sincerity Here EVFs brand of sacred pop is no less polished but it is the group's most convincing effort in years At its best EWF can produce artful ideas built on stinging punches of rhythm and horn arrangements and those rose-colored views of utopia can appear pretty invigorating in this framework At its worst EWF can indulge in the weirdest wordplay producing songs like "Freedom of Choice" with these head-scratcher lyrics: "Instead of getting betterRain is getting wetter to a fair reality" Huh? White has his virtues as a lyricist but coherence isn't always one of them Though this album isn't as ambitious as 1980's "Faces" a bloated two-record set it does show why EWF is one of the masters of studio pop "Fall in Love With Me" ( the new single) and "The Speed of Love" allow for scatty rude-boy vocals from White They're both packed with the chiming multilayered backup vocals and complex melodic development that are quintessential EWF The frisky hook-heavy strut of "Straight From the Heart" is fun too Here singer Philip Bailey gets to play wry funkateer with his supple reed-thin falsetto building to a jazzed-out conclusion EWF mostly keeps the rhetoric in check focusing instead on assertive rockers that give everyone in this nine-member unit a chance to flex his muscles There is less cosmic emphasis but the EWF formula—heavy on the richly textured vocals horns and rhythm—is still intact And surprisingly still fresh —CONNIE JOHNSON On 3ERRYGIIRCIA 7:30 and 10:30 PM ALL SEATS $1450 CHfikil HAM 7:30 PM d Stir Nil?
