first place to get away from all the old stuff sick of it You gotta move forward get on with Or when he tackles the use of rock in TV commercials: was bad enough that Raisin Bran used Heard It Through the Grapevine Now last night I saw a commercial with the Don Johnson song Heartbeat I even heard the song yet like pre-programmed marketing getting way too Or when he reflects on the timing of Center-field his successful 1985 comeback LP that ended over 10 years of artistic exile: firmly believe Centerfield done it anytime except one month after Saturday Night Fever Disco was Fogerty who begins the second leg of his first tour since 1972 at the Knight Center Wednesday is once again rocking the big leagues rocking all over the world In a comeback-crazed time his is one based entirely on music not hype: Just as he did in the Fogerty is unafraid to snarl at the star-making machine or the defense establishment or anything that bugs him In every sense he is the crotchety veteran rocker He has come from exile on a farm in Oregon to storm the record bins and concert halls connecting his pained fervent righteous-sounding voice with the conventions of radio music He has endured a swamp full of lawsuits Please turn to FOGERTY 8D JOHN FOGERTY Ip WedrwiPay James Knight Center 400 SE Second Ave Miami 16 50 tickets available Irom BASS (633-2577 Dade 741-3000 Broward 967 2277 Palm Beach and Treasure Coast) tor cost plus service charge By TOM MOON Herald Music Writer here was an era in the late when Creedence Clearwater John Fogerty was the rebel rocker of choice His songs were evocations of a twisted almost underground America His interviews on the pages of then-controversial Rolling Stone and elsewhere were spiked with statements that lashed out against the The times they have a-changed Rolling Stone is now a fashion rag CCR is long gone But Fogerty who emerged last year as a rock and roll survivor is still the same outspoken guy You can hear it when he talks about the format sweeping radio stations nationwide: far as aiming at the boomers and of that generation why we in Actors only value in Movie Review The Color of Money (R) who challenged the legendary Minnesota Fats (played by Jackie Gleason) but lacked the heart to take his talent anywhere The Color of Money brings Fast Eddie back though a 25-year lag would seem enough to dispel the sequel stigma It is not alas enough to make Eddie a better man a liquor salesman now and in an opening montage we see Eddie and his sometime gal played by Helen Shaver busy sampling cheap whiskys that she can substitute for the at the bar she runs Eddie has made a nice living from peddling liquor on the fringes of the law But as is required for a Scorsese character hero or anti- he is still a man in need of some kind of redemption He has failed too often and even his successes are unsatisfying: he needs to grab at the ring And so while Eddie is flashing his green and showing off his fine clothes also handling the occasional young pool player staking Please turn to MONEY I2D By BILL COSFORD Herald Movie Critic The Color of Money revelations A small one: Paul Newman continues to grow as an actor which for a one-time one-note matinee idol is unusual indeed Newman failed to win his first Oscar for The Verdict This time it would seem he cannot be denied A big one: Tom Cruise who would qualify as a matinee idol if there still were such a thing is an actor after all This coming not so long after the slack-jawed role-playing of Risky Business and while the airhead posing of Top Gun is still fresh is big news Discovering an actor behind the smirk and the dumb eyes redeems all those nights at bad movies The Color of Money ranks as the casting coup of the year the most canny combination of talent and box-office draw since Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood costarred in City HeaL There are of course no guarantees: City Heat was a box-office flop But it will take some especially bad word of mouth for The Color of Money to fail And oddly enough that word may just go out Because the movie however well performed is a curious kind of failure It comes from Martin Scorsese who has failed before (New Yorh New York) but not quite this unhappily He go down punching but whining and with a final tnumph-of-the-chche freeze-frame at that as if confessing that he does not know what to do with these characters besides stop the show and hint at a sequel The Color of Money is itself nominally a sequel It takes up where The Hustler Robert gritty neo-realist-inspired morality play of 1961 left off Back then Newman was young Eddie Felson a pool shark Paul Newman: His growth as an actor in Color of is a revelation -J.
