Inn in Vienna, Jan. 9. A wild rumor is circulated in regard to the alleged poisoning of the late Khedive. It is not believed here to be founded upon any very firm basis of fact. It is admitted that the ignorance of the native doctor may have indirectly brought about the Khedive's death, but that is about all there is in the affair.

Prince Abbas is now on his way to Kgypt. It is not know whether the alarming rumor has been communicated to him. Another theory advanced against the poison story is that professional jealousy may have had a great deal to do with the rumor. Nearly all the European doctors in Egypt look with contempt upon the native physicians, ami are prone to tax them with a greater amount of ignorance than they really possess. Heath Itaclng.

Paris, Jan. 9. Six hundred families I Di nyn, Department of the North, are af Ilicted with influenza. At Montpellier there has been an alarming increase in the mor tality due to la grippe. An alleged boodling conspiracy has been discovered at Toronto.

Col. Alexander, who has tendered for the reclamation of the Ashbridge Ray lauds, says that an Alderman and a newspaper are mixed up in an attempt to extort money from him. He further stated he had a letter in his pocket in which an oiler was made to get his ten i der through the Council, which meets for the last time next Monday, for 10.0(10. The committee will investigate the matter. The month of December last year was the third warmest December in Ontario to lie found among the half century records of the observatory.

i As the work of clearing up the civic accounts for the year proceeds the accuracy of Mayor Oppenhoimcr's judgment is impressed more ami more upon tlie electors. In an other column is shown how he was induced to bring in an estimnte of receipts and ex peiidituros for the year, and the ap I peuded table will show that he knew what he was talking about. Some slight changes may be made in the figures, but they will be very slight indeed. The table appended does not show the debenture balance, which amounts to but it allows that the Mayor's head is level on finance: yytinxtti'l 1 t'li' pnC'l Esli'lt. Appro'n.

From all that has been learned to day it ia believed that the majority of the Alder manic candidates will not sign the Labor Council's manifesto. One of them said to a Woiu.ii reporter this afternoon that he would object for one thing to the doing of new street work by day labor.

Another said he would not go to the Council ith his hands tied in any way. In his estimation, a very large num her of working men did not favor the plat i form in its entirety, even though it was given nut under the seal of the Trades and Labor Council. A I'l ofc sslona! Opinion. Dr. Carroll says that he doesn't remember having heard Mendelssohn play but he has read Henry McGlynn on Seeing Hack wards and George licllaniy on Progressive Poverty, according to lloyle, and therefore knows all about and is in favor of the single tax.

He says that he has always been in favor of it, and would urge its being put in force aa regards bachelors at once. It is said that J. C. Hansen has been seen in one of the Sound cities. His business was all right, but he owes borrowed money to a largo number of persons in the city.

The semi annual will be issued in Rath bone Lodge K. of P. this evening. There is also other important business to be transacted. Turn out and see how the new officers conduct themselves.

A correspondent in yesterday's Culuui 'o'ti, signing himself "A Real Reformer," nominates John irant, late Mayor of Victoria, for the next Lieutenant Governor of liritish Columbia. The Greer ease will probably come beforo the Court of Crown Cases reserved, or the Supreme Court of liritish Columbia, next week. The points in favor of a new trial will then be argued. The Gov. has been pleased to remove the sentence of dealh passed ou 1 Emia, an Indian convicted at the last West minster Assizes, as he considers the evi deuce was not sullicient to warrant such a conviction.

Tlie Itooiller's Trials The On l.ady Macdonald. Ottawa, Jan. 9. The Chignecto Marine railroad practically received its death blow, the Government having refused to grant financial aid, or pay over any of the subsidy, until the line Jia completed, the condition on hich Parliament voted the subsidy. The (llnlif's attack on Lady Macdonald, in connection with the Kegina towusite dispute, is strongly condemned.

Hon. Mr. Dewduey says it is brutal. '1 he Alberta Railroad Company is again seeking a charter to build a line through the Crow's Nest 1'ass, to a point on the liue of the Canadian Pacific. The revised voters' lists for Cariboo, Vancouver and Victoria, have been received here.

At present, when everyone is talking about qualifications, the following extract from the city's charter may be read with interest.

If there is any question as to a candidate's qualification it ill be a good rule to apply. It reads No person shall be qualified to be elected Mayor or Alderman unless such person is a resident within the city or within two miles thereof, and is a natural born or naturalized subject of Her Majesty, and a male of the full age of 21 years, and is not disqualified under this act, and has been for one month next preceding the day of nomination, a registered ow ner in fee simple in the Laud Registry oilice, of real property within the city limits, of the assessed value over and above all charges, liens, and incumbrances allecting the same of 30(1, all of which shall be in the ward for which he is nominated; or a leaseholder of property for the term of three years of the assessed value of 3,000, and the whole of hich must be held and rated in the ward for hich such alderman is a candidate, and lease must extend over the whole term of his oilice. lie in oust rat Ion Kxlraordinary. Dr. Carroll's friends are making arrangements for a grand torchlight procession and promenade band concert in case he is elected, It was suggested that the doctor head the procession in his carriage, but he demurred on the ground that it would be too much like a funeral.

One of the boys in the committee room said it might be a funeral, but he was promptly sat on. Under the new arrangements Rosa Vucen will head the procession with a banner bearing the inscription: Sick Sendfer Carrollibus. The music will be provided by Scoullar's gas pipe band, under the spiritual direction of Messrs. Mendelssohn and ISoethoven. lolm Draws. The largest audience that has ever been inside the Vancouver Opera House assembled to see John L. Sullivan ill Honest Hearts and Willing Hands, on Friday evening. Duncan 11. Harrison, F.sther Lyons and Geo.

Rryant, who was a favorite here with the Imperial Stock Company, did good work. Sullivan is not an actor, but he appeared to better advantage because the part was built to lit him, instead of his being required to fit it. What ho was called on to do was to represent a blacksmith and the boss slugger of the village. An effort was made to get him to come out and make a speech, but remembering his experience in 'Frisco he refrained from indulging. A quotation from hia speech in San Francisco fits here admirably "I know I ain't no actor, but I gets do money just de same.

See!" The audience, hilst the hirgest ever gathered in a building in Vancouver, was also orderly. North Vancouver. A meeting of the electors of the above municipality was held in II. M. llirschberg's oilice yesterday afternoon, J.

Those who tirst went down the hoisting shaft after the explosion describe the scene as terribly revolting, legs, arms and headless bodies lying in a mass at the bottom of the shaft and scattered all over the various approaches. Twenty four bodies were found at that point, but only six of them could be identified. Six small boys, names unknown, tending fans, were killed outright and found dead at their posts. It has been learned the explosion was caused by Geo. Lowery exploring what is known as a window shot." At a late hour last night it was estimated that the number of missing would reach a total of Mil, based on the following figures About 4U0 men were in the mine at the time of the explosion.

Forty eight dead bodies have been recovered. The names of 118 men slightly anil seriously injured are known, and about 30 men escaped without injury. Al.LKIl TO TIIK SI KN Atoka, I.T., Jan. 9. On the Horns of a DiU'iinoa on the Assessment Ouestfim.

Ir. Carroll put his foot into it badly when he appealed against the assessed values placed upon his unimproved proper i ties in the east end of the city. It is re markable that the Doctor should appeal, considering the tact that he was a member of the Finance Committee of last year, and was thereby largely instrumental in raising the values of properties. Til Would is in a position to state that when the Assessment Commissioners submitted their lirst report, the Finance Committee sent the report back with instructions to the eiled that the values must be advanced by a considerable amount. The committee's instructions in this respect were imperative.

The Doctor never opened his mouth 1 in the Council as to the man ner in which the assessment was to be levied. Those who have the taxes to pay on the enhanced assessment aver that I they are in many instances higher than the market value or the prices at which they I would be willing to sell. Were the Ahler men in a better position to arrive at the i real assessable value of the city properties than the Commissioners If not, what right had they to order the advance over the Commissioners first and honest assessment? There are tw causes which could have actuated Dr. Carroll in this matter, lie was either conscious of the ell'ect of the committee's action, and was dishonest enough to say nothing about it, or he did not know the etlect of the committee's instructions, and was consequently unlit for his position of trust. T. In order to meet the universal wish of the employees of the tramway, arrangements have been made by the company to allow them to attend the funeral on Monday in a body. It is likely that many from lu re will also go over to attend the last sad rites. Tlie Iturke ami Hare Murders. Edinburgh, Jan. The recent death of Dr.

Wharton Jones, in Kugland, removes still another of those ho were personally associated with the Hurke and Hare murders. In 1827 1 r. Jones was an assistant to Sir William Ferguson, of Kdinburgh. In that year an old pensioner died in the house nf a man named Hare, owing him i'4 for board and lodging. At Hare's instance a man named Kurke sold tlie body for dissection, receiving i'T 10s.

Then Hare anil liurke committed a shocking series of murders for ths sake of dirposing of the bodies. They were found out, and the physicians were suspected. The London Lancet reproduces part of confession, declaring that the doctors had neither encouraged nor taught him to murder any person. Mr. Ferguson was the only man that ever mentioned anything about the bodies.
