Not much has been heard lately about the projected cable from this city to Australia, but it does not follow that the idea has been lost sight of. The events of this year seem destined to specially bring it again to notice and Jubilee year would Ik a good year to start ork on it. The scheme has been brought before the notice of the public in a variety of ways. As far back as lssO Mr.

Sanford Fleming wrote a pap tr on the subject, in which lie estimated the cost of cable connection between Australia and F.nglund by way of Canada ut and proposed its construt tion under a subsidy of AllOn.ooi) per annum, half to be contributed by Ureal llritain, and half by the interested colonies in varying proportions, in the following yiar the question came up at the Imperial Con I fereltce held in London, when several suggestions wile received and the subject was gone into very luliy. A number of gentlemen representing various telegraph interests made propositions for the construction if the line, while Jlr. Sanford ioining urged the view which he has cms, stoutly maintained, namely, that if it was to be iitiilt at all, it should be done by the ilovt rnnionls of the counirns to he served by it. The londuii Conference passed a re Soltltioin to tile i tied "th.lt the connection of Canada with Australasia, by direct submarine telegraph across the Pacitie, is a project of high importance to tin Kmpii'e, and every doubt as to its practicability should, without delay, in set at rest by a thorough and exhaustive survey." It. cannot, be said that this resolution I.

to any Very active effort in the direction indicated by it. Some surveys were made by a Pritish Vessel I the Kgeria between Fiji and Australia, but the ocean bed between Honolulu and Vancouver was left unexplored. A number nf other conferences were held in Australia and New Zealand, including a postal conference at Sydney, at Which the project was favorably discussed, and the merits of the different routes debated. The next really important step taken in the matter, however, was the calling of the Inter colonial Conference, which met in Ot tawa in June, iy.H, where it was once more taken up, occupying, in fact, more of the time of the delegates than uny other one subject. On this occasion a number of resolutions affecting the cable were passed.

One endorsed the desirability of its construction as a Joint national and public work; another requested the Imperial (jovernment to undertake a survey of the proposed route, at the mutual expense of Jreat Hritain, Canada and the Australasian colonies; a third advocated the extension of the cable from Australasia to the Cape of Good Hope; and a fourth related to the securing of neutral ground for a landing on some one of the Hawaiian Islands. The task of promoting the new enterprise was entrusted to the Canadian Government. The efforts of the Dominion to further the project resulted in the calling of Pacific Cable Conference, which convened in London in June of last year. Through a variety of causes, however, the business sessions of the delegates did not begin until November, when, under the presidency of the Karl of Selborne, the discussion was again resumed. On this occasion the Canadian delegates were Hon.

A. G. Jones and Sir Donald A. Smith, ho were ac cornianied by Mr. Sanford Fleming.

As at previous conferences, the deliberations of the commissioners took place in secret, and pending the reinirt of the delegates, which has not yet been made, there can be nothing more than surmise concerning the result of the meeting. It is likely, linwever, that this report will ere long be made, and there is a reasonable possibility that it will contain suggestions which may bring the cable question within the domain of practical enterprises. S'hould such prove to be the case, we believe the Canadian people 'Will be disposed to consider it fairly, not only as a possible source of benefit to the trade of the Dominion, but in its aspect as an undertaking of Imperial importance. This is a year of great things for the British people, and Canadians will not be less open than their brothers to a full and frank discussion of any question in which the interests of the Empire are involved. Edward Joniwon and John Black, who were captured with Jewelry stolen from Cballoner Mitchell's store at Koeidland, entered a idea of not guilty when arraigned before Judge Wallace at San Francisco, charged with bringing stolen property into the Tinted States. C'ounnel for the prisoners offered plua of former jeopardy and prior acquittal before Judge Cook and deniajidt separate jury trials on tbte pleais.

Judge Wallace denied tinis application, holding that the sutliciency of the plea. a matter of law wfliich he must determine from an inspection of the record in Judge Cook's court. The Judgv stated that he would make such an inspection, and then continued further hearing until r.n xt FrMay. It will be remembered that lYovincial Police Hussey gave up the attempt to have these fellows extradited when It became understood tout they would be prosecuted on the above charee. The hearing of the motion, for judgment in the case of Oordon vs. the city of Victoria was finished on Saturday at Victoria before the Chief Justice Tj.v evidence as to what by laws the city had made with reference to the l'oint Ellice bridge.

Mr. Linlley Crvase. acting; for plaintiff, produced a by law pafied in 1S12 to raise money for the purpose of roads and bridges. To this Mr. lUssidy, acting for the city, otij, cted that it was not shown that the by law had been voted on.
