SallieGoodin by Ralph Dice FRANKLIN ALBUM Louis and Larry Franklin have teamed up for a father-and-son album of Texas fiddle music that includes some twin fiddling. Louis, Larry Franklin Texas fiddling album Regular readers of Sallie Goodin have often come across (lie name of Louis Franklin, a fiddler from Whitewrighl. Louis has been winning Texas fiddle contests for years. He won the World Championship contest in Crockett seven times. Louis has won quite a few contests in the Paris area.

You may have heard him fiddle at the Red River Valley Exposition Old-Time Fiddler's Contest at the fairgrounds or at Harry Smith's contest out at Harry's place near Powderly. At Commerce, Louis won the contest at East Texas State several times. The A.C. "Eck" Robertson award has been presented to Louis for his activity in promoting old- time Texas style fiddling. LAKKY FUANKLIN Louis' son Larry probably cut his teeth on a fiddle.

When his daddy went to fiddle contests, young Larry went along. Larry absorbed a lot of Texas style fiddling during his youth from being around people like Vernon and Norman Solomon, Benny Thompson and his Uncle Major Franklin, all well known Texas fiddlers. Larry was a member of the band, Cooder Browne. The group played in the Austin area and recorded several numbers on the Lone Star label. An Austin magazine called Larry the "fiddling phenomenon" from Whilewright, the "fiddle capital of North Texas." After Cooder Browne disbanded.

Larry formed the Larry Franklin Band. FRANKLIN AMiUM If you would like to have a sampling of Franklin fiddling in your own home, you now have an opportunity. Louis and Larry have a new fiddling album out. It's called "Louis and Larry Franklin's Keepsake Album." SIDE ONE On side one, Louis and Larry team up for some twin fiddling on "Twin Fiddle Rag," "That's a Plenty" and "Silver Lake Blues." Larry plays "Don't Let the Deal Go Down" and "Billy in the Low Ground." Louis plays "Say Ole Man" and "Sop'n the Gravy." SIDE TWO "Polecat Hornpipe," and original tune written and played by Larry Franklin leads off side two. Louis also plays an original composition, "Honey Father and son do some twin fiddling on "Jessie Polka" and "La Golendrina." Larry plays "Dusty Miller" and "Tom and Jerry." Also on side two is Louis playing "SallieGoodin." GUITAR PICKERS the fiddlers on the "Keepsake Album" are Dave Davison 'of Paris, Bobby Christmas of Pottsboro, Royce Franklin Keller and Ray Franklin of San Antonio.

Ray and Royce are sons of Major Franklin and cousins to Louis. Dave, a native of Red River County, now lives on 31st NE and works for the highway department. NOTES AND STUFF Fiddler E. J. Hopkins from the Houston area wrote the liner notes on Louis and Larry.

There are short biographical sketches of the four guitar pickers. I'm glad to see that because sometimes the accompanists are overlooked. The album is dedicated to Louise Franklin, Louis' wife and Larry's mother. J. T.

McBroom shot the cover photograph. The album was recorded at PolJaro Studios in Denison. Sid Whatley was the engineer. VARIETY There is a variety of Texas style fiddling on the Franklin album: breakdowns, rags, a polka and twin fiddling, etc. And speaking of twin fiddling, "Twin Fiddle Rag" will blow your socks off.

To sum it all up, I'll justi say this is one excellent 1 album. 11 justi Bluegrass Winterfest slated for Kerrville KERRVILLE As a special event of the 10th Anniversary Season of the Kerrvillc Music Festivals, festivals founder-producer Rod Kennedy has scheduled the area's first Bluegrass Winterfest indoors at Kerrvillc Municipal Auditorium on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21-22. Kerrville has been the host city for seven Labor Day weekend bluegrass festivals since 1974 and a number of smaller bluegrass concerts, but this will be the first major bluegrass "winter event" in Ihc Texas Hill Country. The new event will provide a family audience with six hours of music from 6 p.m. to Midnight Friday, twelve hours of music from noon to midnight on Saturday and three hours Sunday from 11 a.m.

to 2 p.m. The weekend will be filled with outstanding bluegrass performers including famed Japanese fiddle player Shoji Tabuchi, Knoxville fiddle- guilar-singing favorite Joe Stuart, and Bill Grant and Delia Bell of the big Hugo Bluegrass Festival in Oklahoma. Texas-based bands at Kerrville in March will include the popular Shady Grove Ramblers from Irving, the House Brothers from Dallas, Grassfire from Austin, the Cooke Brothers from Waxahachie, Hickory Hill from Avinger, the Powell Family from Fort Worth, the Salt Creek Express from Garland and Kerrvillc's own Poverty Playboys.
