the jewelry has been recovered detectives said Judy Greene the victim of a September burglary in which one of the suspects was shot and killed by a Coral Gables officer said Sunday incident rekindled her anger makes me feel I have to live behind she said have given very serious consideration to moving You wonder whether people have to be Driving almost anywhere around the county this time of year is no picnic But for the ultimate test of nerves no trip matches the challenge offered in the vicinity of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Congestion there is the product of no overnight brainstorm Years of planning must have been necessary to create the degree of chaos routinely frustrating motorists The situation has been impossible for years or long enough that locals go far out of their way to avoid the trap By venturing anywhere near the airport citizens with high blood pressure are inviting a stroke Doubters who suspect I exaggerate are invited to take the test at their peril To appreciate the traffic stalemate infiltrating the airport mess itself is unnecessary Motorists have only to try reaching Hollywood from Fort Lauderdale on US 1 at practically any hour of the day or evening The patience of Job would be stretched to the breaking point in the bumper-to-bumper snarl I had occasion the other afternoon to run the gauntlet knowing full well of the trauma involved A friend was making his annual escape from Pittsburgh and naturally expected an amicable reception The ingrate in my soul suggested that he take a cab From past ordeals he knew that construction involved in expanding the terminals was interminable and that he was imposing on my unfailing good nature But I bring up the cab in our phone conversation After all what difference did a few hours of aggravation make in a lifetime? Besides once settled he was no trouble at all His tastes ran to lolling around beaches by day and prowling under neon by night habits I have abandoned on grounds of sheer boredom He also insisted happily on staying in an oceanfront motel rather than on my living-room couch My place in Davie was too far from the action for him With a view to the pitfalls ahead I gave myself two hours leeway in meeting his plane even though the trip required only 15 minutes astride a crow Besides I had to make a stop on US 1 in Fort Lauderdale en route As I was about to congratulate myself on reaching the terminal with 10 minutes to spare despite the pace a cop started shouting at me to move along No waiting was permitted under any conditions he said I would have to park in a garage After circling the construction debris cursing the nebulous officials responsible for such a travesty I found a garage space and then found my friend waiting I was a good 15 minutes late He had even been able to retrieve his baggage in the passenger stampede while I circled But he looked haggard with eyes aflame from aerial Martinis to ease the tension and hassle attendant to modern jet travel We lugged his grips to my car inched out of the terminal grounds and reached his Hollywood motel an hour later Fortunately he care to do anything but lie down By the time I got back home the ordeal had taken about four hours why even in the comparatively tranquil month of August I prefer to drive thousands of miles on vacation rather than fly out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Bill Braucher it a Herald columnist based in Broward County FIU president announces resignation time has come for the university to have a new hand at the helm and a new team to carry on the progress and mobilize the support needed for Gregory Wolfe the growth of FIU would have been much faster if we had a competent dynamic Carvajal characterized the slow pace of private fund-raising efforts as one of failures Though private donations doubled between 1984 and 1985 FIU raised a fairly modest $13 million last year And while sister school Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton ranks second in the state with seven funded faculty chairs in the eminent scholars program FIU only announced its first chair in December think the one negative thing is that the foundation was not able to raise the money one would expect a foundation to raise for the said Samuel Shapiro chairman of the math department and former chairman of the Faculty Senate people friendly with thought that overall done a good job but over the last year or so had slacked Seth Gordon executive director of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce said that because of rapid growth Wolfe may have had too many responsibilities to devote himself full-time to fund-raising is a university that has needed to grow because of intense community demands that it do a lot of things simultaneously at a time when the state was at its lowest ebb in terms of giving it the money to Gordon said WOLFE from ID enrollment adopted the toughest freshman admission standards of any public university in Florida and developed a 10-year $176 million state program to provide along with Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton a university for Southeast Florida But leadership particularly in recent months has come under fire both from critics who complained about the minority hiring record and others who lamented the slow progress of its private fund-raising efforts Last year Wolfe became embroiled with his own minority affairs panel over the appointment of a successor to FIU provost Steve Altman who left to become president of Texas University Wolfe had appointed the commission after Miami regent Raul Masvidal expressed concerns about the low number of blacks and His-panics in the FIU administration Commission members said they felt betrayed when Wolfe who had apparently promised to consult the group before making the appointment suddenly named Paul Gallagher acting vice president for academic affairs In August leaders of the Spanish American League Against Discrimination and the Miami chapter of the NAACP sent a scathing letter to Gov Bob Graham and Chancellor Reed accusing administration of excluding minorities when filling professional positions The letter said the groups had no confidence in Wolfe and that minority hiring had reached a of announcement ended weeks of speculation fueled largely by the affirmative action flap that Wolfe was planning to leave the $91100-a-year job In his address he defended the affirmative action record as the best in the state and denied that it had anything to do with his resignation a statement backed up by Reed and several regents going to be asked or it will be assumed that some of the pressures from a small group of our Hispanic community has contributed to my decision to Wolfe said anyone worked as hard and long and enthusiastically as I have on promoting affirmative action it would be impossible to resign over a few differences about pace percentages and Reed reached Monday in Tampa concurred think those rumors were just Reed said is choice Those rumors I think generated by the minority commission study had nothing to do with his announcement Reed praised the accomplishments of presidency and argued that seven years is a long time for anyone to be a college president Other observers however disagreed that Wolfe had merely decided it was time to move on very strong judgment is that the president is resigning because of the pressure relating to the affirmative action situation at said Bob Hogner president of the FIU chapter of the United Faculty of Florida have no personal doubt about Economics professor Manuel Carvajal president of Hispanic Faculty Association and one of strongest critics said the soon-to-be-released findings of the minority affairs commission were only one among many problems with administration my estimation it has not been one thing but an accumulation of he said not saying the university has not grown and not saying Dr administration had its good aspects But overall Wolfe transformed small school into full-fledged university But with growth there are always growing pains Despite its expansion the school has struggled to get statewide respect In recent months administration had been criticized by groups in Miami for not hiring enough minorities And since his right-hand man provost Steve Altman left for a job in Texas there was some internal dissension over leadership lot has happened in a relatively of International Service at American University in Washington Although Wolfe is known for his charm and gregarious manner fund-raising is not a strong point Gibson said of the criteria that will be given heavy consideration in choosing a successor will be an ability to raise private funds as well as Gibson said recently have we the regents come to that realization Presidents Kennedy and Johnson stay at the helm or yield to newer blood? of the things Greg had to consider was did he want to take FIU into the next 10 years or was it time for another person to do said regent Robin Gibson Some regents say it may be time to seek out a leader with different proficiencies Wolfe is an international affairs expert who served as dean of the SchooJ FIU from ID five languages the school has increased its freshman admission standards making them the toughest in the state worked very hard to raise academic standards in a very young Popovich said Dormitories have opened at Tamiami and Bay Vista campuses short period of Sessums said was aware that FIU has not really matured into the institution that either President Wolfe or the community thought it should be But I feel we are well on our The framework of a major university established and the Southeast Florida Plan in place Wolfe and the regents had come to a logical crossroads: Should Wolfe a former federal transit adviser under (' fm
