Hartman as the alluring Barbara Darling rather than as the mistreated blind girl in A Patch bf Blue, he probably would have reacted the same because anything else would have ruined the image. Decidedly dif- ferent. however, are the reac- tions of a 19 year old boy namef Bernard Chanticleer (Peter Kast-ner) who- tries to tell himself," "Youre a Big Boy Now- in spite of his victimization by the hidden frustrations and perversions of his elders. Bernard seems contented with -his position as a roller-skating clerk at the New York Public brary. Having taken a room in the city at the bidding of his father (Rip Tom), and at the dismay of his mother (Geraldine Page), "big boy is suddenly awakened to the existence of women through Barbara Darling, a very bad actress and worse go-go dancer.

She has been a manic schizophrenic ever since her days in private school when a one-legged albino hypnothera-pisTmade amorous advances tow-ards her. Her "resulting, misanthropic sadism has Bernard in to-tal frustration gnd perplexity In IP this his first experience with the outside world. The other spectres he must con- tend with- besideshis parents range from his spinster landlady, Miss Thing. (Julie Harris), mid her misogynist pet rooster, to Policeman Francis Graf (Dolph Sweet), that sincere but inept clarion of righteousness. They, as all, are so tied up with their own sexual Inhibitions that big boy has nowhere to turn at such a difficult stage of maturation.

This rather delicate subject is handled with Subtle satiric bite which manages to make up for some obvious defects of the film. While much of the scheme is contrived, there is enough wit in the several characters to create substantial comic situations. The most well drawn characters are those of Bernards father who is obsessed with the idea that his wife is getting her lint on his rare Guttenberg Bible, and of Miss Thing Who shudders at the sight of the illustra-. tions of Ovids Metamorphoses when locked in the library vault with Mr. Chanticleer, is constantly on the lookout for harlots, but whose middleaged passion for Officer Graf makes her a ridiculous yet somewhat familiar character.

Francis Ford -Coppolas direction has combined a fine cast with a fast style to yield a cohesive piece of entertainment. There are some interesting shots of romps through New York City in Andy Laszlos dynamic color photography, and a good musical SCOref featuring the popular Lov- jgpnfni Youre a Big Boy Now has not been a boxoffice success due to lack of publicity. This is unfort-unate as it is a generally sly and sophisticated comedy of contemporary American sexual mores. Safety First With Ladders Make sure of ladder safety painting. Spread the step-ladder fully and lock it in position before Dont let anyone climb part way up to hand-you things two are a crowd on a ladder.

Dont stand any higher than where you can brace legs comfortably and never attempt to stand on the top rung or shelf. The play is a brilliantly written comedy concerning the United States occupation of Okinawa and the specific incidents that Captain Fisby encounters in Tobiki Village. There is one glaring fault in the play itself. A work that was written almost 2,000 yearsjigojs often referred to today as one of the best guides to.

playwrights. Horaces Epistle "Ars Poetica is generally considered almost as important to playwrights as Aristotles Poetics. In T. S. Dorschs translation of Horaces work it says I Would lay down that the experienced poet, as an imitative artist, should look to human life and character for his models, and from them derive a language that is true to life.

Unfortunately Patrick doesnt do this. Captain Fisby is supposedly a professor of the humanities but his language is indicative of the entire cast and we seem to be faced with a stereotyped language. It is difficult to criticize amateur actors who spend much time in preparing for their performances but I dont believe the Bergen County Players would want me to confine my feelings. Dick Andrews and Herb Hackbarth were the set designers, E. My reaction was not' the reaction of the audience that attended on Friday night. The applause for the entire cast and playwright Patrick were plentiful. After the performance playwright Patrick ascended the stage and made a few remarks.

He continually said that he wasnt an artist but rather a businessman. I believe Patrick is either selling himself short or he has plagiarized all his works. The latter is absurd and I think a definition of. the artist might be pertinent here. An artist is a creator and the playwright creates.
