Philadelphia-born Dietz had staged a production of Wendy Wasserstein's "Uncommon Women and Others" at the small Callboard Theater in December 1979 Good reviews made her want to move it to a mid-size house None was to be had A subsequent job at the Los Angeles Theater Alliance reinforced her conviction that "the shortage of mid-size houses was keeping LA theater from developing" So with husband Lenny Beer a successful radio record and video producer Dietz created a nonprofit theater corporation and went in search of space "Supermarkets old movie theaters anything" Dietz said "Then 'Vincent' opened at the Las Palmas (February 1981) I had done publicity for 'Festival' there in my first professional job in I remembered what a gorgeous house it was "There had always been a lot of discussion about why no one could make a go of that theater and my feeling was that somebody had to come in and say 'This is who we are' People had to get used to associating coming there with a certain type of experience" When "Vincent" closed Dietz asked the landlord if he wanted a long-term tenant and with a start-up fund of $150000 created the LA Stage Co In April 1981 she restaged "Uncommon Women" for $100000 but the chemistry wasn't quite there and the show lost Please see DIETZ Page 2 By DAVID CROOK Times Staff Writer HOUSTON-- Four major league baseball teams a handful of other professional sports organizations and one of the nation's leading cable TV programming companies announced plans here Sunday to launch a national cable pay-sports network later this year Officials of the Chicago White Sox Detroit Tigers Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle SuperSonics unveiled plans for The Sports Network at an opening-day press conference of the 32nd annual convention of the National Cable Television Assn at the Astrohall convention complex Distribution of the new pay-sports service is to be handled by Group (Westinghouse) Satellite Communications the Stamford Conn-based subsidiary of Westinghouse Electric Co that already distributes the Satellite News Channel and Nashville Network cable services Westinghouse hopes to deliver as many as 500 sporting events a year over the new channel charging subscribers $12 to $15 a month according to Lloyd Werner Group W's senior vice president for sales and marketing The new channel will rely on a sophisticated satellite hook-up of regional pay-TV sports services already operating in the four cities Joining the baseball teams in the proposed network are the Chicago Black Hawks (hockey) Chicago By SYLVIE DRAKE Times Staff Writer Nme years ago Susan Dietz was teaching junior high school English at Studio City's Harvard School for boys Among her duties was staging the annual school play She calls the experience "the best training I did 14 shows in four publicity sets production direction" But in fact it was only one step along a circuitous path that has led Dietz 36 bearer of a PhD in English dramatic literature to become the artistic director of the LA Stage Co and LA Stage Co West two mid-size legitimate theaters in Hollywood and Beverly Hills that are defying the odds They are in the case of the fledgling LA Stage Co West hoping box-office receipts Currently "Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You" is into its eighth month (and third leading lady in the 377-seat LA Stage Co in Hollywood "Cloud Nine" a more unusual piece playing at the 348- seat Beverly Hills branch the former Solari Theatre) is just finding its audience and Dietz says "hoping to run forever" What makes her success astonishing is the slim chance either project had of making it Chalk it up to Dietz's natural smarts and boundless energy "If you have a problem give it to Susie" says a nephew who's invested in her shows "She'll love solving it" "That's how the LA Stage Co got put we tried to move 'Uncommon Women' and couldn't" Dietz said on a recent FILM CLIPS CORMAN NAMES HIS NEW BABY By DEBORAH CAULFIELD Times Staff Writer
