Gleaner, will attend the different meetings of the Baptist Associations to be held in Western Carolina during the months of August and September. We are pleased to know that the subscription list of the Gkaner is being constantly added to. Tbe Baptists of Western Carolina should give it a hearty support.

Grand Concekt. A grand vocal and instrumental concert will be given at the Court House on Monday night next, under the direction of Prof A Chase, for the benefit of tbe Methodist Church. We will publish the program in Friday's issue. Rev. Dr.

Taylor's lecture, "The Xorth and the South," by request of many, will be reprated under the aus- Ticket. For the Senate Theo. Da vidson, of Buncombe. House of Rei'resestatites Mel- Tin E. Carter, Natt Atkinson.

Euwin claims to be running as independent of all parties, is neither democrat or republican fish, flesh or fowl, pig or pup, still his tickets are printed with Capt. Cocke for Judge, which, according to Gorman and the radical executive committee of this county, is the republican ticket for this district. Maj. Erwin is not a republican. Oil, no! But he runs on the republican ticket with independents, thus trying to disorganize the democratic party.

And yet be says be will get democratic votes. Is it so Messrs. Bailey. This firm, for reasons they deem satisfactory, have withdrawn their splendid stage line from the Western Xorth Carolina Railroad connection, and placed it entirely on the Spartanburg line. They inform us their reason for this is that certain railroad officials were instrumental in getting an opposition line to run ou this road; and while they do not object to opposition anywhere, yet they conceived the spirit of this to have been an.

ungenerous one toward them, and therefoie pre fe red to leave the tield We trust that while the managers of the new line are saving time over tbe late schedule, they will be as punctual in the delivery of passengers and baggage as Messrs. W. B. have always been. We hope both lines may have all they can do, and will do it well.

All tickets purchased over W. line will be made perfectly good and satisfactory. Fagg Spreading Himself. The following letter from a distressed Ten-uesseean was received bv our candidate for the Senate Monday morning: Wolf Creek, July 25th. Mr.

Davidson: This is to let you know that Mr. M. J. Fagg is very busy electioneering iu Tennessee. He made a speech last night to about fifteen persons who were with a thresher.

Can't you stop him or keep bint in his own State? I think he made some votes. Yours, We thought from the Captain's speeches that he was expecting a heavy "lift" from South Carolina, br.t hoped he would leave Tennessee alone. The Baptist Concert The at tendance last Friday night, on the occasion of the concert given by tite ladies of the above church, was much larger than was anticipated in fact the Hall was well filled with a highly cultivated and appreciative audience. The programme, which embraced many choice gems, both vocal and instrumental, was artistically carried out to the letter, several of the number eliciting hearty encores- The whole affair passed o(T most pleasantly, and a neat sum wa realized. Our Baptist friends are grateful to the public for its generous attendance, but specially to those kind liiends who assisted them.

I The Rumor has been started that Mr. T. F. Davidson, our candidate for about du majority Ins favor, over both Trull and Fagg. The annual meeting of tbe stockhohl ers ol Spartanburg and Asheville Rail road Company will be iu Ilendrr- on tne.

14th of An: iwt. See issue tbe Citizen in balf sheet form today (Monday On Friday eve ning we will get out another issue, giving all the election returns up to that date, both from this section and from the central portion of the State, as we shall receive dispatch es from Raleigh, Charlotte and elsewhere. There will be no regular issue on Thursday. Ordained. Mr.

Atkinson, of Xewherne, was ordained deacon in the Protestant Episoopal Church, at the Episcopal Church, this place, last Sabbath, by Bishop Atkinson, assisted by Drs. Buxton and Hall, the latter of Brooklyn, Xew York. I he Bishop seunon was one of the most appropriate and impressive we ever heard, being an exposition of the duties and character of tiie nttiee about to be assumed by the young candidate, and an earnest exhortation to him to prove himself faithful throughout. The church was crowded. Several were con-lirmed.

The Richest Tkeat our people have 'en favored with recently was given at the Court House on Wednesday evening last, under the auspices of the Asheville Beading Club. We refer to the lecture by lion. X. G. Taylor of Tennessee, entitled The Xorth and the South." Tbe masterly manner in which the subject was handled drew forth the hearty and cheerful encomiums of the best minds in the audience, and the chaste and elegant maimer of its delivery was received with merited applause.

Dr. Taylor, besides being a gentleman of great intellectual ability, is one of Nature's orators, being one of the most popular platform speakers we have ever heard. We are pleased to learn that by special request of many of our citizens, Dr. T. has consented to repeat the lecture at some time during the next week, and we commend it to our people as an op portunity rarely met with iu the line of public lectures.

The French Broad River. Prof. Kerr, our State Geologist, who has bsen traveling throu'di our section for the past two weeks, took the measurement of the French Broad and other rivers, and very kindly furnished us the figures, for which we thank him. 'Ihe French Broad River is one-third larger at the Warm Springs than at Asheville the discharge of water at the latter place being CO, 000 cubic feet, and at the Springs per minute. The horse-power per foot of fall, at Asheville, is 123; at the Springs, 167 that is, a dam at Asheville 10 feet high would give a power equal to 1250 horses, and between Asheville and Paint Rock would give a power equal to 120,000 horses one twenty fifth of the entire horse-power of tiie State.

The Xollechucky River, which divides the counties of Mitchell and Yancey and runs into the State of Tennessee, possesses about five per cent, more hoise-power at the State lino than the French Broad does at Asheville. Caney River is larger at Bnrnsville than at its mouth, twelve miles below there being a difference of about twenty per cent. The fall of the French Broad River between Asheville and the Warm Springs is about feet. The volume of water in the Xorth Toe River, Mitchell county. Is sevei.ty-live per cent, larger than that of tbe South Toe.

The latter is about the same size of Cauev River. Tall Oats Our energetic country man and true democrat, Mr. Pleasant Israel of Leicester township, lias placed iu our office, to be shipped to the Agricultural Mjuscuui at Raleigh, a bundle of oats wkieh measures six feet. is beautiful. We want all of our tanners to have good specimens of farm products-on hand in Asheville on the 24tli of August, at the tune Col.

Polk speaks. Dress Ball at Warm Springs. The first grand dress ball of the seasou will take place at the Warm Springs on Friday night next, 2d pros. There are over three hundred, and fifty guests now at this delightful watering place, and the stages daiiy make large additions thereto Married, lit Statesville, on the evening of the 17th at the residence of the bri.ie's mother, Mrs. Amanda G'A- oi tne nnne mot ler.

urs. i Jeswie, by Rev Boone, Mr Mer- riiuou oi r.Hnconioe ami i.i:ne a July 22, 1878. A IMKIk. To the Citizens of (he Forty-Firit Senatorial 'District, composed of the Counties of Hayicood, Henderson and Transylvania: take this way of giving you geueral notice that I am a candidate for the Senate. My reasons for coming out at this late hour are the following First, because the nomination was not satisfactory, iu that it gave us a candidate who is not a sound democrat, nor could I say he is a sound re-publiean.

Secondly, because it has been patent ever since the nomination, and especially so lately, that the people could not support the nominee nor vote for a man of such political character. Thirdly, because many of my friends have been continually urging me to allow my name to be run. Xow I am no bolter. 1 am a democrat, and I want those who support mo in this district to support me as a democrat. I hope I may have the support of all good men, but I would not have it under a false pretence; and, should I be chosen by the people, I shall faithfully look after the interests ot the people the whole people.

Knowing that there is and discretion with the people, I shail be satisfied with their decision. Very respectfully, Dan. Jones. Mills River, X.C., July 13, IS78. NEW A DVEItTISEMENTS.

Don't forget the large mass-meeting to be held at Beaver Dam Church, near Asheville, on Saturday, August 3d, to discuss the feasibility of the French Broad Branch Railroad going through Asheville by way of Wea-verville, and reaching the French Broad River at the mouth of Ivy. A large crowd will be presert. SHAMEFUL. To see one old, gray-haired man, not far from the grave, arraigned before our Mayor for cursing and abusing another oid gentleman, and be a worthy and loved minister of the gospel. Sucli was the scene Saturday, when Col.

Fagg, the postmaster, was arrested and carried before Mayor Suin-iney and lined for abusing so excellent and good a man as Rev. Mont. Weaver. Col. Fagg wont gain votes for his zebra-striped, leopard-spotted ticket of Independents" and Republicans" by such a course.

The Colonel ought to be ashamed of himself. Valuable Ore. Prof. Kerr visited and examined what is known as the Eller Iron Ore Beds, on Capt. W.

B. Smith's land, in this county. He pronounces this deposit a line magnetic ore. like that of Cranberry, highly po-laric, very dense, and a very pure and valuable ore. It lies within two miles of the 'proposed French Broad River Railroad- Good Oats.

Our friend John II. Ilennesee, the popular Register of Deeds for Cherokee county, writes us that on the 13th ult. be thrashed twenty-live dozen and two bundles of Chinese Rust-Proof Oats, and measured 2GJ bushels heaping of the oats. The thresh'ng and measuring was done iu the presence of a number of gentlemen whose names are included iu -the letter. Mr.

Ilennesee will send to any man one gallon of the oats for fifty cents. Our farmers should always avail themselves of opportunities to procure the best seeds. A Beautiful Sentiment. Dr, Chalmer beautifully says The lit tie that I have seen in the world, and know of the history of mankind, teaches me to look upon their errors with sorrow, not in anger. When I take the history of one poor heart that has sinned and suffered, and represent to myself the struggles and temptations it passed through in the brief pulsations of joy the tears of regret the feebleness of purpose tbe scorn of the world that has little charity; the desolation of the soul's sanctuary, and threatening voices within health gone happiness gone I would fain leave the ening soul of my feliow-man -with Him from whose bauds it came."
