10A THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Friday July 3 1987 Pen May Be Too Tough For Penn His Lawyer Is Telling The Court Edited By DOUG ROBARCHEK Sean Penn who has spent years apparently trying to convince the world how tough he is now is trying to convince a court that he is too delicate to serve two months in the Los Angeles county jail His lawyer wants Penn put in a municipal penal facility rather than among the more hardened criminals downtown Penn is scheduled to begin his sentence July 7 for reckless driving and punching an extra on his "Colors" film He'll be locked up when wife Madonna hits town on her concert tour in August 'Sex Summit' Vice President George Bush and Sen Bob Dole both leading Republican presidential candidates held a private "sex summit" this week The Washington Post reports Rumors that Bush has commited adultery have kicked around Washington for weeks and Bush campaign director Lee Atwater accused Dole consultant David Keene of circulating them Keene said on a television talk show that Atwater was "a liar" Now Atwater says the candidates will cool it The agreement apparently is that the Dole people didn't spread rumors and promise not to do it again and the Bush people haven't spread rumors about the Dole people spreading rumors and won't any more Katharine Graham Is 70 President Reagan and 600 top representatives of government the media industry and the arts
