and drives the kids to school in a frightening 70s beater that breaks the sound barrier when it backfires Sure gross but lovable too You'll want to reach right up to the screen and chub his obese cheeks what John Hughes director and WTiter of Uncle Buck is counting on He has packed this film to the gills with repulsive yet sympathetic schtick Whenever his protagonist Buck Russell rolls in you laugh while you cover your eyes Think Freddy Krueger in a 46 waist polyester suit and got it Irresponsible oafish and possessed with the worst taste possible Uncle Buck is a nightmare melded with a sweet dream He is here in the delightfully calm suburb of Northbrook to tend his to love these silly little moppets and they him Unemployed for years he also learns to embrace responsibility along with a can of Lemon Pledge Hughes director of Molly Ring-wald career-makers like Pretty in Pink and 16 Candles once again surrounds his formulaic pranks and pratfalls with acute topical sensibilities He has an uncanny ear for capturing the youthful slang and attitude of the day and does it here with hilarious results Uncle Buck however is film from start to finish Wickedly underplayed the role of Uncle Buck allows the adroit comic actor to blend physical comedy with small moments of tender reflection When these moments mesh as they do in the off the elementary school scene he is a large wonder CHRISTINE ARNOLD DOLEN Herald Theater Critic For a week in October 1962 life in Miami from a view seemed both normal and terrifying Normal because at one elementary school it was the exciting week of the Halloween Carnival Because lessons went on as usual Because exile children from a place called Cuba were joining the classes forever changing the community that would be theirs for longer than anyone could have imagined And terrifying because that was the week of the Cuban Missile Crisis when the end of the world might be just 90 miles and one grave confrontation away That crisis and that context form the backdrop for Miami playwright Susan new work 1962 Written for Teatro Avante under the Miami Art Bridge program 1962 seeks to examine a Miami on the cusp of change And it does though sweeping social gaze and storytelling concerns sometimes seem too much for a single play She focuses mainly on the teachers with each woman typifying GROSS BUT LOVABLE: John Candy is Uncle Buck fers accordingly and becomes so much like the unnatural potato chips and pretzel food snacks that our hero is fond of noshing Uncle Buck tastes great yes But it sure fill you up relationships at that time seem unlikely Mario Ernesto Sanchez has directed cinematically styled script with fluidity emotion and humor though some of his choices are awkward (having characters slip into school desks their backs to the audience having two teachers back into each other and dissolve into inexplicable giggles) Designers Rolando Moreno (set costumes and lighting) and Raul Reyes-Roque (music and sound) have created a wonderful world for the play sending the audience back to '62 in a time machine fueled by teased hairdos (by Carlos Gomery) period clothes and the sounds of Soldier Boy Though 1962 is not an unforgettable play it helps us to remember a crucial week in contemporary history and to understand how the Miami of 1989 was shaped by the Miami of 1962 a SHOWS STARTING BEFORE 6 PM SENIOR CITIZENS
