AND 'BAMA ALWAYS NEXT SATURDAY TUSCALOOSA Ala I used to think Bear Bryant was merely a legendary figure Then a couple of years ago I found out he was some sort of deity the god-king of all football coaches When Gene Stallings a fiercely loyal Bryant subject was at he was quoted in a piece here as saying Bryant always did it thisaway It was a slanderous mistake as if a cussword had been thrown at his wife in my own house even within my own Stallings said later never refer to him as Never always COACII In Birmingham Tuscaloosa Sylacauga and Fairhope though he is or Bay-uh he says gonna retire in maybe one two said a coffee shop propietor in Birmingham the other day dunno he just seems to go on and on People talk about him maybe running for the legislature even for governor someday be funny him something other than a nothing really counts to me but the next Bryant said always that way I just think well if I lose I can always go back to STILL A HUNGER FOR COACHING AND SWEATING Whether the But I know good and well sometimes they believe SUDDEN DEPARTURE ANGERED TEXAS AGGIES Bryant is as revered in Alabama as he is detested in some parts of Texas Songs about him have been composed and sung on the radio (example: a Long Long Way from Moro When Bryant announced on Thanksgiving Day 1957 that he was leaving and home to Aggies were incensed The school president reportedly walked into the athletic department and ordered name never to be used there again in correspondence news releases or conversation Ilis last two seasons at he was 17-3-1 But win or lose always ready for next
