I 16, 1950 THE SUNDAY NEWS Page 53 Italo Tajo and Sandlin To Perform at Musicale Of Haarlem Philharmonic Italo Tajo, basso of the Metropolitan Opera Company, Appleton and Field, duo-pianists, and Dorothy Sandlin, soprano, will be the artists at the fifth musicale of the 1949- 1950 series given by the Haarlem Philharmonic Society of the City of New York on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the WaldorfAstoria. Italo Tajo, handsome young Italian basso, made his sensational debut with the San Francisco Opera in 1948, when his fame as a great new "singer -actor" was already well established in the United States through his Mozart recordings and three opera -movies. At the basso's Metropolitan Opera debut as Figaro in January 1949, said Olin Downes of the New York Times: "Here was a Figaro, alive and swift, and a good singer, who for once gave some reality to this The young duo-piano team, Vera Appleton and Michael Field, met as scholarship students at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Their Town Hall debut won the approval of the music critics, epitomized in the phrase from the New York WorldTelegram: "Tow artists of the keyboard who play and think as one" Their Town Hall recitals in New York are an annual feature of the music setason.

Dorothy Sandlin, a native Texan, appeared as soprano soloist on the Sunday' Evening Hour sponsored by Ford. Miss Sandlin is now established as a leading prima Donna in the operetta companies of the country and has been starred from coast to coast in "The Merry "Bloomer "The Chocolate "Soldier" and many others. She will be remembered as the lovely singing star of the Ridgewood "Pop" Concert of last June for the Frank Kasschau Memorial Fund. Mt. Carmel PTA Cancels Supper Mrs.

Charles King, Mt. Carmel PTA president, announced cancellation of the Father's Night supa per board scheduled meeting for Monday Wednesday, night at Mrs. Gerald Patterson's home, 169 Linden Street, Ridgewood. Since the parish is in mourning for the Rt. Rev.

Robert H. Schutt of 135 Lake Avenue, Ridgewood, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jean Margaret, to William C. Johnson son of Mr. and Mrs. W.

C. Johnson of Tupper Lake, N. Y. Miss Schutt was graduated from Freeport (N. High School.

She will receive her degree from Potsdam State Teachers College, Potsdam, N. this June. A member of Clionian Sorority, she has been treasurer and president of the group. Mr. Johnson was graduated from Tupper Lake High School.

He attended trade school in Maine before serving three years in the army. After the war he attended Clarkson College of Technology and is in the contracting business. The couple will be married on July 1 in the Methodist Church at Fine View, Thousand Islands, N. where the family of the bride-elect has a summer home. Community Club Stages Second Battle of Sexes Spring was introduced in the form of a dance given recently by the Ridgewood Community Club.

The Sorsbys were welcomed as new members at the monthly meeting last Tuesday night. Another battle of the sexes was staged at this meeting in th form of a quiz. The 'subjects were history, geography, literature, and catch questions. The women excelled in the -fact catagories, but the men triumphed in the thought provokers. so still the controversial question has not been settled.

Union Home and School Changes Bridge Date A change of date for the annual bridge party of the Union Street Home and School Association has been announced by the co-chairmen, Mrs. Harold C. Kessinger and Mrs. Walter Ostman. The bridge, originally scheduled for May 2 at the school, has been postponed to May 16.

Parents will have a chance to see at first hand the equipment, materials, and reference books used in teaching the various school subjects as well as to ask questions concerning teaching methods.

Tables set up in the gymnasium will show work materials in the following categories: art, music, science, kindergarten, reading, arithmetic, health services, psychological services audio-visual aids, and custodians' equipment. Bernard Schutz is chairman of the planning committee for this program, assisted by Miss Elsie Rohrs of the PTA program committee; Mrs. Margaret J. Burt, principal of Central School; and Mrs. Marie Coyle.

Mrs. Lloyd Snyder Jr. is chairman of the decorating committee, assisted by Mrs. Eleanor Holt, and Mrs. Bessie Hubschmitt.

The school reading program will be explained by Mrs. Bessie Hubschmitt, chairman; assisted by Mrs. Helen Tucker and Miss Lois Klitz. Mrs. Janet Mann will answer questions concerning the psychological services provided by the school.

Mrs. Clare Van Riper is in charge of the arithmetic table. Dr. Robert Wayman of the Winston Company will demonstrate the kit "Making Arithmetic Meanful," purchased for the school by the PTA last year. Mrs.

Ann Mnroe and Mrs. Eleanor Roberts have charge of the Kindergarten table. Mrs. Genevieve Koster and Miss Helen Burns will show art materials and some pupils' art work. Miss Grace Waldron heads the music table, assisted by Mrs.

Coyle and Miss Dorothy Lee. Mrs. Eleanor Holt and Mrs. Ruthe Fahnestock will preside at the science table, and Mrs. Marguerite Seybolt will be in charge of demonstrating the mimeographing and speedograph equipment.

Audiovisual aids will be in charge of Mr. Scchutz and Mrs. Snyder. Health testing equipment, including the audio-meter, telebinocular and various health charts will be shown by Miss Beatrice Gibb and Dr. Eugent Audi.

The custodians, Joseph Millington, and Orville Ulin will display the equipment used for school upkeep. A brief business meeting including the report of the nominating committee will precede the teachers' program. All parents are invited.
