Canon Beanlandi, rector of Christ church, Victoria, has finally decided to accept the position of secretary to the S.P.C.K., and will not return to British Columbia. Mrs. Beanlands will join her husband, who is now in England, shortly. The salmon run in the Fraser river continues satisfactory and the oolachana have greatly increased in numbers during the last few days. Large orders have been received for the latter, but the fish dealers find it hard to till them.

The temporary strike of the mechanics in the employ of D. McGillivray Co. on the Lulu Island Steel Works was the shortest on record, only lasting from 12 noon till evening, when all the difficulties, the result of a misunderstanding, were adjusted. There was a full attendance at the meeting of the school teachers at the Central school last evening. The subject discussed was the principles and practice of the analy sis of sentences, and many good points of interest to the teachers were brought out.

Saturday, May 7th, will be the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Puget Sound, and our good neighbors across the border are preparing to celebrate the centennial in a becoming manner. It was in 17U2 that George Vancouver, th) English navigator, discovered the Sound waters.

Some British subjects had settled in Nootka, a point north of Victoria, and having quarrelled with the Spanish officers, Vaucouver and a small squadron was commissioned to go thither and receive a surrender of Nootka, under orders from the Count of Madrid to the Spanish commandant. He set out in April, 1791, and a year later succeeded in accein pushing his mission. Ihe bound was named after an officer in the expedition named Puget. The anniversary ceremonies will be on an elaborate scale, and tbe waters about Port Townsend will be dotted with vessels of every description. The United States war vessels York town, Adams, Mohican, as well as the Nipsic, which now stationed at Port Orchard, will be in the fleet to add tribute to the occasion.

A Pleasing Entertainment. The lecture room of St. Andrew's church was well tilled last evening with an appreciative audi' ence, all of whom were delighted with the manner in which the bhakespenan reading, As You Like It, was presented. Notes from Nelson. The sale of Government lots was held at Nelson on Wednesday, by Joshua the well known Victoria auctioneer. Fifty nine lots were sold, realizing $31,410, the principal buyers being H. hlous, K. G.

Tatlow, J. F. Hume, the Earl of Dysart, per Lionel H. Webber, R. J.

Brealey and Arthur Hoggins. One hundred and fifty passengers arrived by tbe steamers Columbia and Lytton on their first voyage via Revelstoke. There is much snow on the mountains, the season being very late. Five hundred men are at Slocan and are en route via the Slocan river, the favorite route. The C.

P. R. sale of lots is announced for May 2nd. The new crosscut in the Silver King tun' nel is reported in ore, and the Dandy mine never looked better. At Doxen, new strikes have already been made on Slocan lake, the ore assaying from 5I0O to a ton.

Joan Is Her Name The new steamer built at Victoria for the E. N. Railway Company was launched at 4 o'clock last evening in the presence of an immense crowd. The christening ceremony was performed by Miss Maude Dunsmuir and as the vessel glided down the ways a flag was run up to the mast head with the name Joan, the Christian name of Mrs. Robert Dunsmvir, upon it.

Tbe launching was a decided success, and everything went as smoothly as possible. The new steamer was decorated with flags and presented a pretty appearance when she slipped into tbe water and rested on its surface. A Distinguished Visitor. Among the arrivals by the Islander this morning were Charles William Eliot, LL.D., and wife. Mr Eliot is President ofHarvard University, Cambridge, and his reputation in literary and scientific circles is world wide.

He has been traveling for Borne weeks and at Tacoma, Seattle and other points was banqueted by Harvard clubs. To President Eliot the United States owes much for the improvemement made in the last 25 years in the public school system and in the cause of education generally. President and Mrs. Eliot went east this afternoon over the C. P.

11. Another Fine mock. The St. Charles hotel, on the corner of Pender and Seymour streets, which was partially destroyed some months ago, will shortly be rebuilt. The old frame building will be replaced by a handsome three storey brick hotel.

Plans of the proposed new block may now be seen in the office of Messrs. Wulffsohn Bewicke, Cordova Btreet, agents for the owner, Lord Queens berry. Anyone desiring to acquire a lease of this property when completed would do well to call on Messrs. Wulffsohn Bewicke, as they are prepared to have the plans of the hotel, if necessary, modified to suit the wishes of the lessee. Dominion Day.

Mayor Cope is anxious to get suggestions as to how Dominion Day can best be celebrated. What is wanted is something original and attractive. The old line of sports are very well in their way but Vancouver wants something new, and the nov elty must have merit. Anyone who produces a brilliant idea in this connection will earn the heartfelt thanks of the citizens, and will have his name handed down to posterity as that of public benefactor. Do not all speak at once A Break In the Main.

Another break in the old main was the cause for the water being shut off on Thurs day evening, resulting in no small amount of inconvenience to hotels and restaurants, and to users of water motors. As soon as possible the broken main was cut out, and the city is now being supplied entirely through the new one. Diver Llewellyn will go down at low tide this afternoon, and make an examination. C. T. U. Rescue Home in Victoria, has left that institution, evidently preferring a life of sin to one of right living. The man who is responsible for this girl's undoing has much to answer for.

It is said that the wretchea who kept her hero are responsible for her departure from the Home and that she will return to this city. Clillllwack Real Estate Rale. Having arranged with C. Empress of China left there on Tuesday morning the 20tb inst, A communication from Frank Foubert, of the Arlington, in reply to Ihomas Tompkins, was received too late for publication to day and will appear to morrow. She also brought down a considerable quantity of freight The New Westminster and Burrard Inlet Telephone Company are laying a cable across tbe Fraser river to connect their line to Steveston, the present connection over the bridges not being quite satisfactory.

The business of the Steveston line is steadily improving, necessitating a reliable connec tion being made. Tbe Orangemen of the Province will unite in a grand celebration in ancouvcr on July 12th, and already preparations are being made for the occasion. New Westminster lodge, No. 1593, has sent all the way to Belfast for a splendid silken banner which they will sport on that occasion. This will be the the tirst banner from the ould sod in the Province.
