f2 Monday August 31 1987 The Miami Herald 5A Arms negotiator calls verifying pact crucial Gunman kills 5 self in Boston Man 3-year-old hurt in rampage BOSTON (AP) A man opened fire with an automatic weapon in a Boston neighborhood Sunday killing four relatives and another woman and critically wounding two other relatives before taking his own life A Vietnamese interpreter called to the scene by police said the gunman was a Vietnamese refugee involved in a dispute with family members over money The 23-year-old man shot four people outside a home in the Dorchester section then ran into the dwelling He shot three people inside before committing suicide after a two-hour standoff with police said Deputy Police Superintendent Robert O'Toole The name of the gunman was being withheld But police spokeswoman Jane Sheehan said the gunman killed his 52-year-old uncle his 48-year-old aunt two female cousins ages 23 and 26 and a 24-year-old woman visiting the family During the standoff police gave Kampelman said "If it takes us two months to get adequate verification it will take us two months to get it want to make sure that if they say going to destroy it their missiles! they're going to destroy them) That would require some method of on-site inspection" he said In separate interviews on CBS Dole and Gore backed the arms pact but Dole R-Kan warned the administration that verification of Soviet compliance to an arms treaty would be a "sticking in gaining legislative approval of an agreement "As a fan of the administration I'd like to give them a little family Dole said are already rumblings in the Senate and it could come from both sides going to insist on verification of all kinds so that we can make absolutely certain that the Soviets are complying with any treaty dismissing fears that he might compromise on the issue to secure a superpower summit Senate Republican leader Robert Dole and Sen Albert Gore Jr D-Tenn appearing on Face the Nation embraced the prospects of a US-Soviet arms pact and called for bipartisan support All three made their remarks in response to reports this week that US and Soviet negotiators meeting in Geneva were close to reaching an agreement on limiting medium-range nuclear missiles in Europe Kampelman said on ABC's This Week With David Brinkley that he was optimistic that an arms agreement is imminent But he added that American negotiators would not be pressured into reaching an agreement with the Soviet Union to secure a meeting between President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev do not believe in negotiating under a deadline of the calendar" Associated Press A Boston police officer is poised with gun drawn outside site of attack Sunday conflicting reports about the victims and their relations to each other But Sheehan said another cousin of the gunman identified the victims Joe Munroe the driver of a tow truck parked on the street jumped out of the vehicle picked up a 3-year-old girl who was shot and ran through gunfire to hand the girl to his sister who earned her to rescuers around the corner When police arrived about 330 they found paramedics treating a man a woman and the 3-year-old A woman was found shot on a porch across the street from the house where the gunman holed up Inside police found a woman shot in a stairwell the uncle shot in a hallway and a third woman shot in a bedroom of the apartment in which the gunman apparently shot himself in the head A 9mm gun was found next to his body A 19-year-old man was in critical condition at Boston City Hospital The 3-year-old girl identified as Phuong Huynh of Medford Mass was in critical condition at New England Medical Center Both were identified by police as cousins of the gunman Di Wanna Salmons 14 who lives across the street from the three-story building used by the gunman said she was returning home and thought she heard firecrackers when she saw him wearing a trench coat with a rifle barrel protruding
