THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Monday July 7 1986 7B Mail Order Video Stores Cater To Film Enthusiasts Most stores stock copies of or to the But not many for example will stock the $299 account of the Holocaust By STEPHEN ADVOKAT Kntfltrt-RkKHf Nwmpwi If ever thought of a video store as a supermarket for the eyes probably noticed easier to find apples than kiwi fruit Most video stores stock copies of or "Back to the But not many for example will stock the $299 nine-hour account of the Holocaust because most video stores are small and because retailers are cautious With most video cassettes still about $80 each store owners must rent each movie more than 25 times to break even That means most retailers are reluctant to buy little-known though well-done videos that may languish on store shelves That has opened a marketing niche for mail order video stores that cater to film enthusiasts more interested in Remember This mail order sales video store offers such lesser known titles as and the Piano Tapes range from $1495 to $7995 plus $450 shipping and handling A catalogue costs $350 which is refundable on the first purchase Evergreen Video Society 213 35th St New York NY 10001 This club sells tapes new and used for as little as $12 each Membership costs $20 per year which is waived if you purchase more than $50 worth of tapes Members also receive a bimonthly newsletter a $10 bonus certificate a 10 rebate on all purchases and an annual list of the selections which include more than 1200 titles "We have been digging out the best quality said President Steve Feltes that forward in the next five years you do the next project you use what you learned from the last You take another step forward You hear about something someone else has done I think just a natural process Slowly moving His current venture has more than a nodding acquaintance with other imaginative fantasies Any similarities are deliberate think what we are trying to do with the film is kind of harken back to a lot of those classic fantasy adventures that a young girl goes into: Wizard of in and the works of Maurice Sendak We are just kind of bouncing off all that Henson said mind comparisons It is not like we are trying to outdo he said are simply related Wizard of and in are so much a part of us This is the fantasy world she (the heroine) has grown up with These are the stories that have fascinated George Lucas was executive producer of the film Henson directed and co-wrote The collaboration began several months after Henson and artist and concep-tional designer Brian Froud began working on the project Henson said it proved to be an ideal working relationship "(Lucas) is particularly strong in story and plot Hen GENERAL CINEMA EASTLAND MALL CENTRAL ot SHARON
