brewing Sonata But in the first movement it proved destructive as well as energizing From the aggressive crunch of the first chord it was clear that suavity would have to be earned By the end of the movement Stern had elegance yoked with brilliance The variations brought searching simplicity to the fore and the Presto scampered home with wit and zest Though exasperating to watch with his affected bobbing and swaying pianist Andrew Wolf provided sympathetic support at every turn Except that is for the climactic moments in the outer Beethoven movements where heavy foot stomping reduced his accompaniment to percussion But when things got which with Stern was very soft Wolf gauged each note perfectly The rest of the program emphasized lyricism Partnership in a delicately Romanticized
