FAIRHOPE Ala An autopsy revealed Sunday that a heart attack caused the death of Reed Sarratt a former Charlotte News editor and longtime head of the Southern Newspaper Association Baldwin County Coroner Huey Mack said Mr Sarratt 68 awoke from a nap after a walk with his wife Elva Ann and collapsed Saturday afternoon He was dead on arrival at Thomas Hospital after suffering a heart attack Mack said The coroner said Mr Sarratt collapsed at a motel in Point Clear where the association board was holding its midwinter meeting Mr Sarratt became executive director of the association in 1973 A native of Charlotte he graduated from UNC in 1937 After graduation he worked at The News as a reporter then became acting city editor during World War From 1946 to 1952 Mr Sarratt was an editorial writer for the Baltimore Evening Sun In 1952 he joined the Winston-Salem Journal and the (now defunct) Twin City Sentinel During his eight years with those papers he served as editorial page editor executive editor and assistant to the publisher Mr Sarratt was executive director of the Southern Education Reporting Service in Nashville from 1960 to 1965 He directed the journalism project of the Southern Regional Education Board in Atlanta from 1965 to 1968 and was inducted into the NC Journalism Hall of Fame in 1985 His published works include a book Ordeal of Desegregation: The First and articles in various periodicals He is survived by his wife a native of Charlotte three children Alexander Reed Sarratt III of Wilson ihn Sarratt of Greensboro and Ann Gardner of Richmond two sisters
