Super Bowl you stayed up nights for a year you couldn't design a course better suited to the golf game of Severiano Ballesteros than the Masters at Augusta National You talk about the right-field fence in Yankee Stadium for Babe Ruth talk about a small ring for Jack Dempsey or try to think of a game you could invent better suited to the talents of Wilt Chamberlain than basketball and you have some idea what the Masters means to the game of young Senor Ballesteros In the first place it's wide open You can spray at Augusta The fairways are as wide as a politician's smile There's no rough There's no out-of-bounds You can let 'er fly No matter where it winds up chances are you'll have a shot You have to be long not straight There's really no great premium on accuracy You have to be high There are times when that second shot has to come up over tall pine trees In spite of what they tell you it's really not a thinking man's golf course It's like fighting a bull Its not going to outthink you It hasn't got the brains It's just kind of brutish 2000 pounds of treachery and malice Sometimes it's a bad bull But it still doesn't have a mind of its own 0 The field is not much It's cluttered with a bunch of amateurs and with old-timers who sometimes give the proceedings a wax-museum effect There's a hard core of tour winners from the past there aren't many The field is invited only 80 players versus the 150 or so who tee it up in the regular PGA tour events and it's always awash with foreign players some of dubious mettle It's a laudable attempt to internationalize the field but the facts are of the many foreigners to tee it up over the years Seve Ballesteros is only the second ever to win it Gary Player was the first This is not to say this captain from Castile cannot play the game He surely can They originally just sent a car for him to tee it up in this thing but now he has qualified for it in the hardest possible way by winning This year was the second time he has done that He has won one other American tour event the 1978 Greensboro when he was only 20 years old He won the British Open in 1979 at age 21 But his record in the Masters suggests this is the golf equivalent of a right-hander playing in Fen-way Park or a shark fighting you in waterThe young matador has played in six Masters He has won two He finished one stroke behind in '82 He missed the cut only one year He finished 10th one year and 7th the other 0 If a guy on a boat won that regularly it would behoove you to cut the deck once in a while To be sure the players chasing him this year all fell on their swords on the back nine Never have so few Ballesteros) owed so much to so many (Floyd Stadler Watson) As commentator Ken Venturi noted "I can't remember when three players of the caliber of Floyd Stadler and Watson have played as poorly collectively as these" Veteran Masters watchers never saw such shoddy play from superior players a surprising display of duck hooks stubbed putts double-bogeys and bladed trap shots For Ballesteros the Masters is like having your own dice He can't believe his good luck It's like Nolan Ryan looking at an unlimited strike zone Wherever he hits the ball Sevy (as the pros call him in their lighter moments their other terms for him are rated can go play it This is a big plus for Severiano Ballesteros because he frequently hits a ball off the tee in the general direction of the rest of the world and Just hopes it comes down When someone once expressed surprise that a young fellow like Ballesteros could learn to play world-class golf in a country like Spain a listener replied: "Yeah the way he hits it he has trouble keeping it on the continent" Gary Player once observed: "Sevy's inquisitive He wants to go Please 36 before the leaves fall and they share the distinction of being among the most disappointed of the disappointed when the Chargers lost to Miami in January At their ages they annually assess retirement in terms of that One More Shot at the Super Bowl Should the Chargers fail to come to terms with quarterback Fouts they agree that One More Shot it 1983 could well be somewhat of a longshot Ed Luther they also agree could well be an exceptional quarterback somewhere down the road but football players who are 35 going on 36 do not have lengthy roads to contemplate "I think we would eventually get to the Super Bowl without Dan Fouts" White said "but I don't feel we can get there without him this year No" If Fouts was not to sign would White retire? "It may have an affect" he said "but I can't say it would be an absolute At this point I'm planning on playing I'm working out harder than I ever have in the off-season and I'm coming off the best season I've had since I've been here" renaissance in his 30s with Fouts throwing the football "Dan's been my quarterback for the last seven years" Joiner said "and I'm going to miss him if the Chargers don't sign him I'd miss him as a friend and we'd miss his leadership most of all And I know I'd miss his uncanny ability to throw into a crack in the defense White is one of Fouts' closest off the-field friends They share the same mischievous sense of humor and whimsical irreverence in the face of the seriousness and intensity of the National Football League They showed up in undersized leisure suits at a New Year's Eve party before the memorable playoff game in Miami two seasons ago "I certainly don't think I'd enjoy a season like I do with Dan there" White said "We have a lot of fun and I think that's part of a successful season A lot of my fun evolves around Dan" And also a lot of success White and Joiner both concede that the Super Bowl is the golden carrot that brings them back "My goal is to get there" White said "Not just get close You have to be on a team with the right make-up of individuals I've been lucky I've only missed the playoffs twice" Please see Foun Page 16 And what about Joiner? Would he retire if Fouts was no longer piloting Air Coryell? That" he said "would be very possible I Just hope things will be worked out Not just for myself but for the city and the fans and the other players" Optimistic? Not very Fouts' contract will be not Charger owner Eugene Klein and Howard Slusher the quarterback's attorney "They've had run-ins before" Joiner said "and they weren't very friendly run-ins They're both businessmen and I hope they don't let personal feelings get in the way" Klein and Slusher clashed of course when Fouts' last contract was negotiated in 1977 And they were also the antagonists in L'Affair Jefferson in 1981 White and Joiner in truth expressed little hope that the latest Fouts Situation would be resolved It was as though Fouts already was gone and they were talking about what life without him would be like As White said: "My gut feeling is that he won't be with us" White and Joiner each described Fouts as a close friend Fouts invariably praises the work of his offensive linemen and the 275-pound White is a solid block in the middle of that line And Joiner is the wide receiver who enjoyed a By STEV DOLA rillif'S Staff Writer SAN DIEGO-1f the topic is reli gion philosophy or jazz music Eric Show usually knows the answer And if the topic is pitching base balls Show normally comes up with the answer too The difference however is that Show often questions himself while coming up with the solution on the mound Ile solved a five-game losing streak for the Padres by allowing Just one run in 7 23 innings Wednesday night But in the process of beating San Francisco 2-1 Show was questioning how well he really was doing "Ile does it all the time" catcher Terry Kennedy said "Ile never thinks he is throwing well Ile doesn't realize what the ball is doing at the plate" Show also went through a period last year when he was critical of himself despite getting positive results Finally his stock quote be came "good stuff is outs" If that is true Show certainly had good stuff while scattering eight hits against the Giants "Ile is smarter than all of us" Manager Dick Williams said As intelligent as he is he belittles his ability his ball was moving all over the place "1 look for big big things from him this year Ile could be our biggest winner and that's not tak ing away from the other pitchers" Gary Lucas who was much maligned in 1982 again came through with positive results Ile pitched perfect innings of relief to earn his second save Show meanwhile actually had trouble concentrating on the task at hand His 78-year-old grandmother Pearl Trijack had died the day before in Riverside She was an avid baseball fan and always listened to the Padre games on radio Show said that Pearl's husband was probably even listening to the game Wednesday "1 was going on a lot of emotion" Show said "I was a little more sensitive than usual I was doing things like talking to myself on the mound I usually don't do that" Johnnie LeMaster had led off the game for San Francisco by doing the totally unexpected He hit Show's second pitch over the left field wall for his third home run in three years Show was to struggle somewhat throughout leaving runners stranded on second base in the fourth through sixth innings He got out of the fourth on a double-play ball and the fifth when third baseman Kurt Bevacqua made a good running catch on a foul ball In the Please see PADRES Page 13 11-4 victory over the Golden Bay Earthquakes The goalkeeper juggling act by Newman was just further proof that the Sockers won't be dull even though they have the Major Indoor Soccer Leagues Western Division title under wraps This was their first game since clinching first place on Sunday "It's something that we had taked about" Newman said of using Deyna "Tonight we got the courage to do it At the beginning of the Please see SOCK ERS Page 13 reassurance he'd be back Silas said "None whatsoever" Silas however seems a lot more concerned about the future of Clipper forward Terry Cummings than about himself After nearly 20 years in pro basketball Silas isn't worried about his ability to earn a living But he is worried about Cummings "I've told Terry he should see the very best doctor in the world and find out what's wrong" Silas said Please see CLIPPERS Page 16 C) Newman Juggles Goalies Sockers Roll to 11-4 Win 0 ') Diego Sockers Coach Ron Newman replaced his workhorse goalkeeper Alan Mayer with reserve Jim Gorsek Wednesday night That was unusual enough but when he replaced Gorsek with Kaz Deyna during man-advantage situations that really raised a few eyebrows Newman obviously knew what he was doing however because the Sockers scored twice with Deyna playing the role of a sixth attacker and San Diego rolled to an easy Elway Finds His Options Are Many By WILL McDONOUGH Boston Globe BOSTON Think you've had a bad week?
