So touch has already been said about the new town ot Vernon by others that 1 need ma enter into any details, but merely add i a few general remarks and leave the rest for a future letter. Four good large hotels are now open to the public, and another is in course of construction. The Victoria House, the oldest in town, does a large business, and as Mr. Trou oii, the propri i etor, is an old timer and well and favorably known all ovtr the Province, he controls most of the farm and miners' trade. He also owns a large stock ranche lietween the town and the lake.

The Vernon House, at the west side, is also a Urge, well con ducted hotel, and owing to the rapid growth of the town and the large iiiliux of strangers and travellers the proprietor, Mr. Schubert, has been obliged to enlarge both his rooming and stabling accommodations, and still tinJs them too small for his increasing trade. This house, like the Victoria, has always done a large business, and for good; meals and comfortable rooms cannot be excelled iu any of the coast cities. The Coldstream Hotel, just lately opened, near the railroad station, may be termed the commercial house, and is tirst class iu every lespect, and will no doubt control most of the railway business when the road is opened to the public. It is managed by Mr.

11. G. Muller, latdy of Vancouver. The Okanagan House has been opened for som months in the centre of the town, aud I deen, he referring to the help she had given to Irish industries. His Lordship in re spouding stated that her ladyship would cijiial interest in encouraging home in dustrics in the country.

(Applause.) Mr. Lumbv then requested those who had exhibits of grain and cereals to permit him to a collection of them to tiie Kxpcii mciital farm at Ottawa. Mr. Maei.ay ma le a similar re I quest respecting fruit exhibits on behalf of i the Okanagan Land Development Com pany. who will exhibit the same in Vancoii ver, Victoria and other coa it cities.

In addition to the display of grain, fruit, vegetables, in the main body of the I building, the Kuderby Flour Mills had a I Hue assortment of tlotir and grain in the I room adjoining. Mr. Armstrong showed several lines of'stoves; Mr. Campbell a nice assortment of furniture; Mr. Mel law a large and complete assortment of saddles, sewing machines, organs, and Mr.

Pound, taxidermist, a case of choice stuffed birds I and animals. Outside, Mr. Marwood, of Kuderby, showed a three seated Democrat agon of his own make, which displayed excellent workmanship and completed the finishing stroke of Vernon's tirst show. I ho impression seemed to be general that since this one hail proved such a success, gotten up on such short notice, great things may be expected in the fall of 1 VJ and in future years from Vernon's agricultural and industrial show. Mesdames Dewdney, Harber andCrowell arranged the ladies' and other exhibits; Misses Donald, Graham and Castill also lent valuable assistance in arranging the general exhibits.

On the evening of Wednesday a grand ball and supper was given in the freight sheil building, under the auspices of the Coldstream Hotel, which was well attended, everything passing off in a manner satisfactory to everyone. Mr. and Mrs. H. G.

The weather was all that could be wished for; the gathering of human beings from all sections of the Province as a very lar'C one, so that the officers of the society felt more than well repaid for the and ellorts they had spent in connection with the preparations for this long to be rcmembercd event in the history of the young but prosperous town Vernon. The Society as only organized last June, hence it is tint the greatest praise due those ho worked assiduously to bring the exhibition to such a successful issue. The exhibition was one of which an older section would be proud. The display in shorthorns made by Messrs. T.

J. Steele, Hon. F. C. Vernon and Barnard Bros, was a very good one.

Mr. Steele is the pioneer breeder of shorthorns in the Interior, and everywhere the impress of his tirst import tions is still to be seen. In this division he was a heavy prize taker. In llerefords, Hon. F.

G. Vernon, O'Kecfe and L. (iirouard were the successful exhibitors. 'The llerefords are not as large in body as are the yet they are a favorite breed ith a great many. The Foiled Angus were well represented by animals from the herds of Hon.

F. G. Vernon, 1'ostill Bros, and E. J. Tronson.

This breed is getting to be a favorite one in the Interior, where it appears to flourish both as a beef pro ducer and a dairy cow. L'pnn the whole the cattle division made a tine showing, The ring was tilled with as fine specimens I of horsellesh as can be found anywhere in the Province. All the classes in this divi sion were to be seen, and the competition was close and spirited. No less than 19 prizes were carried away by roadsters, draught, general purpose and thoroughbreds. The prize list will give the names of the successful exhibitors, whose animals were really a credit to their owners.

New Westminster and Victoria alone excepted, the display made at Vernon in the horse and cattle divisions eclipsed all others, both as to numbers and quality. In hogs and sheep the display was not what it should have beeu. Poultry did not show up as ell as was expected. Mrs. A.

McDonald carried of! the tirst prize for fresh butter, a churn, given by Mr. W. J. Armstrong. The prize given by the Columbia Flouring Mills of Kuderby to ladies or bachelors for best two loaves of bread, was awarded to Mrs.

C. O'Kecfe, Miss Pringle's ba'ung getting the second prize, and Mrs. C. Pound the third. The vegetables surprised everyone.

The entries were numerous, whilst the exhibits in some cases were simply surprising as to size, general appearance and trueness to name The wheat exhibit, as might be looked for in that country, was very tine. I lie berry was plump, clear and i entirely sound. Messrs. J. A.

Cameron and Hon. F. Vernon respectively, got the tirst and second prizes given by the Columbia Flouring Mills Co. for their spring and autumn wheat. The Held produce generally was excellent.

The Okanagan Land Development Company awarded prizos for vegetables and fruit, and of the latter there was a surprisingly line display in apples, pears, plums, grapes, almonds, etc. Mr. 1'. Kllison was awarded the silver medal and Mr. C.

0 Keefe the second prize, $5. The former also was awarded the $10 given by the Fonthill nursery, for the best display of fruit. In lloral, natural history, fancy work, and millinery, there were excellent exhibits, especially so in the ladies' department, the fancy and useful work of the fair ones being one of the features of the show. Diplomas were awarded several exhibitors for the various exhibits made by them. The period for receiving compositions for an essay as mentioned in the prize list has been extended till the 1st of November.

The judges got through their work pretty well by 1 o'clock on Wednesday, shortly after which Lord and Lady Aberdeen and a i large number of visitors arrived on the grounds, having come from Sieamous, on a special train At 3 o'clock the formal opening took place. Mr. M. Luinby, president of the society, said it was expected that the lion. Mr.

Vernon would be present to perform the opening ceremony, but at the last moment he telegraphed that he was detained at Victoria by urgent business. Ho was sure no one could regret his absence more than Mr. Vernon himself. They would, however, be pleased to hear that tiie Karl of i ADerdeen had kindly consented to open the show in his absence, (Applause. The Karl of Aberdeen, on rising to speak, was cordially greeted.

Ho referred to the i regret expressed at Mr. Vernon's absence and congratulated the promoteis of the Society in making such a good showing at the first exhibition, stating that he felt sure all present appreciated the work they had done and the difficulties they had to contend with. The opening of the show was also coupled with an event of great interest to tho surrounding community the arrival of the lirst passenger train Vernon. He was happy to I have been one of the passengers, as he had determined to arrive in tune tor the show. The construction of the Nhuswap and Okanagan Railway was a sufficient guarantee of the richness of the country it opened up, and he believed that the promoters of the line would be more than justilied by its proving to be a ery paying investment.

He had a good opportunity of judging the progress made in agriculture while traveling on the 0., aud the results he had seen while staying a short time en route at Mr. Thompson's ranch, Pleasant valley, were proofs of hat could be accomplished. The Okanagan country was becoming known abroad, and from what ho had seen of it himself he hail no doubt of the success attending agriculture in the district. The latter reminded him of the loveliest parts of Scotland, He was glad that such a very creditable start had been made by the 0. IS.

Agricultural Society, an institution which would not only beuetit its present members and the district at large, but prove of great value in time to come. It afforded him much pleas nre to declare the show open. 1 Mr. Lumby then called for three cheers for Lord Aberdeen, which were heartily given; and Capt. Cummings for Lady Aber 1 "I linve been deeply interested in the invesu rrntion ofvour method of ireatnient, particularly that portion prescribed in your "lreati.se lor Men Only." cui con vinced tliat vjur treat ment for impolitic; a ml ihcay in malm in the btst kuo'irn to the mtdical profession.

No less than three driving stables are now running, while nearly every other line is already well represented. Messrs.

Tronson Brewer, two of the leading men of the town, have dissolved partnership, after being 2i years in business together. CHARI.TOX, Ass't lieu'l I'ass. Portland Or. 104 lm Northern Pacific R.Rt others, spared neither expense or effort to render this number in the Fair day's events a complete success. It was sa enjoyable affair. Refreshments were served during the evening and were of such a character as to draw praise from everyone present.

The races held on Friday and Saturday i were also a success. The Calgary horses, which had been at Victoria, were entered I for several of the races and were victors in some of the events. The winning horses were Grey Eagle, Shamrock and Jimmie, in the mile dash; Molena and llifton in the mile dash; Maggie May, Pablo, and Dude in the sjddle horse race; Shamrock, Molena, Inland, and Good Hope, in the (100 yards dash. In the mile and repeat heats, trot ting, the tirst heat was won by Bob White, Koyal Revenge and Kuderby Dick in the second heat was won by Bob White. Black Bess, Mollie May, Brownie, and Jennie, all Okanagan and Spallumcheen bred horses, won tiie mile dash in the order in which their names appear.

Other heats took place during the last day. Everything passed oil' in the most peaceable manner, redounding greatly to the credit of the large turn out present, coming from every section of that magnificent country which stretches all the way from the line of the C. P. K. south to the boundary, a veritable inland empire which will yet be a most famous district in consequence of the immense wealth it possesses in the fertility of its soil, its adaptability to industrial husbandry and other natural and yet to be developed resources.

I'ltOIMtKSSIVE VKltNON. Interesting Budget of News from OUuna jjiin and Other Districts Surrounding I Vernon. From Our Own 1 Vernon, Oct 14th. This is my fourth regular trip to Veruou in the last two years but so great have been tiie changes, so ex tensive the improvements, and so many have been the articles contributed to the various newspapers about this section of liritish Columbia, tiiat I scarcely know where to begin or what to say that will be interesting and profitable to the readers of The WoliLH, scattered ai they are far and wide throughout the habitable globe. In the past a good deal of fault finding has been done because so much of the best land has been held by a few of the old timers, to the detriment of the settlement and the Province generally but now this has been changed and there is ample room and land for market gardening and truit growing tor hundreds ot people who wish to begin operations under the most favorable circumstances.

G. G. Mac Kay, Vancouver, has lately purchased a number of the best farms in the Mission Valley for the express purpose of meeting this demand, and after a careful and systematic survey of the whole premises, he has now on the market blocks of all sizes, ranging from 10 acres to 11)0, well watered, well situated, and for climato and fertility they cannot be excelled on the continent of America. The writer has just had an iu terview with Mr. MacKay on his farm, was shown over the land, saw some of the vegetables and fruit grown this season, and can therefore speak troni personal observation, knowing well from the past that errors and exaggerations have been too frequently sent forth to the public through the columns of the various newspapers, and as a consequence people may have been deceived thereby.

For further particulars on this matter see or correspond with his manager, Mr. Munsou, Okanagan, Mis sion 1. who will cheerfully give all in formation. The new telephone line just completed by the 1'ostill Bros, on their own property, and for their own private use, is something new and far in advance of any other portion of the Province, being the first of the kind in use, though no doubt others will follow their example. Tho distance is about foni miles and connects the residences of the two brothers; it will be found a great convenience in th? absence of a daily mail, railway and telegraph communication, aud more especially as they are extensive pro ducers and dealers in horses, cattle, etc The new sawmill owned by Lemiime Gooding has been removed to the like shore, at the steamboat landing, and in about two weeks will again be running in full blast, with a capacity of from 15,000 to 20,000 feet per day, and they will lind a ready home market for all the lumber they can produce.

Captain Shorts is still monarch of the Okanagan Lake, and makes regular weekly trips with the steamer Penticton from Vernon to the Mission and Penticton twice a week, hen freight and passengers require it. The S. O. Kailway has now completed the laying of the rails over the entire road from Sicainquse to Vernon and the Lake, so that the construction train can haul ma terial from Sicainouse, on the ('. P.

11., to Okanagan Lake, and also distribute freight for Kuderby, Lansdowne aud Vernon. The passenger traffic is at present conducted by this company from Sicamouse to Knderby by a steam hand car, said tit be the third one of the kind in America. It makes daily trips each way and has accommodation for six passengers and baggage, besides carrying the mails twice a week. The stage runs from Kuderby to Vernon on Tuesdays and Saturdays and returns on Mondays and Fridays. The contractors, Messrs.
