shell-shocked for the start of Soighwest Conference play next week against Arkansas The big smooth Huskers took advantage of Homed Frog mistakes fumbles and interceptions for a 28-7 halftime lead and then settled down to your basic physical mugging technique to add 28 more points in the last 30 minutes They turned loose an army of big running backs and all of them Tony Davis Monte Anthony John O'Leary Dave Gillespie proved tough for the Frogs to handle In fact the TCU defenders never really stopped them for long and when they did quarterback Terry Luck usual!) had another ace up his sleeve Nebraska piled up 517 yards most of it in the second half In the first half they didn't need big drives going 46 46 10 and five yards for their first four scores UNABLE TO mount a consistent attack against the bigger powerful Husker line the Frogs' only serious weapon was the pass Lee Cook and Jim Elmer each completed six tosses totaling 153 yards and getting one TD In fact what the Purples did best was run back intercepted passes Dennis McGehee treeked 75 yards third longest in TCU history with one and freshman Darryl Lowe of Aledo went 70 yards for a touchdown with another Even so the Huskers not known for their passing collected four ID passes a couple of them when the Frog defense stiffened near the goal against the pounding rushing attack On the TCU side Mike Renfro had another impressive day catching four for 83 GOING NOWHERE TCU right guard Mark Krug right (75) is frustrated by Cornhusker Mike Fultz Jr (72) as TCU running back Gerry Modzelewski (33) is a tackled by an unidentified Nebraska defeated TCU 56-14 in the game Saturday tink Ants 0 'I iders i 5644' a 28-yard gain to the Nebraska 31 Vernon Wells made a fine sideline catch for a first at the 21 and then Elmer pegged to Renfro at the goal line The lithe sophomore made a leaping grab and came down on the intersection of the goal line and the sideline An official when he saw Renfro had held on to the ball ruled touchdown Rick lsel's kick pulled the Frogs closer at 14-7 with 11:28 left in the half TCU ALSO stopped the Huskers cold on Nebraska's next possession but then the germlins struck hard at the Frogs On the TCU 12 Elmer fumbled a snap to Nebraska's Mike Fultz Two plays later Luck threw to Brad Jenkins for the TD On TCU's first play after the Huskers kicked off with a 21-7 lead Elmer was clobbered as he attempted a pass and the ball fluttered into Pi llon's wailing hands at the Frog 32 Ile returned it to the five and Craig needed only one play to score around the right end The Nebraska advantage had gone from 14-7 to 28-7 while only 21 seconds clicked off the clock The Frogs recovered a little poise the rest of the half stopping Nebraska on downs at the TCU 24 Robert Dobry chased Luck out of bounds on a fourth down rollout pass recovering a fumble at the TCU 25 on a Husker drive in the final minute In the second half the Huskers just turned loose the power- and overwhelmed the frogs They took the third quarter kickoff and marched 80 yards gnawing huge chunks out of the Frog interior defense and using a 38-yard interference penalty to reach the TCU eight Then Luck hit Chuck Malito for the score McGEHEE then gave the Frogs a golden opportunity with his long interception runback to the Husker six but they couldn't Turn to Interception on Page 4 Texas Sloan's SWC debut ruined I By JIM TRI KLE StarTelegram Writer AUSTIN It was almost awesome the way Texas opened its Southwest Conference program Saturday night To ill-starred Texas Tech that was putting it mildly The Red Raiders with new coach Steve Sloan campaigning for his first league victory were smeared by the Orange 42-18 in front of a packed 1lemorial Stadium gallery It was a horse of another color in other ways too Tech's equine mascot Happy Five was so badly smeared with orange paint in its stall Friday night that he was rendered hors de combat for the game The Raiders needed all the good luck pieces they could muster as it turned out and Happy Five wasn't among them BEFORE TIIE GAME'S end marking Darrell Royal's 100th SIVC triumph the Longhorn bench had been cleared and Bevo was even bawling for a little action That's Texas' mascot and he was in his natural color Marty Akins directed the 'Horns smartly in the penalty-filled game that lasted more than three hours Before surrendering his quarterback post to Ted Costanzo in the last period Akins had run 114 yards connected on seven of 10 passes and had spurred the 'Horns well out of the Raiders' range He scored one touchdown from six Turn to Longhorns on Page 2 How Top Ten teams fared Here's how the nation's Top Ten football teams fared in weekend play: 1 OKLAHOMA squeezed past Miami Fla 20-17 Friday night 2 aching to rise above their current No 4 rating NEBRASKA'S 28-7 halftime kad could have been greater or with fewer bobbles by the Frogs much less Actually TCU started out moving the ball with a march from its 21 to the 49 before the first fumbled snap from center halted it The Huskers took over at the TCU 46 and plugged right on in for a score using O'Leary's running and a 21-yard pass from Luck to Craig to reach the 10 before O'Leary gained the 3 and Anthony took it in They mounted another 46-yard drive moments later after a Frog punt again with O'Leary and Davis carrying the lead before Luck rolled out to his right and pegged to Davis alone in the end zone Their 14-0 lead lasted into the second period until Elzner came in for the Frogs at the TCU 40 He found Renfro crossing for gruesome picture was of Mack trucks running over beer cans "They kept coming in with third-team linemen" observed Shipman "and when that happens you know somebody is getting tired I'm sure they did not being used to the heat" Shipman had such tight control of the Aggie wishbone that he turned a fumble into a 45-yard pass completion an artistic ad-lib that led to another big play a 50-yard field goal by Fort Worth freshman Tony Franklin "Boy a play like that on television" Shipman giggled later "Well maybe they got a little excitement out of it" The Illini got nothing of it than a frustrating migraine headache As Shipman rolled out the ball flew out of his hands But it popped back in his grasp and he launched a push shot down field to an open Skip Walker Franklin's long shot gave the Ags a 9-0 lead IT WAS PINNED on a 51-yard touchdown drive on the Aggies' first series In the second period Shipman showed what he could do with a straight-act passing play He hit Mike Floyd with a 4I-yard pass at the Illinois 45 and followed that with a 14- yard touchdown strike to Richard Osborne propping up the Aggies with a 23-0 halftime lead In the midst of this the Illini had gained a mere four
