Launch Title Defense Friday Evening It's all or nothing in the regional tourney at El Reno Friday night when Coach Chet Bryan's Norman Tigers open their bid for a return trip to the state finals. The Tigers will be spurred by their worst beating in several years when they go against Midwest City. The Bombers found Norman without a center the final game of the season at Midwest City Monday night and took an 82-59 victory. Centers Sidelined Bryan's defending state AA champs, 13-8 in the regular season, earlier had out-run the Bombers, 60-58. Midwest City brings a 14-6 total into the three-day tourney.

El Reno (16-5) and Putnarn City (7-13) open the milling tonight at 8. The Indians are odds-on favorites to win and meet Del City at 9 Friday night. Del City drew a first-round bye. The winner of that game will take on the Norman Midwest City victor for the title and subsequent journey to the state playoffs. Rick Kersey, the Tigers lanky sophomore center, was forced out of the Monday contest against Midwest by a stiff neck.

To make matters worse, Gene Bauman, 6-4 junior who has been Kersey's substitute, was sick. Jim Patterson, 6-3 senior who had been performing at forward, moved to the post and hit 21 points to pace the Tigers but he couldn't cope with 6-5 Bomber pivot Gary Talkington. Split Last Season While Patterson played a full three quarters and part of the fourth unrelieved, Talkington drove over and around him to bank in 28 points. Forward Ron Cooper netted 17. and guards Bobby Canon and Mike King chipped in 13 and 11.

The loss of Bauman and Kersey, the latter the team's best scorer, with a 15.1 average, and a leading rebounder, cannot be blamed entirely. Outside of Patterson's 21 points, only Paul Updegraff (with 10) scored more than 6 to aid the cause and the Bombers held a 40- 29 advantage under the boards. The two teams split their homeand-home series last season, giving Midwest City the distinction of being the only Oklahoma team to defeat the title-bound Tigers. Ada Plays Tonight In 1960. Norman made off with a 54-51 triumph over the Bombers in the regional at Shawnee before falling to the Wolves, 46-41.

Two Boomer teams open region. al action tonight. Ada, which tied Lawton for the league crown by downing Ardmore, 56-50, Tuesday night, takes on Hugo (4-14) at Holdenville. The Cougars wound up their season with a 19-2 total and the No. 1 rating in Class A.

Chickasha, also an A school, goes against Moore (7-13) at 8 in Chickasha. The Chicks finished in the loop cellar with a 1-9 mark but were 9-12 for the season. Friday night, Lawton (13-7) meets Altus at Lawton and if the Wolverines can duplicate last week's 65-57 victory they will meet the winner of Friday's Ardmore-Duncan game for the regional title. The Boomer could place four teams in the state finals. Ada should waltz through its and perhaps the state.

Home Courts May Help Lawton has twice beaten all three teams in its regional and the Wolverines have the advantage of their own court. The home court also should prove helpful to Chickasha, which has been a terror to all except teams i in its conference. None of the schools the Chicks may face possess an impressive record. Anadarko is 11-9, Northeast 10-9, Choctaw 8-8, Southeast 2-17 and Star-Spencer 11-10. Which leaves only Norman.

Kersey and Bauman should be back in the lineup Friday but the team probably will face the toughest battle of any Boomer representative this weekend. George, the out official at the time, said he had a prearranged signal with the timer and that when he looked at the timer he got an affirmatire response. "That was enough for me," he said.
