confirmation a test of his own effectiveness as a leader proof of his undying loyalty to President Reagan and a measure of his credentials as an ideological conservative He has called the process the congressional "main event" of the fall Bob Dole is going to be severely tested to hold all his Republican senators for Bork and get some Democratic votes too" said Rich Bond political director for chief Republican rival Vice President George Bush be blamed per se if Bork fails But be noticed how hard he works and put a real crimp in his campaign Mari Maseng campaign communications director said the Bork fight gives the candidate a chance to show that he is a man "who gets things In this context getting things done means winning Dole is betting that Bork will prevail and Senate vote counters Antigua in the Lesser Antilles the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables reported It was heading northwest at five to 10 miles per hour and forecasters expected it to continue doing so today missing the islands at the northeast corner of the Caribbean Sea by about 200 miles The confirmation hearings and the final disposition of the Bork nomination represent a major event in the 1988 presidential campaign what's at stake for several candidates: Sen Joseph Biden DEMOCRAT Biden of Delaware the Judiciary Committee chairman has the most to gain or lose from the hearings He has already announced his opposition to nomination and sees the hearings as a chance to look intelligent controlled serious fair-minded and utterly committed to the principles of the Democratic Party He also hopes the television exposure and news coverage will help Democratic primary voters remember his name Joe Biden picks up that gavel he's got his future in his hand" said Democratic political consultant Robert Squier an opportunity any other candidate would die for" said Don Foley press secretary to Missouri Rep Richard A Gephardt one of rivals for the Democratic nomination has every opportunity to benefit if he can strike the right balance between running a fair hearing and being a principled opponent" said Democratic pollster Paul Maslin Biden said that he feels ready for the show to begin: "I think it potentially matters a great deal to the country whether Bork is confirmed or not I think it matters to me from a presidential standpoint as much as it matters how well I comport myself and conduct him to introduce him to the panel and that he agreed because of his respect for Bork as a legal scholar Bork will be questioned at length about accusations that his views of constitutional law would impede individual rights of privacy and free speech and the Simon Gore OTHER CANDIDATES Sen Paul Simon DEMOCRAT Sen Albert Gore Jr DEMOCRAT Less involved are two other Democratic presidential hopefuls Simon of Illinois a Judiciary Committee member and Gore of Tennessee the only Democratic candidate who has taken care to reserve judgment on Bork Some politicians speculate that Gore who is trying to establish himself as the moderate Southerner in a Democratic field of liberal Northerners might be tempted to vote to confirm Bork as a way to distinguish himself from the pack Others argue that such a vote would be suicidal for Gore particularly in Iowa and New Hampshire where the first caucuses and primary will be held in February And polls throughout the country indicate that activist Democrats the ones who go to caucuses and vote in primaries now view opposition to Bork as part of what it means to be a Democrat minish civil rights and In sharp contrast a report by the conservative Center for Judicial Studies concluded that fears that Bork is a threat to individual and minority rights are "largely unfounded" BORKrom I A University when the mentioned so far is Patricia Goldman a moderate Republican who is vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board Both Dole and the White House said she had received no pressure to resign from either Reagan or Vice President George Bush her principal rival for the GOP presidential nomination "I will miss you at the Cabinet Reagan wrote in a letter to Dole I understand your decision to leave and believe the reasons behind it will strike a chord with everyone who values the very human emotions that underlie public life at its Speculation had been growing about when Dole would join her campaign Until last weekend Secretary Dole had said repeatedly that she had no plans to resign her $99500-a-year post and had joked that resign whenever Bush did She also questioned why spouses were expected to leave when the candidates remain in their jobs somehow different for Dole told The New York Times in a story published Sunday the candidates can continue what doing Wives are one step
