4C The Miami Herald Monday April 8 1985 Festival salutes 300th 'Care Movie or commercial? By BILL COSFORD Herald Movie Critic Parents confront a dilemma with the release of The Care Bears Movie an animated feature based on the popular toys and one I presume to solve here On the one hand there is he Care Bears Movie the movie which is reason- among other works At 8 pm Diane Bish plays works of Bach and others on the five-manual 6600-pipe Ruffatti organ at the church Thursday The Coral Ridge Chorale sings Bach motets at 1 pm Friday Willocks conducts the minor Mass at 8 pm with Christine Crawford Jill Johnson Shirley Close Gregory Kunde and Dean Peterson as soloists Saturday McMurrin directs the St Matthew Passion with James McGuire Kunde Crawford Johnson Close and Peterson in a dramatized version at 8 pm Sunday A chamber orchestra concert Including concertos for four and three harpsichords (with Bish Jeanne Rizzo Conner Daniel Miller and Jack Jones as soloists) the Brandenburg Concerto No 3 and Cantata No 140 Wachet Auf! A pass for all seven daytime and evening concerts can be purchased for $25 Single tickets cost $5 Call 491-1103 or 584-0836 for further information All concerts will be at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church 5555 Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale By JAMES ROOS Herald Music Critic The 300th birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach is being widely celebrated this season perhaps most ambitiously in South Florida by Fort Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church which launches a five-day Bach festival Wednesday Performances of two major choral works the minor Mass and the St Matthew Passion will highlight the festival which also includes oran instrumental and chamber music The minor Mass will be led by Sir David Willocks of Royal College of Music Willocks one of the most respected choral conductors will conduct a specially assembled Bach Festival Choir and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Florida which will also perform in the St Matthew Passion under the baton of church choir director Roger McMurrin Here is the festival schedule: Wednesday Voices in Bronze an eight-member handbell ensemble performs at 1 pm followed at 3:30 pm by a boychoir and the Coral Ridge Chorale and chamber orchestra performing Cantata No 4 Christ Lag in Todesbanden Llovic Ilcvicw Jeff Daniels: Anonymous no more ably well animated squeaky clean and bland enough for the most impressionable child The collection of pastel-colored bears Tenderheart Bear Friend Bear Share Bear Secret Bear and the rest each of which has a heart-shaped nose and identifying insignia apparently tattooed -onto its tummy monitor the level of caring on earth and are stalwart in their resolve to keep that level high They caper about their heavenly lair a place of ice-cream cakes and rainbow roads called Care-a-Lot dispensing hugs and caring deeply for the stray human who may wander in with downcast eyes Their message delivered relentlessly during a short story about the efforts of an evil spirit to disrupt the caring is that while this world may not be a perfect place a little love still goes a long way There is certainly nothing wrong with this very young children and the less discriminating among their elders are likely to find The Care Bears Movie charming On the other hand there is The Care Bears Movie the commercial which is quite another thing Care Bears have been hot young-consumer items for a few years now and the movie is designed whether by calculation or accident to expose those consumers to the widest possible variety of Bears and accessories Parents who have been through more than one seasonal buying frenzy will note that the relationship here is not the same as that between say ET the movie and ET the rubber doll a question of which comes first and each parent will have to make up his or her mind just how much that matters Personally I find the movie harmless and the marketing aspect a little creepy But it may just be as the film makes clear that a Grumpy Bear in even the best of families business personalities but rather in the modest intelligent manner of a man whose confidence never blooms into egotism like to do the he said the good proud But it takes me a long time to figure that out I really sure about Terms until I saw it last month on cable It was OK It worked It If he become an actor Daniels would have taken over his lumberyard in Michigan the oldest son it was expected take over the he said after four summers of working in lumber I knew it for me They were disappointed but I just able to do Daniels gave up the security of the lumberyard for the insecurity of an life He was introduced to the stage in Ann Arbor where he began acting in commu nity theater decided that i like to do it for a living Eventually I moved to New York where I roomed with Bill Hurt and Chris Reeve We were all looking for After making his New York stage debut in Tennessee 'Summer and Smoke he joined the Circle Repertory Theatre where he performed in Brontosaurus The Short-Changed Review Minnesota Moon and Johnny Got His Gun He received an Obie for Johnny the stage adaptation of Dalton stunning anti-war novel But unlike many actors who eschew movies for the theater Daniels prefers the screen So far Daniels has been fortunate in his film career He worked for Milos Forman in Ragtime James Brooks in Terms and Woody Allen in Purple Rose By MICHAEL BLOWEN Boston Globe Service Jeff Daniels who plays the romantic lead in Woody The Purple Rose of Cairo is on the floor of his hotel suite playing a dice baseball game Mike Easier has' just struck out with his team trailing 7-1 in the sixth Daniels is excited nothing like he said while his wife Kathleen musement and his three-month-old son Ben sleeps in a crib nothing I like better than going to the ball Until now Daniels who previously played Flap Debra wandering husband in Terms of Endearment has had little trouble losing himself in the bleacher crowd in Shea Stadium watching the Mets But that may all change now because of his romantic dual portrayal of Tom Baxter adventurer-explorer and Gil Shepherd insecure actor in Purple Rose know if it will change that said the 30-year-old actor go in for disguises like pulling my collar up and wearing sunglasses You work for recognition I think people are nice to compliment me on the work just very So is Daniels not nice in the mushy sentimental way of many show Chefs Early preserved in the Florida Repertory current production of the musical revue that broke hearts and raised social consciousness in 1968 with tunes like Sons Of Old Folks and Carousel The show is a simple lineup of 27 songs presented without benefit of dialogue dance or story line The emphasis is therefore squarely on the lyrics some of them beautiful we only have love we will kiss with our eyes we will sleep without some achingly honest of the great or sons unknown all were children like our Such a format better suited to a cabaret may have been all right in the late when politics and poetry had a social momentum of their own But without the context of Vietnam and the peace movement Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris seems A Joyful Entertainment NY Times lUneful and Engaging NY Dally News Major Musical Hit! Variety Worth a Visit Associated Press A Musical TYeatl Rex Reed like a naive dramatic anachronism It help that Florida production is poorly costumed and inadequately lighted but at least director Keith Baker and choreographer Jerry Hammons have had the good sense to keep things simple Thus unencumbered the best of the poetry is allowed to rise like cream to the top bringing up with it the occasional best its mediocre interpreters have to offer Judith Claire does a lovely job for instance with La Chanson des Vieux Amants and Jackalyn Carpenter renders a delightful No Love Not Alone Jeffery Allan nicest moment is achieved in Danced Stephan Foster whose feminine mannerisms undermine his entire performance does one credible turn with Next about a desperate degradation at the hands
