It is strange that some of our grwat political economists, such as Judge Kelly and Stanley have not perceived the immense disadvantage under whirh we labor in consequence of our lack of volcanoes, "and have not "long since devised a plan for developing American volcanoes, thereby enabling ns to co i pete with the pauper volcanoes of effete Europe.

There are, however, a few far-seeing and patriotic men in North Carolina, who for several years have labored, in their private capacity, and without any Congressional aid, to produce a purely American volcano. These men reside in the neighborhood of Bald Mountain a region peculiarly adapted for the accomodation of Summer boarders. Every year since 1872 they have be gun a series of volcanic entertainments at Bald Mountain early in May. At first they contented them -selves with announcing that the moun ain was groaning and giving out other doleful and ominous noises. This ought to have attracted public attention and private boarders, but it did nothing of the kind.

The mountain -labored day after day, but aid not bring forth the smallest se cimen of a tourist. Then in the Summer of 1875, it was advertised that a magnificent smoking performance on the part of the mountain was in progress. This time people began to take a lanu vl interest in fie affair, and the Ileruld an Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Bald Mountain region. Unfortunately tiie Envoy did not see any smoke or hear any mountainous groanings. The reason of this failure, hag bevei been clearly ascertained, VVhetli-his Trinity College accent made him unintelligible to: the North Carolinians, go Vn he could not ask the way to Bald Mountain, or whether the volcano-manufacturers omitted to pay hint the courtesies due to' his position, and thus incurred las', displeasure, we shall nev er It is boweverv.vcry certain that he.

did not say a single good word for, Bald Mountain; but on the contrary produced the impression on the readers of the Uer ai that Bald MttMttUun was a pre tense asd a delusion. Most men would have been discouraged by those successive fail rcs, but the volcano producers were made of -sterner stuff. This Spriag thy have swept and garnished their houses and put them in for hoped-for boarders, and they have spent large sums of money in telegrams asserting that Bald Mountain I as suddenly split tn two. 1 tie splitting look place in the night, and was accomplished by a noise several times louder than the best quality of and id the morning a chasm 300 feet long, 10 feet and of unknown but evidently enormous depth, was found on'the side of the' mountain. There is a strong smell of sulphur in the air, especially when a few of the Bald Mountain small-boys are assembled together, and although neitber smoke, flames, nor lava have yet appeared, they are looked for at any moment.

If this does not bring boarders to the Bald Mountain region, ought to come to the aid i of the volcano producers with large appropriation. Tne. industry and skill of these men must be rewarded, and their efforts- to introduce purely home-made volcanoes must be sustained, American travelers should'Be strictly prohibited from looking at European volcanoes, and a bonus should be given to every boarder who willgo to.Bald Mountain and certify that it is a real volcano. With a little' organizad effort, and a sufficient appropriation, we shall soon have our broad land dotted with American volcanoes. If we are to subsidize American steamers and American Pacific railroads, by all means let U3 subsidize American volcanoes.

Those Mountain men have worked long and hard, and are as much entitled to boarders as the Pacific Mail Company or Col. Thomas Scott, i3 entitled to steam-ships, and railroads passengers.
