Tarkovsky a Russian director who was allowed during his 20-year career in the Soviet Union to make a grand total of five films defected to the West in July of 1984 but not before doing some damage Best known for Solaris (a science-fiction drama that has not played in South Florida) Tarkovsky used Stalker his second science-fiction film as an allegorical fusillade against lethal and enigmatic power (for which read the state) In Stalker the fall of a meteorite or perhaps the arrival of extrater restrials has caused the strange irradiation of a patch of suburban land thus creating what the natives call the zone Access to the zone is forbidden and its en trances patrolled by armed guards but a steady commerce in would-be trespassers seeking the zone's legendary Room where it is said fondest wish will be granted Only those blessed with quasi-mystic powers stalkers can safely traverse the zone which is mined with mantraps Thus stalkers act as guides physi cal and spiritual The visitors are not an imposing lot Neither the stalker who is convinced the zone gives up its secrets only to those so wretched they have surrendered all hope nor his clients a scientist and cynical writer are the stuff of grand metaphysical clashes The zone itself however is something else To the eye it is merely a large meadow scarred by industrial detritus and pocked with abandoned wells and myste rious airshafts But as the Stalker wends his way he describes the zone's menace Here there are few rules and the safe paths change to minefields and vice versa capriciously One literally never knows quite where one stands At the end of the path lies a final betrayal If this is not allegory then there are no metaphors Tarkovsky creates a land where the truth is evanescent and the current wisdom impossible to divine as if like the party line it were operating according to some per verse uncertainty principle The film is physically arresting as well Though tedious in spots Stalker brilliantly and without apparent effort limns an alien landscape Even at its slowest this film has an almost hypnotic force Its short run here is a treat JOURNEY NattyGanrt PCrwwk Gunuct suggested
