Louise reveals that Maxime was married before, to Hannah (Ludivine Sagnier), who was lovely and good-natured but never a stunner like Tania.

When Maxime meets Tania, who is married to Hannah's brother, he becomes instantly attracted, as we see during a scene set in the 1930s. Through Maxime, "Un Secret" makes a case for the right of the individual to remain the same flawed, headstrong person once his liberty is threatened as he was before. The threat of Hitler, after all, didn't immediately divorce people from their personality traits. Maxime, who thinks of himself as more French than Jewish, refuses to wear a star on his clothing, and seems to believe that somehow his physical strength will exclude him from persecution. And he seems drawn to Tania, who's as fit as he is, partly out of some subconscious need to try to bolster his case.

Bruel and de France show tremendous chemistry while also crafting their beautifulpeople characters into complicated individuals. Bruel, for instance, makes it clear that although Maxime is attracted to Tania, he also loves his wife, toward whom he is tender and affectionate. Hannah inspires great tenderness, because Sagnier makes her such an open book, with every emotion playing across her expressive face. We can see, for instance, that Maxime makes Hannah tremendously happy, and that even though it goes against Hannah's naturally friendly nature Tania makes her wary. Sagnier becomes the emotional center of "Un Secret" as Hannah, like Maxime, shows that the human heart remains its own force no matter how many armies invade Paris.
