looks just as strong Due in at the 500-seat former spaghetti house next month are Mickey Gilley Cal Smith and Gary Stewart The Feed Mill as its name indicates is a departure from the usual country first of its kind anywhere first Aunt for Golum i a the long-awaited "Red Headed Stranger" has been released and is doing quite well (admittedly there was little doubt that it would be successful considering the growing cadre of Nelson fans) Recorded in -Garland at the Autumn Sound Studios "Red Headed Stranger" is doubly interesting from the standpoint that Nelson used the members of his band the Record Men as backup musi clans rather than the usual session players Mainly that means that guitarist Jody Payne harmonica player Mickey Raphield drummer Paul English bass player Bill Spears and pianist Bobbie Nelson get to show their stuff Miss Nelson Willie's sister is particularly good on the in strumental "Bandera" while Raphael shines on "Hands on the Wheel" a song written by Billy Callery and probably the best on the album Nelson is at his best on songs such as "Blue Eyes Cryin1 in the Rain" "Denver" and "Can I Sleep in Your Arms" the Hank Cochran "Red River Valley" tune popularized a couple of years ago by Jeannie Seeley Oddly none of the songs on the album are of the footstompin' wild-shoutin' kind so popular with Nelson's "progressive country" followers Instead there's an aura of quiet intensity about all the selections In a way it's the Nelson of several years and that's tops ROUND: The Earth County Sheriff's Posse will present a fund-raising show at 8 pm 4th and 5th Streets was purchased for $200 by what is now the oldest church in Fort Worth Later "desiring to get out of the congestion of downtown" the church sold the property and building it had erected on it for $5000 and purchased property at the corner of 6th and Throclunorton Streets for $1500 The congregation found however there was no escaping downtown and now its members take pride in being located in the heart of Fort Worth's business district and in their landmark facilities today valued at a minimum of $2 million The 1870 date was not the birth date of the church In June 1855 120 years ago this month 10 persons met in a home for the purpose of worship and a farmhand by the name of A Dean preached to them THE CONGREGATION met in various homes until it built its first concrete-log building at the corner of Belknap and Lamar Streets On the present imposing building still at 6th and Throckmorton is a Texas historical marker which reads: FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF FORT WORTH "City's pioneer congregation Organized by the Rev A Dean who with hymn book and revolver came in 1855 to the riotous six-yearold hamlet on the Trinity He held services (at present Belknap and Houston Streets) in a log house built for Post Surgeon 2nd Dragoons Army stationed at fort that gave city its name "Charter members were: Mr and Mrs James Allen Mr and Mrs Benjamin Ayres Mrs Francis Durrett Mrs Alfred Johnson Mrs Florence Peak Mr and Mrs William A Sanderson and Stephen Terry First regular meeting place a one-story concrete house at present Belknap and Lamar was used on weekdays by Col John Peter Smith (member of congregation) for sessions of the first public school established in Fort Worth 4 4 "REV MR DEAN a frontier farmer was followed as pastor by Dr Hall a dentist and by Dr Mansell Mathews physician and judge of Red River County' and head of a large family grazing cattle in this area "Confederate General Gano of Grapevine after SERIES DR ORVAL HOLT senior minister the Civil War preached regularly at this church In later 1860s came the Rev Joseph Clark and sons Addison and Randolph who in 1873 founded Add-Ran College forerunner of Texas Christian University "First Christian is the oldest church in Fort Worth" Of the church's long line of pastors Dr Anderson had the longest tenure more than 49 years He was succeeded at his death in 1961 by the late Dr Quentin Grey Dr Orval Holt present senior minister explains how a church located in the heart of downtown fulfills its ministry "People come from all parts of the city for study and worship" he said "Obviously the church has a ministry to each of them where they live and work But the focus of ministry of First Christian Church at 6th and Throckmorton is on a ministry to the downtown area "MOST OF THE important decisions that affect the quality of life in Fort Worth and Tarrant County are made within a four to six block radius of the church building First Christian sees itself as a 'presence' in the midst of the city to help all people make the kinds of decisions that contribute to humanizing forces within the city "In order to accomplish this kind of ministry" Dr Holt said "First Christian hopes to become a center for 'through the week' activities for those who work downtown A day care center for children of downtown workers a senior citizens center noontime lunch and learn classes free noon concerts and art displays and a pastoral counseling center are among the things planned to begin this fall" These programs Dr Holt said will be in addition to the already existing program of ministry such as Church School classes for all ages worship services outstanding music fellowship dinners youth fellowship women's fellowship a recreation program in gym and swimming pool Dr Holt a native of Quanah holds BA MA BD and honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees from Phillips University in Enid Okla He formerly served the First Christian Churches in Durant Chickasha and
