height At 5-3 he is the smallest player in college basketball His inspiring example of a basketball player overcoming a physical disadvantage has become an international wonder In Spain fans at last World Championships called Bogues chespa which translates to black spark" In the ACC he now can answer to the name most respected player Bogues is the winner of a most respected player poll conducted by The Observer of 20 fellow ACC basketball players representing all eight teams Each player contacted was asked to name the ACC player he most respected Bogues was named by five voters Tommy Amaker finished second with four votes and Georgia Tom Hammonds and North Joe Wolf each earned three votes Voters were instructed to select a most respected player with these criteria: How well he plays how much he contributes to his team how well he handles himself on the court his sportsmanship his ability to rise above odds and what kind of person he appeared to be on and off the court No one was allowed to vote for a player on his own team The panel included mostly juniors and seniors with a few younger players familiar with the ACC and opponents on other teams The ACC basketball season begins Friday and Saturday and in the last several months news of many ACC players has not been the kind that merits respect and admiration Drug scandals Arrests Suspensions Eights But the poll indicated several returning ACC playeis have earned great respect from their peers not only for their tab nt and ability but also for their determination sportsmanship and treatment of fellow players And no one gets more respect than Bogues Wake senior point guard Bogues shocked many college basketball experts by rising above his size to earn a regular position early in his career And last season despite the 8-21 finish and winless ACT record he was one of the most effective performers Bogues averaged 1 1 3 points and led the ACC in assists steals and minutes played Offensively he was involved in 46 of his team's scoring Defensively his ballhawking and harassing are feared by all Here's a sampling of what other ACC players See BOGUES Page 7C Men In A Glass Booth Spend Painful Day BALTIMORE After giving his football team a pregame talk Clemson football coach Danny Ford got on the wrong elevator and made a wrong turn He might never have found the press box in ancient Memorial Stadium Saturday except that he ran into Maryland football coach Bobby Ross who had just finished talking to his team Ford followed Ross to the press box and they walked in side-by-side three minutes 51 seconds before their teams began play Surrounded by a seven -coach entourage Ford walked to the visiting booth in the Memorial Stadium press box He ignored the CBS reporter who tried to interview him on the way Ford wore a brown sport coat brown pants white shirt and Clemson orange sweater Ross and his entourage went to the home booth about 20 yards from Ford Ross wore a Maryland sweatshirt and dark pants With him were four assistants At no time in an NCAA football game have the head coaches of both teams sat in the press box Ford and Ross would have preferred not to make history but the ACC had banned them from standing on the sidelines with their teams Ford was being punished for running onto the field and screaming at officials last season against Maryland Ross was being punished for grabbing an official earlier this season after a loss to North Carolina Neither liked the experience as both emphasized after the teams had played to a 17-17 tie "You will never catch me sitting in the press box said Ford they ask me again I think just stay Said Ross: "I like it A head coach belongs on the In a sense both were bare since neither was surrounded by his team They live in glass houses but they worked in glass booths and press box spectators could see everything they did Late in the first half Ross got mad at an call and yelled so loudly he could be heard through the glass in the adjoining room He wore one set of headphones when his team had the ball another when it did not He was tight wired and pained When something good happened to his team he would make a small 360-degree turn But he cut loose once When his team scored to go ahead 16-14 he thrust his left arm and left index finger in the air Ford sat then stood usually with his face an inch from the window The booth was closet-small eight coaches and two folding metal chairs Ford took notes on his press box credential a four-inch piece of thick orange paper On the table in front of Ford was a pack of Marlboro cigarettes and a Clemson lighter On the door was a sign: Late in the game though the conversations in the booth became public The coaches got loud and excited and you could hear them through
