The film is contrivance enough to make Spielberg gag And yet and yet no denying the movie its elemental pull It's a big bundle of fluff you don't know whether to sit there and watch or charge the screen and tickle its itsy nose but power-fluff Not a scene seems fresh and not a line particularly true But by the end such carping seems like accusing a newborn of lacking savoirfaire Keaton plays a perfectly loathsome Y-character named JC Wiatt a member of the A-team at a large management-consulting firm JC who is to upward mobility what Sylvester Stallone is to Bozo-ness is the kind of woman exec who is fully capable particularly when given a chance not to dither (a la Annie Hail and her annoying descendants) Keaton is funny when tough and funny when soft the Baby Boom combination for all the calculations and shameless cooing (the dubbed for sake) is quite appealing enough to make you want to vote Republican I ane Keaton finds a bundle universal solvent able to cut through badness of all kinds After first spill JC attempts to tidy her up with household spray cleaner not to be believed of course not even marketing consultants are that removed from reality And yet and yet Keaton is awfully good and it is good to have her back doing this kind of thing a first-rate comedian UK il: A in Movie Review Baby Boom (PG) 'z CAST: Diane Keaton Sam Shepard Harold Ramis Sam Wanamaker James Running time 103 minutes Vulgar language Herald movie critics rate movies trom zero to tour stars Excellent Very Good Good Worth Seeing a Fair a Poor Zero Worthless of referring to herself in slogans as in worry the Tiger Lady is on the unmarried natch and shares a co-op with a fellow workaholic (played by Harold Ramis) with whom she has agreed to an uneasy truce where a relationship should be When JC a baby by the kind of movie contrivance that requires no mere suspension but outright meltdown of disbelief everything changes Exit Steve he lasts only through the first Movie Review Prince of Darkness (R) CAST: Donald Pleasence Jameson Parker Victor Wong Lisa Blount Dennis Dun Susan Blanchard CREDITS: Director John Carpenter Producer- Larry Franco Screenwriter Maertm Quatermass Cinematographer Gary Kibfce Music: John Carpenter Alan Howarth A Universal Pictures release Running time 103 minutes Vulgar language violence and gore crawl out your mouth pretty grim Fortunately it make much sense so it's never really scary at all The sole mystery is the apparent collapse of Carpenter's skills as a storyteller Prince of Darkness is shapeless Prince of Darkness a offer diverse evening Noon TlrTPAGlO fjmovoqonio op on Me 0 Soonscm SoonsoeO by Mom for feeding when little Elizabeth lays waste to some pasta Bolognese and the kitchen color scheme at the same time Exit upward mobility once the boys at the office sense that JC is taking motherhood more seriously than the Big Account they stop talking about making her a partner And before long exit New York altogether as JC and little bolt the jungle for Vermont where this being the movies they will meet Sam Shepard and discover that he is single and looking Baby Boom means to be a grand affirmation of the principal Babies Us only better and it certainly gets this done though there remains some question as to whether it needed doing in the first place The guys and gals on the corporate make are all distorted here not a Sam Shepard in the lot But then corporate climbers bond lawyers brokers and related greedheads are an easy target The Y-people are stupid too at least until they come to terms with baby Elizabeth (actual ly twins named Kristina and Michelle) who is a kind royal mess and almost utterly lacking rhythm as if it had been slashed and then badly reassembled like a Carpenter victim The performances aside from those of Donald Pleasence (a Carpenter stablemate) as a priest and Victor Wong as a physics professor drafted apparently for his ability to round up a number of grad students as devil-fodder are uniformly bad the music (by Carpenter with Alan Howarth) loudly telegraphs even the small est scare Even the special effects are surprisingly crude For the scenes in which Satan Jr makes the water drip up all you have to do is turn your head upside down and you can see just how they did it na Sackstein was at her virtuosic best playing with brilliant tone penetration and turns out that generations of sleeping priests have been guarding a canister containing the essence of the son of the devil himself for centuries Satan Jr is a vague-looking mass of green slime with the power to make water drip up instead of down which he does frequently and then to make it come back down and squirt into the mouths of unwary bystanders which in turn makes them zombies under his control Also he can organize the homeless by telepathy and make bugs UM players By JAMES ROOS Herald Music Critic Three world premieres and two distinguished revivals rewarded those who attended Festival Miami's fourth chamber concert at the University of Miami's Gusman Hall UM faculty composers Don Wilson Jon Van Der Slice and Dennis Kam unveiled new works Of the three Van Der Time Shadows was the most intriguing both in sound and conception The title according to the composer refers to of musical that behave "as visually observed shadows might during the course of a summer day: appearing disappearing overlapping contracting and eventually lengthening into that last phase corresponding to the quiet fade-out Additional performances would no doubt make Van Der of strings brass and winds much clearer for the initial effect was fragmentary as snippets of tone interchanged among the instruments However The Other Music Ensemble a group of 11 UM students was well-prepared by Kam and gave a good account of itself both in Van Der score and own Triple Play for strings brass and winds Here the players seated in threes and backed by piano and double bass contrasted darting rhythmic sequences with more sustained sections in the style of neo-classical Stravinsky While BEST BET MIAMI has been the subject of several critical books recently Come discuss them with Arva Moore nor was Wilson's Infra Red Cycles No 3 Though often a provocative composer in electronic media Wilson here merely took a festive little tune and dressed it in minimalist garb Repetitions of it were kept from turning interminable as the composer varied the volume and texture of the computerized sound which at one point imitated intruding trumpets Still the pieces were good contrast to the more works by Erik Satie and Heitor Villa-Lobos Susan Boardman and Paul Pos-nak soprano and piano did a delightful job with three sets of amusing Satie songs the Trois Melodies de 1916 Ludions and the eccentric music hall-inspired La Diva L'Empire Board-man projected the piquancy of Spleen particularly well and declaimed Le Chapclier with flaring tone and mock seriousness for its Mad Hatter illogic Altogether each seldom-heard song had tongue-in-cheek charm As to unjustly neglected Ciclo Brasileiro for piano a rich portrait in three movements of Minstrel Impressions a Dance of White Indians plus
