SO Santa Cruz Sentinel Sunday, October 1, 1978 Oklahoma Rambles Past Tigers, 45-23 Irish Topple Purdue Nelson Dazzles Tulane SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -Jerome Heavens bolted 26 yards for a third-period touchdown and Joe Unis kicked a 27-yard field goal Saturday as Notre Dame shook off the frustrations of two straight losses with a 10-6 victory over pre NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Billy Sims wriggled through Missouri defenders for four touchdowns and had another called back on a penalty and Uwe von Schamann set an NCAA record for consecutive extra points Saturday as Oklahoma opened its Big Eight football season with a surprisingly easy 45-23 victory over Missouri. Sims and quarterback Thomas Lott were the cogs that geared an impressive Sooner machine FROM PAGE 49 "I didn't see either Margerum said. "I ran guy." a post viously undefeated Purdue Badly outplayed in the iirst' that ground out 484 yards on the ground and the clubhouse.

Sims made several track meet-style runs, scoring the game's first tochdown just over two minutes after the opening whistle with a 42-yard sprint. The junior speedster also scored on a 50-yard run in the first quarter and one-yard plunges in the second and third periods. He also romped for 78 yards into the end zone in the third quarter but the play was nullified by a holding penalty. Sooner kicker von Schamann set the national record for consecutive point-after attempts with 93 and kicked a 54-yard field goal. Missouri got a safety when von Schamann fumbled while trying to punt from the end zone, Bradley went over from the one and Wilder added 12 points with a pair of one-yard plunges.

The Sooners also scored on a one-yard run by Jimmy Rogers and a 65-yard sprint by David Overstreet. half, in which the Boilermakers another 32 yards in the air during the game, cashed in on field goals of 28 virtually putting the game out of reach at 28-7 at the half. Although Missouri was completely out-manned. Tiger quarterback Phil Bradley and backs James Wilder and Earl Gant never seemed intimidated. Bradley's squad kept the ball for nearly nine minutes on a final drive in the first half, getting 82 yards in 29 plays and leaving Oklahoma only 1:11 on the clock to gain back momentum before the players went into it Flying Bears In 28-21 Victory FROM PACE 49 Bears' defensive back Anthony Washington intercepted a pass by West Virginia quarterback Dutch Hoffman and returned it for a 44-yard touchdown with 4:56 left in the third quarter, giving the Bears a 28-13 lead.

California had trailed 13-7 until Campbell threw a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Buggs with just 10 seconds left in the first half, lifting the Bears into a 14-3 halftime lead. But the Bears then had to hold off a West Virginia rally before securing its third victory in four games. West Virginia, losing for the third time in a row, now is 1-3. Reserve quarterback Oliver Luck, directing an all-freshman backfield, led the Mountaineers on a 57-yard, nine-play scoring drive capped by a five-yard scoring run by Eldridge Dixon with 8:59 left in the game. Luck than dove into the end zone on a quarterback keeper for a two-point conversion, trimming California's lead to 28-21.

But even though the Mountaineers penetrated twice more within the California 30-yard line in the closing minutes of the game, the Mountaineers couldn't score again. One drive ended when a fourth down Luck pass was batted down, and the other ended at the Bears' 27-yard line when defensive back, Ron Hill intercepted a Luck pass with only two seconds left in the game. Malio's Tourney and 47 yards by Scott Sovereen for a 6-0 lead, the Irish finally broke on top on Heavens' touchdown that capped a 46-yard drive. The next time Purdue had the ball, the Boilermakers attempted a double handoff and a pass by Mark Herrmann was intercepted by Randy who returned it 34 yards to the Purdue 13 before Unis booted the first field goal of his career. The loss was the first for Purdue after victories over Michigan State and Ohio University.

Notre Dame gained its first triumph after losing to Missouri and Michigan. Although the Boilermakers dominated play in the first half, they were unable to get their offense together in the second half as Notre Dame's defense stiffened and Joe Restic repeatedly kept Purdue in a hole with his booming punts. Restic punted out on the Purdue nine-yard line early in the second half and twice put the Boilermakers in poor field position in the final quarter with boots of 51 and 41 yards. Longhorns Nab 24-7 Triumph LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -Sixth-ranked Texas pinned Texas Tech with its defensive muscle then unleashed Leroy King pattern for the corner, leaving myself plenty of room. I guess I stepped in front of them, tipped the ball and make the catch.

At the time I didn't think it was that great." Generally, Stanford's Bill Walsh had no complaints, even though his heavily-favored team was outplayed for almost three quarters. "It was a victory, that's all I know," he said. Stanford's active linebacker corps headed by Gordy Ceresino saved the day for the Cards in the first quarter, or the score might have been even more lopsided. Ceresino personally took credit for stopping two Tulane drives with goal-line tackles in the first period. "Gordy is our main motivator," admitted outside linebacker Tom Hall, who turned in his best ever performance as a Card with nine unassisted and six assisted tackles.

"He gets Milt (McColl), Steve (Budinger) and myself going. He's simply super and our play on the field shows definite improvement." Tailback Marv Christian scored both Tulane touchdowns, running 2 yards for the first and getting the second by going 55 yards on a screen pass from quarterback Roch Hon-tas Christian, who ran for 142 yards in last year's loss, had 116 yards rushing. On the 55-yard play, no less than six Stanford tacklers missed the opportunity to bring the junior tailback to the ground. Stanford was ahead briefly on a Ken Naber 41-yard field goal, and the Cards didn't regain the edge until there was 7:35 left in the game. Walsh will have little trouble getting Stanford 'up' for Saturday's Pac-10 opener against UCLA in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

And, after last year's Cardinal upset, the Bruins won't need any encouragement either. Wide receiver Ken Margerum goes high in the air to bring down a Steve Dili thrown aerial during third quarter action of Saturday's Stanford-Tulane battle in Palo Alto. Margerum caught a 22-yard pass in the fourth quarter to put the Cardinals ahead for good and that resulted in a 17-14 victory. (Photo by The Sentinel's Bill Lovejoy) Arkansas Rallies For 21-13 Win FAYETTEVJLLE, Ark. (AP) Arkansas running back Ben Cowins topped 100 yards rushing for the 13th time in his career and scored two third-quarter touchdowns as the second-ranked Razorbacks rallied for a 21-13 victory over Tulsa in a battle of unbeatens Saturday.

Tulsa, now 4-1, played the Razorbacks off their feet before a stadium-record crowd of 45,428 in the first two periods with a mistake-free offense and a defense led by end Don Blackman. Blackman set up a Tulsa touchdown with a pass interception and stopped an Arkansas drive with another interception as the Golden Hurricane gained a 7-0 halftime lead. Arkansas tied it midway through the third period on a 24-yard scoring run by Cowins. That ended a 68-yard drive that began when cornerback Brad Shoup knocked down Tulsa running back Sherman Johnson for a one-yard loss on a fourth-and-three situation at the Arkansas 31. Quarterback Ron Calcagni made an important first down with a six-yard run to the Tulsa 24.

On first down, Cowins popped clean over tackle and went right past the final defender. Arkansas' defense immediately forced a third-down punt into a 12 mph wind and the 31-yard kick gave Arkansas possession on the Tulsa 44. Cowins, who gained 118 yards on 21 carries, scored five plays later from the three. Huckleby Leads Michigan To 52-0 Rout Of Duke ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Tailback Harlan Huckleby scored two touchdowns on plunges and rushed for 84 yards Saturday as fourth-ranked Michigan clobbered Duke, 52-0, in an intersectional collegiate football game.

The sparkling performance by the 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior speedster from Detroit enabled Huckleby to pass fabled Tom Harmon for sixth place on Michigan's all-time rushing list. Huckleby dove over from the one in the second quarter and again early in the third. His yardage total put him at 2,141 yards. Harmon, who played in 1938-40, had 2,134 yards. The victory ran Michigan's record to 3-0 while Duke dipped to 2-1.

yBama 'Draws' 5 1 -28 Victory Over Vanderbilt and Johnny Ham Jones on touchdown sorties to deal the Red Raiders a 24-7 loss Saturday night in a Southwest Conference football game. The defending SWC champion Longhorns, boasting the No. 1 defense in the country, rattled Tech freshman quarterback Ron Reeves and made him pay for every mistake to the dismay of the standing room only crowd of 51,012. Texas linebacker Bruce Scholtz intercepted Reeves' third pass of the game on the Tech 39 to set the tone for the one-sided match. King followed Ham Jones' block to score on a 10-yard run to capitalize on the first Longhorn break.

Texas, now 3-0 for the year, struck in the second quarter to make it 14-0 when Steve McMichael forced Reeves to make a bad pitchout and then claimed the ball on the Red Raider 21. Eleven seconds later Ham Jones slashed 14 yards for the touchdown. Ham Jones, who had more than 100 yards rushing, bolted 16 yards for a third period touchdown after Reeves had fumbled and Rudy Izzard recovered on the Tech 34. Russell Erxleben also kicked a 37-yard field goal as Texas built a 17-0 lead by intermission. Texas now owns the SWC leadership with a 2-0 ledger and Tech is 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Is Set TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Halfback Tony Nathan, embarrassed by two miscues, sprinted 63 yards on a draw play, triggering seventh-ranked Alabama to a 51-28 football victory over Vanderbilt Saturday in a Southeastern Conference game. Vanderbilt led 21-16 with the help of Van Heflin's passing and Frank Mordica's running before Nathan surprised the Commodores on a third-down play late in the third period. That sparked Alabama and the Tide put away the tired Commodores with 27 points in the final quarter. Those came on a 41-yard scoring pass from Jeff Rutledge to Rick Neal, a three-yard Rutledge run after he and Nathan teamed on a 59-yard pitchout play, a 28-yard run by Billy Jackson and a 61-yard run by Lou Ikner.

Nathan fumbled on Alabama's first play of the game and ran into Tim Clark while dark was trying to catch the kickoff after Vanderbilt went ahead, putting Alabama in a hole on its seven. But Nathan compensated for his errors by running for 124 yards and by catching two passes for 35 yards. After Alabama's first touchdown, Vandy scored on Mordica's 71-yard run up the middle. The Commodores' other scores came on Heflin passes of 39 yards to Charles Edwards and 37 and 40 yards to Martin Cox, the last on the final play of the game. The victory gave Alabama a 3-1 record.

Fresno, dropping its record to 1-3, was hampered by four two of which Cal Poly converted into touchdowns.

Wyatt Henderson gave Fresno partisans some excitement when he caught a 47-yard pass from Billy Yancey in the third quarter. A pass attempt for a two-point play fell short. The 21-year-old Springsteen entered the event with a one-point lead over Steve Eklund of San Jose. Eklund finished second in the race after a late charge, coming from far back to lose by three bike-lengths. He had hoped to become the first non-factory rider in the 32-year history of the AMA to win a national championship, but Springsteen's Harley-Davidson factory machine was too much for the young privateer Saturday night. Springsteen took the lead from Terry Poovey of Garland, on the 12th lap of the half-mile track.

Poovey wound up in third place. In the final AMA series standings, Springsteen collected 2 points to Eklund's 291, earning $18,000 of the $40,000 payoff for point leaders.
