Tuesday November 12 1 9S" The Miami Herald An off-Target spy story DAVIECOOPER CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE i'f v-f em 4 riii Florida Cowboys Association Finals Top Cowboys in Competition at the Fall Championship Rodec Seven Main Events: Saddle Bronc Steer Wrestling Calf Roping Bull Riding Bare Back Riding Barrel Racing Team Roping By BILL COSFORD Herald Movie Critic Target begins with the intimate frictions of a family drama A generation gap has opened be tween father and son (Dad a Milquetoast young Chris a college dropout) and there is an abrasive quality to even the most casual encounters between husband and wife And then before you know it Target is a spy story with car chases double agents code names and well-telegraphed surprises Dad turns out to have a sinister past and Mom winds up wired as a human booby trap It's no wonder that Matt Dillon former brat heartthrob and now just a young-adult actor trying to find some decent work wears a look of wonderment throughout his performance His Chris has just found out how weird things can get with parents This is not to make unrelieved sport of Target which is meant to be a drama There are moments But Target is not the movie it could have been especially given the premise After 15 minutes of establishing material by which we get to know the family action begins: Mom flies off to Paris on a package tour that Dad who is busy with the family lumber business back in Dallas cannot find time for Even as Dad and Chris head off to do some fishing get to know each other again that kind of thing Mom is being kidnapped Father and son depart for Paris tout de -suite the gunplay starts before they clear customs Soon Chris will find that his dad was once a spy for the CIA that the family name was changed when they resettled that nothing is how it has seemed for 19 years In a first-rate film this revelation would provide the subtext for a thriller for an action picture But Arthur Penn (who made Bonnie and Clyde and hence enjoys Pantheon status among American directors no mat- SHOWTIMES: Gene Hackman and Matt Dillon: Father and son on trail much of his energy on nuance not that kind of movie What it is is a routine thriller that leaves its best behind in the rush to another car chase And we don't need Arthur Penn for those ter what else he does) get the two lines of the story to fit So he abandons the subplot Chris warily eyes his newly formidable father a couple of times and yelps in disbelief once and it The rest is father and son on trail and whom-can-they-trust?
