Tribune "Appliance ecology the time is now" a consumer specialist for General Electric Co tells audiences when she is traveling across the country stumping for energy conservation "The switch is to conservation" a leaflet tells power users in the East Engineers at Sunbeam Corp in Chicago are testing their portable appliances to see if they are more energy-efficient than electric ranges (In many cases they are) And salesmen for Sears major appliances can supply consumers with some hard facts on dollar savings on electric bills when they purchase an energy-efficient refrigerator (It costs more initially but the difference in purchase price can be made up in a little more than 15 months at current energy rates) For consumers who account for about 20 per cent of the total energy consumed in the United States the biggest potential for energy savings is in the efficient use of central heating and cooling equipment The water heater is next Then comes food freezers and refrigerators dishwashers and ranges washers and dryers Portable appliances such as coffeemakers fry pans blenders and Masters use very little power when compared with major appliances The conservation message is clear from all sources Yet consumers have been slow to heed it until they see that it can mean a reduction in utility bills or at least minimized rate increases Energy conservation is a task for consumers as well as industry according to one appliance industry spokesman Following are some energy-saving ways to better utilize the equipment you now have in the kitchen The incentive: It may mean cost-savings for you REFRIGERATOR-FREEZER Don't open refrigerator door unnecessarily Don't overcrowd refrigerator It interfers with air circulation and overworks the compressor On the other hand keep your freezer filled to capacity It works more efficiently when full Check gaskets around the door to see that they are tightly sealed Keep area behind and below refrigerator clean and free from obstructions for better air circulation Clean condenser coils regularly Defrost manual-defrost refrigerator when frost becomes one-fourth-inch thick Let hot dishes cool to near room temperature before putting in refrigerator or freezer RANGE TOPS AND OVENS use flat-bottomed pots and pans with tight-fitting lids Match size of cooking utensil to surface unit When cooking vegetables use as little water as possible Preheat oven only when needed For dishes that cook an hour or longer it is not necessary to preheat oven Lower oven temperature 25 degrees when baking in glass or ceramic utensils Thaw frozen foods before' cooking Keep oven door closed when cooking Peeking lets heat escape and thus wastes energy Bake large batches of food at one time and freeze some for later When using oven plan whole menu for oven cooking DISHWASHER Wash only when you have a full load Turn off drying cycle open door and let dishes dry with retained heat or use power-saver if your model has one Use cold water rather than hot to rinse dishes before loading in washer FOOD WASTE DISPOSER Use cold water to operate Hot water isn't necessary and wastes the energy it takes to heat it PORTABLE APPLIANCES Use cover close vents on electric fry pans for faster cooking Use one appliance for a complete meal (Divide skillet in thirds with foil and use it to cook or reheat three kinds of foods Use a griddle to cook eggs bacon or sausage and pancakes for breakfast) Use timer to shut off appliance at certain time if you are away from kitchen Stir-fry method of cooking in an electric wok can save energy Food cooks quickly when cut in small-size pieces In general appliances designed for specific purposes are better energy savers than general purpose appliances MICROWAVE OVENS Energy savings are greater when a large percentage of foods are cooked via microwaves Use microwave for tasks it does best (quickest Microwave ovens are more efficient when small quantities of food are cooked in it Long cooking can turn round steak into fork-tender meat In this recipe the meat cooks in a spicy sauce in the oven producing a tender oven-barbecued round steak OVEN BARBECUED BEEF ROUND STEAK 4 pounds beef top
