Director John Ford saw him in the role and brought him to Los Angeles for the film "Up the River." The rest became me Hollywood legend. But four years before that break arrived, the Tracys' private lives had undergone a fundamental change. It had happened one morning: "I went to our crib," Mrs.

Tracy recalled years later. "It was time to waken him. "Johnny. Johnny! It's time to wake I said. "He didn't move.

"Johnny 'I stopped suddenly. I cannot say what prompted me. Scarcely conscious that I did so, I stood motionless beside his crib. I called his name again- -and then I shouted it. He slept on." "And so I discovered that our baby was deaf." She consulted a leading otologist, who told her the child would never learn to talk, but she could not accept the advice to "wait- -in a few years he'll be old enough for a state school." "But we went right on talking to Johnny, singing to him, telling him nursery rhymes even though we knew he heard nothing we said -and as it turned out, that was just the right thing to do." When the boy was 21 months old, a New York specialist confirmed their ideas, saying, "Your child can learn to lip read.

He can learn to talk. He can do almost anything a hearing child can do- -but. you must talk, talk, talk to him." The specialist was right. Even a subsequent bout with polio failed to halt her son's progress; he was graduated from junior college and the Choinard Art Institute and continued to lead a relatively normal life. And his mother decided to share the things she had learned with Funeral Directors Hillside MORTUARY one call MEMORIAL.

In 1942, with the aid of other mothers of deaf children, she founded the John Tracy Clinic- -and spent the next three decades of her life making it the world's largest educational center for parents and their preschool deaf children.

Financed entirely by her husband during its early years, the clinic later attracted major support from social and philanthropic agencies. This year its director estimated that the clinic has provided services to more than 60,000 youngsters and their parents -all without cost to the recipients. Mrs. Tracy said her own contribution was mainly in the realms of lecturing would talk to any group which paid part of my and writing (two books: "New Avenues to Understanding" and "Suggestions to Parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children," and numerous articles). "She was a driving force -an inspiration," said Joan Hampstead, whose daughter learned to talk with the clinic's help. "Without her there would have been no clinic -and without her insights the program would not have been as effective. She was almost a force of nature; you felt that nothing could stop her." Not even the failure of her marriage. The rift between Spencer and Louise Tracy never led to divorce, but for decades before the actor's death in 1967 they had been living apart.

She never publicly discussed the causes of their separation, however, and according to biographer Charles Higham she shared the pain of her husband's final days with his friend, actress Katharine Hepburn. "When Tracy was ill," Higham wrote, "the two women sat beside his bed in shifts exchanging notes on the patient's progress as they passed each other in the doorway of his hospital room." Over the years, Mrs. Tracy was frequently honored for her contributions. She held honorary degrees from Northwestern University and USC, and Lake Erie, MacMurray, Gallaudet, Whit worth and Ripon colleges. She held the Medal of Honor of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Distinguished Service Award in Public Advocacy from the American Speech and Hearing the Award of Honor from the American Academy of Opthalmology, and National Woman of the Year award of International Orphans Inc.

She was second vice president of the Alexander Graham Bell Assn. for the Deaf a member of the National Advisory Council on Vocational Rehabilitation and the Neurological and Sensory Disease Service Advisory Committee; the National Advisory Board of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and the President's Task Force on the Physically Handicapped. She retired as director of the John Tracy Clinic in 1974, becoming honorary chairman- -founder. In addition to her son, she leaves a daughter, Louise (Susie) Tracy, two grandchildren and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday in All Saints Episcopal Church, Beverly Hills. "No one who knew her will forget her," said her former fund-raising associate, Helena Jennings Stack. "Strength and love like hers goes on. It can never die.".
